3 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the price.. might want to spend more if you can though

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: I like the user interface for device. It's simple to use for as complex as some of the tasks.

I had a little bit of a problem figuring out the security permissions. This is probably because of the previous device that I had which it was very easy to give the "world" permission to your files. This device, I'm not sure that's even possible. You have to have an account and then the access is granted by "share" as you want to configure it I don't have a need for this so moved on once I figured it out (just gave me permission to everything).

RAID has gotten easier over the years. This device does a good job of letting you just snap in a new drive and it handles the configuration for you.

Cons: There are several of these.

The one that is the most important is I've already sent email to netgear@newegg.com and got zero response. None.

My biggest complaint is that from what I can tell the ReadyNAS App doesn't run on a 64bit Mac (which is my primary device). At least that's what I kept seeing on the Internet. This is a definite downer for me as I'd really like to try out the ReadyDrop functionality. I did see something about using an application called TunTap to get the software to work on a 64bit Mac but it didn't seem to work for me. Regardless, I shouldn't have to install something like that (it's an unsupported utility) to use the application.

Next on my list would be the transfer rate. I'm transferring about 130GB of files and some of them are very small. I've been at this for well over a week. At times I've seen less than a 4KB/Sec transfer rate with the utility I'm using (FreeFileSync). And I have a stable work. It's wired from the laptop to the NAS device. Sometimes the files transfer fast (the bigger files) but if it's a smaller file it takes forever. This might be normal with a RAID 5 device.

Finally, I had a heck of a time getting the ReadyNAS app to work on my phone. I think it's because I didn't have the port open on my firewall so this could be my fault. The only thing I'd say about that is the documentation doesn't say anything about opening the port (but I could have missed it really). I'm going to test this a little more tomorrow when I'm at work.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's a decent device. I think it's a little pricey with all the problems I'm having with it but I never really saw a good review of any of these types of device until it got really expensive.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the money

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: After getting the device up and running it seems to work well

Cons: Setup for the diskless device is NON-trivial. The hard drives I put into it would cause an error message that kept the device from showing on the network. Only after googling for a few hours did I find a blog that showed me how to fix that issue and finally got the device working properly.

Other Thoughts: Netgear needs to work on the the setup UI and put in special instructions for users of the diskless system.
Also the UI for the BTsync needs to be tweaked

5 out of 5 eggsA++ great product

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Easy set up, intuitive UI, easy online access, rock stable

Cons: Pro features don't have explanations or set-up help

Other Thoughts: I received my ReadyNAS for free as a part of the Netgear Friends & Family test and review program.

This was my first dedicated NAS device. I have previously used an external hard drive attached directly to my Netgear router, and was always impressed by its performance. However, the ReadyNAS 104 has well exceeded all of my expectations, and continues to do so.

Set up of the device could not have been simpler. From the moment I attached the NAS to my network it's drive was visible in Finder on my MacBook and in Explorer on my PC. The automated setup also holds your hand through setting up the ReadyCloud access, which is phenomenal. I'm currently only using the NAS with a single WD Red 1TB drive, and I'm seeing read and write speeds of approximately 35MB/s. Not stellar, but stable. So far I haven't had any stability issues connecting to or moving files too and from the router. After setting up I transferred 800GB of music, movies, and pictures to the NAS in a single drag-and-drop. The transfer took about 7 hours total, and executed flawlessly. That means it maintained an average transfer speed of 31MB/s, sustained for 7 hours. That's incredible.

On the operating system side, the OS6 isn't perfect, but it's not terrible. It's reasonably snappy for a NAS, and everything is straight forward. All of the basic consumer features are right up front and very easy to set. There are also more pro-level features available, but unfortunately there is little to no guidance on how or why to use them. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not.

Overall I have been thrilled with the device, and would absolutely recommend it to anybody interested. Definitely a great value for the price, less than $1000 would get you this NAS loaded to the gills with more storage than most of us will use in a lifetime.

A++, I know what I'm getting my parents for Christmas.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible, Horrible device

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: All in one package (if everything worked).

Cons: Cr@ptastic performance. HORRIBLE as a media server, even with Plex installed. Won't maintain connection, wireless or ethernet when trying to stream video.

Other Thoughts: Stay away. Far away. Get something else.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsReally

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Not one yet.

Cons: Trying to copy some folders that are 51 gb in size. Windows says it is going to take 23 hours. Just got it. About to box this pile of dung up and send it back. Network keeps disconnecting and I am hard wired through my router.

4 out of 5 eggsFollowup review after a year.

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: -Speed
-Functions
-Connectors
-Support

Cons: -Price (but fair for market niche)

Other Thoughts: This is a follow up review for this item. After a year of ownership I am happy and want to share a positive experience.

The first thing I would say is that this is a good device if you manage your expectations. It is a dedicated device and not a multipurpose server. The specs are not conducive to a lot of memory and processor intensive applications. I personally am running only the Plex app in addition to it's normal functions. If you absolutely need this device to do more then spend the money on the i3 1gb model.

As for the speed concern, on a home switch gigabit network I get ~30mbs throughput with 7200rpms. I use a competitors nas as backup storage targets at work on managed Cisco switches and get roughly the same throughput.

I have had no problems with the USB ports and have used them to maintain a backup of my xraid array.

Finally, I wanted to share my experience with support. About 2 months in I started experiencing occasional hard locks on my unit. Through the year they became progressively worse. I troubleshot as time permitted and finally contacted tech support detailing everything that happened and all troubleshooting I had performed. They were friendly, fast, responsive to my issues. I was able to replace the unit with very little hassle. They even provided cross shipping! They also followed up after I shipped back the failing unit. I can't say enough about the support, especially in a day when most companies make theirs as horrible as possible. The new unit has been chugging along with no reboots for months now. I could not be happier.

In closing I will say that for the price this thing is great as a storage device. Keep in mind it is not an app server per se and while I have had no issues using the replacement as a Plex server I still think it is worth the money as a storage target.

Pros: Looks good on shelf, quiet

Cons: Cannot delete pending invites to cloud, set up 2 users 1 connects one doesnot,

Other Thoughts: Spent 2 hrs on phone with support no remedy, been emailing back & forth last e-mail stated its in engineering now. I had hi hopes after reading the advertising as far as easy setup, just wanted local backup and to have 3 cloud users

1 out of 5 eggsLots of features, but SOOO SLOW!!!

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Lots of features

Cons: Way to slow IO. If you want to transfer more than 10MB/second don't get this.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

Can you tell us how you are transferring files to the NAS? Is this over wireless or wired Ethernet connection? Also, what type/size/quantity of files are you transferring? We'd like to work with you to get the best performance from your NAS.

It will also be helpful for our engineers to know what the make/model of your main router is as well as the firmware version installed on the NAS.

Please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com at your earliest convenience!

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsHighly Recommend

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: I would highly recommend this product. I am not a tech person at all but needed additional storage for all of my pictures. This was easy to set up and has been very easy to use. I have been able to give others remote access to certain files which has been nice for file sharing. The ReadyCloud website is very intuitive and has allowed me easy access to my files when I am away from my home network.

The metal box is very heavy duty and feels like it is built to last. The drives were simple to install and sit in tight.

Cons: Not to be petty, but I wish that I could somehow turn off the blue LED lights that are located on the front of the NAS as I keep the box next to my home entertainment system.

5 out of 5 eggsNetgear NAS

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Initial setup very easy. I'm using 4 x 1 TB drives setup in Raid 5. Very stable and fast to wake up from sleep. The case is made well and the display is also very nice. I use it in my basement connected to my home network so obviously I do not hear the fans, although they are pretty quiet.

Cons: A little slow on reboot, but then I hardly ever reboot it! Doesn't quite have the app support of Synology Diskstation and the UI is not as nice as the Synology, but it is very functional and has all the expected options

Other Thoughts: Very nice and very stable - I really like the wakeup from sleep speed
