This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 312 (RN31212D-100NAS) 2TB(1x2TB) Network Storage

Pros: This is one feature packed little box! Setup is straight forward as the literature that comes with the device walks you through step by step. The browser interface is simple and easy to navigate. Many useful apps to choose from. Netgear Support is a great plus... I had a question concerning ReadyCloud and my e-mail was answered in prompt order... a phone call later it was answered. There are so many good things to be said about this NAS so I chose some of the ones that seemed to stand out from the rest.

Cons: ReadyDLNA was disappointing for me, although the service says it is on it does not seem to be seen by any of the DLNA ready equipment I have on my network. In time I may figure this out, but as I prefer Plex I installed that anyway... no real need for DLNA at that point.

Learning how to set up LUN's, users and groups, can be a bit daunting for the average joe... but if you dig into the literature it can be learned.

These two quirks alone are certainly no warrant to deduct an egg, from an otherwise perfect score.

Other Thoughts: For most home users this NAS will work just fine as is out of the box, with the exception of turning on or off the specific services you need, or installing the specific apps you may want to use, of which there are a considerable number to choose from. The large choice of apps really adds to the great functionality of the NAS and truely sets it appart from others.

I loaded this thing right up as soon as I had it connected, some of my movies, and all my music... a little over 600GB worth. Of course your network speed will dictate transfer speeds here, if you have gigabit connections all the way through, you will have the best you can get.

Music streaming with i-Tunes server is great, having all my music accessible to all my computers and my Entertainment Center Receiver, without having the music loading up disk space on all the computers.

Plex is a great app, I was glad to see that Netgear had it as an available install (++). Plex fits in nicely with XBMC, and Windows Media Center alike.

ReadyCloud works! Once I installed the app on my android tablet I was able to connect with no issues and the Ready-Drop gives you access to any files you want, much like Drop-Box or other on-line storage plans that limit you in some way... but this is all yours, no limits...nice! It is, by the way, linkable to your Drop-Box account if you like.

I touched briefly on all the features (save Time Machine) and the only one that seemed to give any issue at all was ReadyDLNA, all others seemed to function as expected. Those running Linux will appreciate the power of rsync.

I did not test the usefulness of ReadyNAS remote from outside of my own LAN, so I cannot say yay or nay for it. For security reasons it may be just as well not to have that set up beyond your firewall anyway.

This device is most certainly on a level well above any of the other NAS devices I have ever worked with. It plays well with all of todays popular platforms, Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It is nice that there is the ability to use even larger drives, myself with the storage of all my Movies, Music and Operating System ISO's... 1TB fills up in no time and I find myself looking for more. If I were to throw in a couple 4TB drives... then I would have room enough for a while (maybe).

Over all NetGear has got this little box right, right out of the gate. I would most certainly recommend this NAS device over any of the others I have dealt with in the past. It truely is functional across the board with any of the Operating Systems in use on the market.

Thank You NewEgg and, Well done NetGear!
