1 out of 5 eggsWhere Quality is job 10..

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 314 (RN31442D-100NAS) 8TB (4 x 2TB) Network Storage

Pros: nice size; GUI is easy to use

Cons: Power supply died a couple of weeks after the warranty expired. Trying to move old HDs to the new device didn't work at all.

Other Thoughts: The high capacity HDs that they sell with these are garbage. I have probably replaced a half dozen of them for my clients over the last couple of years. The only good thing is that the HDs usually die before the 1 year warranty expired - usually.

4 out of 5 eggsVery happy with the NAS 314

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 314 (RN31442D-100NAS) 8TB (4 x 2TB) Network Storage

Pros: I purchased the 8TB NAS for my home network. I am very impressed with the design of this unit. It is built solidly and is the perfect choice for my needs.

The system arrived set up in a default setup that wasn't what I was looking for. While having a single volume with 8TB of storage is nice, I preferred more redundancy to have live RAID backups of all my files.

While the included documentaiton was lacking, it took little effort to locate the full owner's manual on-line to get things reconfigured for my needs in little time.

I can now access my NAS and files throughout my home network and can even gain access via the Internet. I also like that I can configure the system to shut itself down at prescribed times. Sadly, 100% uptime was the death of my previous bargain brand NAS.

Cons: The documentaiton included with the NAS314 is lacking. The only documentaiton included is a quick user's guide. The CD ROM included claimed to have the user's manual, but it is really just a digital version of the quick user's guide. For an item of this expense, I would think including a PDF of the full user's guide would be warranted.

Other Thoughts: While I understand the security concerns, it would be nice if the NAS 314 Management menu could be accessed WITHOUT the requirement to click and hold the "backup" button on the device. In my home network, the NAS is stored on a high shelf in a closet. Not entirely easy to access. An admin password should suffice.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS Heaven

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 314 (RN31442D-100NAS) 8TB (4 x 2TB) Network Storage

Pros: We have purchased several of these units and so far have loved them. The UI is friendly and easy to use with many many options. This can be a home unit but I recommend it more to small to medium sized businesses which will benefit a lot more from its options.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Nothing else to say except its a good NAS Device for automated backups or anything you want to throw at it. Space saving unit.
