5 out of 5 eggsEggcellent NAS

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 316 (RN31661D-100NAS) 6TB(6x1TB) Network Storage

Pros: Setup was very very easy. Since this NAS already had the drives installed, there was no need to format and designate volumes, etc. The default folders were already there and ready to use. You can manage and transfer files using the ReadyCloud website, ReadyRemote App, or your LAN web interface. I love that I can use either to not only manage my system but also can see and manage my files! That’s the nice features of using the cloud which my previous NAS could not do. Drag and dropping files using these interfaces was fast and seemless.
The read write speed of this is much faster than my older NAS drives.
I set up the ReadyNAS Remote App on my iPhone and it works fine. It was fast on my WiFi network and my 3G network. I could open all the files using the App and even upload my photos. The music streaming was fast and never broke up.
This product is part of NETGEAR’s business line. I am using this as part of my home network which consists of a wireless router, several switches, five computers, three NAS, three smart TVs, one iPad, one iPhone, one network home theater receiver, and one network printer. It is more than the average home user needs but the performance seems better than the slower home versions I have had.
I was able to stream music, photos, and video with no problem to my DLNA TVs, my computers, and my iPhone. My devices automatically detected the NAS and was ready to stream instantly
I had to travel to Canada on business and was able to test out the ReadyCloud and the ReadyRemote. It worked flawlessly. I had access to all of my files and the file speed was as if I were on my home network.
Other reviews I read said the software was buggy and not ready for prime time, but I did not have any problems. The main functions seem to be fixed and work fine. The hardware and software is much better than my older NAS drives.

Cons: The iPhone ReadyRemote App seems a little dated but seems to work fine. Adding users is not intuitive. When I added a user via an e-mail invite, they never received the message. I had to independently setup a ReadyCloud account for them before they received the invitation.

Other Thoughts: I received this product for free from NETGEAR for evaluation purposes. I do not work for or have any affiliation with NETGEAR. My brother-in-law works for NETGEAR and has asked me for my un-biased opinion, findings, and experience of the product.
I am an aerospace engineer and thus have technical knowledge of computing equipment. I don’t have much time to play with all the features like an IT person does so I do like the use ability of my equipment for its main functionality. This NAS fits that requirement very well.
Before acquiring this product, I was using a D-Link NAS (two drives) in RAID and second Iomega NAS (single drive) to back-up my D-Link NAS. I therefore have 3 drives with the same data just in case. I was planning to locate the second at a relative’s home to backup via the internet just in case of catastrophe but did not get to that yet. This method offers a free way for cloud storage but a hassle if they don’t live close. With ReadyNAS Vault, I would not need to do that.
I would recommend to anyone who has a home network (a router or access point) and not yet purchased a NAS to consider getting one to centralize their data (everyone save to or backup to the NAS). I did this years ago and never again need to worry about losing my data when a computer/device suddenly dies.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome product!

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 316 (RN31661D-100NAS) 6TB(6x1TB) Network Storage

Pros: This 6-bay ReadyNAS storage device has been a great addition to my home network. Between files for work, family photos and videos and my large media collection I was tired of keeping track of what files were on which USB drive.

A friend that works for NETGEAR offered to let me try a ReadyNAS device and having used it for a month I can honestly say this has become a "must have" for my home.

Set-up using ReadyCLOUD through my web browser could not have been easier. I was worried that it would be a long process and require me to collect a lot of information about my network, my router, etc. However, with a single-click ReadyCLOUD found the new device on my network and it was only a few clicks after that that everything was up and running.

Although my first exposure to ReadyCLOUD was for set-up, I have been impressed by how many other things I can do through the ReadyCLOUD portal. I have toyed with cloud services like Dropbox in the past, but I am always running out of space or not feeling great about paying higher monthly fees. With ReadyNAS, I can still access my data from anywhere (through the web, directly from my laptop, even from my iPhone) just like cloud storage, but I never run out of space or have to pay any kind of ongoing fee. And frankly, I feel much better knowing my stuff is securely and privately stored on disks that I own and that sit in my house. Also, when I say secure I mean two things. Everything is protected from the privacy dangers of a cloud storage service, but equally important to me is the security I feel knowing that my data is protected from loss or corruption. At the very least, getting all the important stuff from my laptop, tablet and phone backup up is great. Even better is knowing that should a disk fail, RAID will keep data safe.

Finally, ReadyNAS has an additional layer of protection that means I am able to recover not only lost files, but also any previous version of any file that I lose. I did a little research when I first heard about ReadyNAS and this ability to restore not just from the last backup, but from any version seems to be unique to the NETGEAR line. Finally, in addition to using the ReadyNAS to backup data we also use it as our home media server. Using both DLNA and Plex (which operates right on the box) my whole DVD collection is now in one place and I can watch from any of my TV's, tablets or iPhone. Even better, if different people want to watch different things, the ReadyNAS will send out multiple streams without any noticeable lag.

Cons: None
