1 out of 5 eggsWaste of Money

Pros: None

Cons: Out of 6 drives 5 have failed within 2 months.

The only things worse than these drives is WD's customer support, it was so bad I didn't bother to RMA the last 3 that died, I would rather take the loss than deal with their incompetence again

Other Thoughts: WD's Customer Support outright lied, trying to get me to buy their more expensive drives.
Go with Seagate, much better quality

I would give -5 eggs if that were a selection.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad at all

Pros: Still working, bought this Jan 09. Ran it external via e-sata for a while too. Decent speeds for read write.

Cons: None I can think of for the price / specs

Other Thoughts: SSD weren't really commercial when I bought this, however I would couple this with a SSD for your OS partions to get the most out of your computer.

3 out of 5 eggsstay away from caviar blue

Pros: my 250gb WD still running 3yrs+ but it seems 500s are troubled.

Cons: got 2 of these "bare" 500 drive and 1 400 retail, all with 3yrs warranty vs 1yr now. all from egg about 2.5yrs ago was having same problems as most reviews below, failure to boot, need to repair system files, overheats in 1hr use and needs 5hrs cool down to be detected again, lost most data, send all back to WD and got 3 recertified 500 back. "WD knows these drives shelflife", used to be 5yrs when 1st purchased then WD changed it to 3yrs.

Other Thoughts: will not buy caviar blue again...3 stars for replacements but now they are just collecting dust uninstall - will eb** it...however will buy WD again in Caviar Black w/ 5rys wrnty and hopefully it won't be change to 3 later on.

1 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital Caviar Blue WD5000KSRTL

Pros: None

Cons: All

Other Thoughts: Bad HD. I bought this after reading reviews on newegg back in 2008. It failed August 2010. I lost all my work data with it. If you value your money do not buy this HD.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice

Pros: I've had this hard drive for almost 3 years now, and it has not failed. Very awesome. I have it in an external enclosure, and I leave it on pretty much 24/7 and it works great. Also, there was one moment where I thought this hard drive broke down, (it was actually the enclosure that broke down), so I applied for an RMA. The entire process was entirely automated, and took literally minutes. I didn't know getting an RMA was so easy. GREAT RMA system, just in case the hard drive does fail.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsno cable?

Pros: Very quiet, very fast drive. Easy install, used WD downloaded Acronis software to clone existing drive.

Cons: Was very disappointed that a SATA cable was not included with retail drive. That was the main reason I went for the retail version, as in the good old days of ATA drives, they always included a cable, mounting brackets and a floppy or CD with their utilities on it. Probably should disclose what exactly is in the box. (mine wasn't purchased at newegg)

Other Thoughts: Hope mine lasts longer than some of the more recent posters.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It didn't burn my house down.

Cons: Disk was defective upon purchase. Spend about 13 hours troubleshooting. Ended up going to Wall mart to buy a replacement - Seagate 500GB drive. Then had no problems with new machine whatsoever. AMAZING. Bad WD!

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible Warranty

Pros: I had this drive for about 1.5 years, and it worked great, until about a month ago.

Cons: Started giving me windows system errors about a month ago. I'd have to install the missing system files before my drive would boot properly. Then it just couldn't read my second partition at all. Plus the warranty sucks, only 1 year? I think 5 years should be standard on all hd's.

Other Thoughts: Would buy wd again just will back up stuff this time, and buy the extended warranty.
