The Western Digital Caviar SE delivers outstanding performance with a 7200RPM spindle speed and SATA 300 MB/s interface. SUch speed gives you a cold start in only about 9 seconds. 80GB gives you room to store all manner of possible programs and applications. The hard drive has an 8MB buffer, maximizing data transfer from buffer to host at 3.0 GB/s, and from buffer to disk at 748Mbits/s. The minimal non-recoverable error rate of 1 in 1014 and start/stop cycles make this disk remarkably reliable.

5 out of 5 eggs7 Years Strong

Pros: It's been 7+ years and this hard drive is still going strong. It's ridiculous. I bought other brands which lasted a year or two, WD is the way to go.

Cons: Probably not for sale anymore.

4 out of 5 eggsStill Running at 100% Performance

Pros: Got it for free because I took it out of a computer my friend wanted to smash. I've done test on it and it's still running at top performance and minimal faults.

Cons: It's a bit small for me but I just use it as extra storage.

Other Thoughts: It came really useful when I was installing a new OS on my computer because I had only 1 main HD, and I was barely able to fit everything i needed into the 80g of space. But i was thankful I got to it in time. I'm not sure how old this HD is though. I pulled it froma a OPTIPLEX GX260

1 out of 5 eggsThe Usual WD Cr@@P

Pros: worked for ALMOST 3 years,

Cons: Suddenly died...go figure as every WD drive i've ended up with getting dies JUST out of warranty. I've had all sorts of strange issues with WD products in the past and they didn't disappoint with this one either. Funny that I can run other manufacturers for several years, (I have some Maxor 200G IDE drives that have been to hell and back and still work no problem) but WD products seem to fail were others don't. From, sudden failure, onboard hd bios crashing, click of death...i've had them all, with every single WD i've owned. NO MORE MONEY FROM ME.

Other Thoughts: Never again...

4 out of 5 eggsstill going

Pros: still running in an email and surf pc for my mother we built her last year. no noise, seems pretty fast for a single drive, and has a good company name to back it.

Cons: cant really think of any, maybe its not 160gb?

Other Thoughts: Seems slower than most other drives, even my laptop, not sure if its that all my other computers are in some sort of raid of if thats the real speed of a single drive. (laptop, desktop, server are all raided one way or another)

3 out of 5 eggsgood, but not for RAID

Pros: quiet, cheap, mostly reliable.

Cons: NOT reliable in my nVidia hardware RAID setup. The disks will have occasional read errors that normally go unnoticed. My mirror had to do a complete resync every time that happened, and I ended up losing data one time because my RAID software is also not as easy to use as I had hoped. I never tried to find a work-around, so now I have six 80GB drives being used individually for several purposes.

Other Thoughts: To further explain my apparent discrepancy in reliability, there have only been tiny errors here and there on the drives over the nearly 4 years of use, which were all fixable. I'm just saying that it was too much of a headache in my nVidia hardware RAID setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWD wo0t

Pros: Reliable, responseive, and cool running

Cons: Customers that knock WD and claim to have so many fail but don't check their other hardware. Maintain decent cooling and quality power to your components and you'll be amazed!

Other Thoughts: I've used WD for years. Out of all of the 80s,160s,250s,320s & 500s we use, both ide & sata, and continue to use, I have no complaints at all. I see NC User mentioning repeated failure. There's no way a user can have so many lemons. Check your setup how about it? I've had only 1WD fail ever in 10 yrs, and I bought it used and it was 8 yrs old when it quit.

Good quality HDD, quiet. Great size for a RAID setup or a standalone SATA drive.
