5 out of 5 eggsHey You…Get Onto My Cloud!

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 102 (RN10222D-100NAS) 4TB (2 x 2TB) Network Storage

Pros: Easy to install
Slick design
All-in-one unit
Extra cool features

Cons: None except it is an on-going learning experience and lots to learn on what the ReadyNAS has to offer.

Other Thoughts: I know the modified Rolling Stone reference is sort of a stretch. With all of the digital files we have on our computers, you need a way to keep them safe and accessible. The NETGEAR ReadyNAS 102 is a great tool that will help you do both.

The drives came preinstalled in the ReadyNAS. I wanted to see how they were installed, so I opened the access door and lifted up on the drive enclosure handle and the drive enclosure slide out. Lift up on the lock tab and the drive came right out…no tools needed! I did have a problem with the ReadyNAS when first getting it connected to my network. I use an Airport Extreme with an Ethernet switch. When I connected the ReadyNAS and followed the instructions in the very abbreviated installation guide, I could not get the ReadyNAS to be discovered when connected to the switch. However, when I instead plugged it in into one of the LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme, it was discovered immediately.

During the setup process, you can name your ReadyNAS and set up your ReadyCloud account which will allow you to access your files remotely. The setup process formatted the drives as RAID 1 (1 TB) where the drives will keep a copy of your data on both drives in case one fails. I chose to reformat the drives as RAID 0 where I get 2 TB of storage because I wanted the increased space to store a lot of movies and music and my files.

In the settings, you can enable live virus scanning to keep your data safe. There is also a status window that allows you to see how fast the fan is running and the temperature of the CPU. I thought that was pretty cool.

Here’s how easy it is to load a movie for streaming to your favorite device…from the system tab, click on your ReadyNAS icon to see the folders on your unit. I set up a folder called videos and dropped a movie (drag and drop) onto my browser window and within minutes it was ready. I enabled DLNA and then I went to my PlayStation 3 and found the ReadyNAS listed under video and I was ready to watch my movie! How cool is that! You can download the ReadyDLNA app to your mobile device and watch your movie there also. You follow the same basic steps to set up an iTunes server. You enable iTunes in the System settings, drop the music to want to share and it will appear in iTunes as a connected server.

These features are really neat on your home network, but having access to your files from wherever you are is one of the great features of the ReadyNAS. There are quite a few apps on the App Store (RS Cloud, RN Remote, RCloud) that will allow you to access your files.

As an Apple user, one of the great features built into OS X is Time Machine. There is a video that shows you how easy it is to use the ReadyNAS as your backup drive for Time Machine. You can also set up a photos folder to back up all of your precious digital photos.

There are many helpful, short videos I found on the NETGEAR website or through the hellp button on the web interface. They help to explain some of
