1 out of 5 eggsHorrible, Horrible device

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: All in one package (if everything worked).

Cons: Cr@ptastic performance. HORRIBLE as a media server, even with Plex installed. Won't maintain connection, wireless or ethernet when trying to stream video.

Other Thoughts: Stay away. Far away. Get something else.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Wrex,

1 out of 5 eggsReally

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Not one yet.

Cons: Trying to copy some folders that are 51 gb in size. Windows says it is going to take 23 hours. Just got it. About to box this pile of dung up and send it back. Network keeps disconnecting and I am hard wired through my router.

4 out of 5 eggsFollowup review after a year.

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: -Speed
-Functions
-Connectors
-Support

Cons: -Price (but fair for market niche)

Other Thoughts: This is a follow up review for this item. After a year of ownership I am happy and want to share a positive experience.

The first thing I would say is that this is a good device if you manage your expectations. It is a dedicated device and not a multipurpose server. The specs are not conducive to a lot of memory and processor intensive applications. I personally am running only the Plex app in addition to it's normal functions. If you absolutely need this device to do more then spend the money on the i3 1gb model.

As for the speed concern, on a home switch gigabit network I get ~30mbs throughput with 7200rpms. I use a competitors nas as backup storage targets at work on managed Cisco switches and get roughly the same throughput.

I have had no problems with the USB ports and have used them to maintain a backup of my xraid array.

Finally, I wanted to share my experience with support. About 2 months in I started experiencing occasional hard locks on my unit. Through the year they became progressively worse. I troubleshot as time permitted and finally contacted tech support detailing everything that happened and all troubleshooting I had performed. They were friendly, fast, responsive to my issues. I was able to replace the unit with very little hassle. They even provided cross shipping! They also followed up after I shipped back the failing unit. I can't say enough about the support, especially in a day when most companies make theirs as horrible as possible. The new unit has been chugging along with no reboots for months now. I could not be happier.

In closing I will say that for the price this thing is great as a storage device. Keep in mind it is not an app server per se and while I have had no issues using the replacement as a Plex server I still think it is worth the money as a storage target.

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Looks good on shelf, quiet

Cons: Cannot delete pending invites to cloud, set up 2 users 1 connects one doesnot,

Other Thoughts: Spent 2 hrs on phone with support no remedy, been emailing back & forth last e-mail stated its in engineering now. I had hi hopes after reading the advertising as far as easy setup, just wanted local backup and to have 3 cloud users

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsLots of features, but SOOO SLOW!!!

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Lots of features

Cons: Way to slow IO. If you want to transfer more than 10MB/second don't get this.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

Can you tell us how you are transferring files to the NAS? Is this over wireless or wired Ethernet connection? Also, what type/size/quantity of files are you transferring? We'd like to work with you to get the best performance from your NAS.

It will also be helpful for our engineers to know what the make/model of your main router is as well as the firmware version installed on the NAS.

Please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com at your earliest convenience!

5 out of 5 eggsHighly Recommend

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: I would highly recommend this product. I am not a tech person at all but needed additional storage for all of my pictures. This was easy to set up and has been very easy to use. I have been able to give others remote access to certain files which has been nice for file sharing. The ReadyCloud website is very intuitive and has allowed me easy access to my files when I am away from my home network.

The metal box is very heavy duty and feels like it is built to last. The drives were simple to install and sit in tight.

Cons: Not to be petty, but I wish that I could somehow turn off the blue LED lights that are located on the front of the NAS as I keep the box next to my home entertainment system.

5 out of 5 eggsNetgear NAS

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Initial setup very easy. I'm using 4 x 1 TB drives setup in Raid 5. Very stable and fast to wake up from sleep. The case is made well and the display is also very nice. I use it in my basement connected to my home network so obviously I do not hear the fans, although they are pretty quiet.

Cons: A little slow on reboot, but then I hardly ever reboot it! Doesn't quite have the app support of Synology Diskstation and the UI is not as nice as the Synology, but it is very functional and has all the expected options

Other Thoughts: Very nice and very stable - I really like the wakeup from sleep speed

3 out of 5 eggsMeh, good NAS... but don't expect much past that

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: For the price (I paid ~$300) it is a good NAS solution. Plug everything in and it works. Good construction, easy to set up raid (with X-RAID).

Cons: Everything else :-( Every app on this this is faulty.
CPU sucks, please spend the extra $$ to buy the 3XX series so you can get a decent CPU (if you still decide to buy a ReadyNAS)
ReadyDLNA sucks, half the time it doesn't index your files well and you have to do it manually.
Turns out there are USB issues on the latest version. It won't recognize the USB drive that I attached to it, so had to mount it via the commandline.
All the Ready products don't work well (ReadyCloud, ReadyDrop, etc...)

Other Thoughts: My goal with this was to set up a private cloud solution. I am almost there, but it hasn't been easy. I don't recommend any of the cloud solutions from their app store.

Good luck if you want to do anything else other than set up a network drive with this bad bay. NetGear does not make it easy.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We're glad you think the RN10400 is a good NAS solution and that it's generally working well for you.

We would like to look into the issues that you're having with the apps and "Ready" products. Please email us at newegg@netgear.com with as many details as you can about the problems you're seeing, and we'll be happy to help.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

1 out of 5 eggsNice idea, bad firmware (for now)

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Physically a nice unit. web interface is easy to use if a bit clumsy. Speed were acceptable (note not great).

I have two of these units. One at home for windows file backup and video streaming (I use a Boxee box) and one at work for just windows file backup.

Cons: For about six months after I bought the unit things went fine. Backups worked and videos were streamed. At home I updated the firmware when prompted and life was good. Then the home unit started locking up randomly. As in you can ping it, but can't access it via the web interface or via the file share. The log files from my backup indicated that it was choking on large video file that was being copied. So I tried copying manually and it would kill the whole NAS unit! Many other experiments later I was able to easily reproduce the problem with just file transfers.

I backed up all my data to another drive so I could play with the unit. I finally reverted the drive back to the firmware I was using at work (v6.1.2). (Old firmware available on Netgear website)

Issues seemed to settle down...for a while. Then the unit at work just recently started to have random lockups. Same symptoms. Sigh. Really? It's a file store. How tough can this be!

Both units are running v6.1.2 and while I'm not happy about feeling like I can't upgrade to new versions of the firmware. I guess I could live with that were it a fix....for now.

Netgear has a stream of firmware upgrades, but people on the forums keep having the same problems that I've experienced even on the newest firmware (that you have to rebuild your array to leverage any of the nice features of BTW).

http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=74549

If it can't be a stable file store is almost worthless as anything else.

Had I one thing to tell Netgear (and I know they read these reviews) it would be: I could give a hoot about new features, FIX THE STABILITY ISSUES!

Other Thoughts: If it worked as promised it would be a nice unit. Not super fast speed, but fast enough to be a file store and run one or two small apps. Don't ask it to "do" more than a tiny CPU can do and you'll be fine.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Kizan,

We're very sorry for the problems that you've had so far, and we'd like to help.

We are always working to improve ReadyNAS and this is why you will see several firmware updates over time; updates are intended to improve usability and add functionality

The latest software update (6.1.6 ) did address a very specific and rarely encountered usability issue which meets the description of what you've seen.

We'd like to work with you directly to analyze what is happening in your specific case. Please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com.

NETGEAR Team
