Installation is a snap because you don't really "install" this drive; you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in. Good features + Good performance
- Pros: Fast & Quiet. Very compact compared to older WD external drives. USB or 1394/Firewire connectivity options.
The inner light ring gives at a glance space usage in 25% increments.
8MB cache for better performance over older/cheaper models.
- Cons: No way to turn off the light during operation. I have it plugged into my home server to run backups at night, I found the light to be a little bright to sleep with.
- Other Thoughts: There are dual inputs but that doesn't mean you can use it with two machines. Two machines on one drive will always result in eventual file system corruption. Play it safe and attach to one machine then share out the folders.
The drive spins down after 10 minutes which causes a slight lag while it spools up again. WD provides a utility to reset the timer.
Some people complain about the FAT32 formatting but this is for backwards compatibility. Reformatting or convert.exe /fs:ntfs easily fixes this.
Good Buy
- Pros: ~Great Storage Capacity (Advertised at 320 GB)

~Low Sound + Small Profile Size.
~Strong and constant FireWire Connection.
- Cons: ~Actual storage capacity is only 297 GB.
~Formatted in FAT32, but can easily be switched to NTFS.
~Transfering large files can take a little longer than most HD's.
~Inital driver setup had a little bump. (Easily Fixed)
~Case gets pretty warm after a few hours of useage.
- Other Thoughts: This is a great product to buy off of Newegg.com. So far this is the lowest price I've seen for it from any online retail store.
For the External HD itself, it comes in a very protected packaging (courtesy of Newegg) to prevent any shipping damage, and can be installed on a computer almost instaneously. Something to note is that if you use the FireWire connection, when you first plug it in your computer, you should skip the first "automatically search and find driver" screen that usually comes up with a newely installed piece of hardware. It WILL say an error occured in the installation, but I've never experienced any problems.
As mentioned, the actual storage capacity of this HD is 297 GB, not the advertisied 320GB, which is due to formatting problems as well as pre-installed software/drivers.
The inital format of the HD is in a FAT32 configuration, which a normal HD using WindowsXP is in the NTFS file format. A format change is possible, but it takes a little while.

WD MyBook
- Pros: Nice appearance. Takes little space on desk. Multiple sockets on back allows variety of ways to connect.
- Cons: Very erratic. Sometimes my PC would recognize it, sometimes not. When it does, it shows all the files, but whether they could be opened is likewise hit-or-miss. Frequent write-error messages. I am returning it. Would not trust this for any important data - or any data at all.
- Other Thoughts: The concept is very good. If this drive were reliable, it would be a super deal.
Good Product
- Pros: Awesome access speeds, very quiet, good cooling, great value.
- Cons: Not really anything yet, except for the fact that the very day I got it, Newegg decided to lower the price $35!!! That really ticked me off, I mean they should have at least waited a few weeks!
- Other Thoughts: Works well, and there really isn't much else to say.
Great drive, terrible backup software

Has issues being detected sometimes when booting up.
- Other Thoughts: I've had two of these drives for a little over a year now and they've been great. No noise, reliable and stable.
However, the backup software (EMC Retrospect Express HD) that came with them is horrible. It crashes Windows Explorer about once a day, and also takes the focus off of any window I happen to be working in constantly throughout the day. If I turn the software off none of that ever happens.
I've tried contacting their support and have been on their forums, but I've never received any help. If you're going to get this drive, make sure and use some other backup software because EMC's software is absolutely terrible.
This would have received a 5-star rating if it weren't for the software bundled with it.
