This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 102 (RN10223D-100NAS) 6TB (2 x 3TB) Network Storage
Pros: The unit itself is small and worked-well out of the box. I connected, downloaded the f/w update, and installed anti-virus in no-time. It's accessible to my network and, being pre-configured I didn't have to do much more than just turn it on. My plans are to use the NAS as home-entertainment media storage.
Although I was pleasantly surprised by the unexpected features (being able to load and run apps natively), in the end, the NAS is sitting there doing what I wanted it to do -- serve files, mirror files.
Cons: The CPU (arm) isn't powerful enough to do video transcoding. If you're going to use this unit to store your media files, don't waste time installing the plex app (which is cool that it's supported) as the limited CPU means that the native plex app isn't going to be much more that a cataloger for your collection.
I purchased the NAS with the intention of streaming to my Roku3 -- and that's how I learned, (being a complete noob to entertainment streaming), about the limitations of the arm processor and video transcoding.
Currently, I've appropriated an older AMD X2 box for the Plex server and have attached the NAS to this machine and all works wonderfully in Roku land.
Other issue I has is that Netgear's online support and documentation is either sparse, non-applicable to this model, or out-dated. You'll spend quite a bit of time muddling through things while fighting their horribly-designed website. I've abandoned several sub-projects in favor of just letting the unit sit there and quietly serve and mirror.
Other Thoughts: As in all things, caveat-utilitor -- had I known about the arm-cpu limitation, I probably would have invested in a more powerful unit. otoh, I wasn't expecting to be able to run Plex natively on the NAS, so that was just an unexpected bonus that didn't pan out. For what I originally intended to use the NAS for, it works great!
I took an egg off the review because of the dreadful online support from netgear.
