Reliability in high duty cycle environments - Utilizing enterprise-class manufacturing processes, these drives are designed with enhanced reliability in a 24x7, high duty cycle environment.
Built to last - Made for years of high-performance operation around the clock. Reliability demonstration testing indicates a mean time between failure (MTBF) of one million hours.
RAID-specific time limited error recovery - Improves error handling coordination with RAID adapters and prevents drive fallout caused by extended drive error-recovery processes.
Fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor - Improves hard drive reliability; reduces heat, vibration, and noise.
Improved power controller - Consumes less power and generates low heat.
FlexPower - Connector technology that accepts power from either industry-standard or new SATA power supplies.
Hot plug support - Allows swapping of hard drives without having to power down the system or reboot; promotes system design flexibility, data availability, and serviceability.

2 out of 5 eggsExtremely Poor Performance

Pros: The drives worked...

Cons: Miserable speed.

I purchased two of these for a RAID 0 setup. After hooking them up, I installed my OS, drivers, and necessary applications for benchmarking.

These drives, while together in RAID 0, got an average read speed of ~100MB/s. Most other drives in its price range, perform at about 200MB/s in RAID 0. I even assumed my motherboard's RAID was bad and purchased another PCI-E x1 RAID card. After installing the new card and setting up my system again, the scores had actually lowered.

My next thought was that perhaps one of the drives was performing poorly and slowing down the RAID. So, I disabled the raid and reinstalled both as single drives. I tested the performance of each drive on their own to which they each scored pathetically low scores of about 52MB/s read. That's slower than my WD 320GB SATA1 drive. I'm now in the process of RMAing these to get something good.

If it gives you a better idea, my 1.5TB single Seagate performed better than these two drives in RAID

Other Thoughts: I'm giving two stars simply because they did work. Just very poorly.

I've been a fan of Western Digital for a long time, but this has completely warped my perspective.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

Pros: 16MB cache, and 160GB storage. Perfect for my computer. Had the drive since Sept 2007 still running at 99%. Performance per dollar is definately worth the buy. Bought my brother the model under. Western Digital nailed it with this one. Good mid range drive.

Cons: The cons are very few but nothing is perfect. Drivers were a little trouble. 16MB cache was being detected as 8MB. [A quick call to Western Digital and every thing was fixed]

Other Thoughts: I also use the seagate "equivalent" which is priced about $5 more. Only 8MB cache however, but speed seems to match that of the WD. If you want ultimate performance, go Western Digital Velociraptor.

3 out of 5 eggsMany Bad Sectors on 1 of 2 disks

Pros: Price was okay.

Cons: I bought two of these disks. One of the two had so many bad sectors that the Western Digital scan software could not repair it and terminated the scan. However, I was eventually able to repair the disk by writing zeroes to the entire drive (full erase) using another WD utility.

Other Thoughts: I still kept the disk since I was able to map out the bad sectors and it wasn't worth going through newegg's RMA process to exchange it.

5 out of 5 eggs18 Months with no issues

Pros: I'm running 2 of these in a RAID 0 on an Intel 975BX2 MB. Install went as it should. System boots quickly, even with Vista 64. No problems in 18 months of operation. Plenty of room on the drive for the OS and my apps. My data I keep on the RAID5.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is an OEM drive. Like all other OEM HDDs, CDRs, DVDs, etc., OEM means no manuals, no software, no cables, no mounting screws. If you buy OEM, live with it. If you want all the frills, buy retail.
