5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives

Pros: Low price, Hi reliability. Bought 3 in Mar 2007, first one fail this month Feb 2015. Used in a server that runs during the day and is off at night. That's about 32,000 run time hours.

Cons: It's a blue not a black.

5 out of 5 eggsPurchased 6/28/11 No errors, still smooth and quiet.

Pros: I purchased (two) Western Digital WD Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drives on 6/28/2011 and still today they're are both running quiet and operate perfectly with no errors. I'm here now looking hoping they are on sale during Christmas so I can buy another one. This particular model l# WD Blue 500 GB HD has proven itself to me

Cons: None...

Other Thoughts: I want a SSD for Christmas so I can use my WD Blue 500GB for storage only and save wear and tear on them.

4 out of 5 eggsStill Going Strong

Pros: Long Life, At the time of purchce was a good deal for the size

Cons: 16MB cache is now subpar

Other Thoughts: Bought this HDD in 2008 and it has still been going strong. I have needed to delete stuff and add storage space since then, but I hope my other HDDs run as good as this one.

4 out of 5 eggsWD5000AAKS End Of Life

Pros: Has not given a bit of trouble since 02/2011. In my case, I can't hear it, so it's been doing its job silently.
Price was reasonable and speed is OK.

Cons: By today's standards, it's big (3.5"). It's finally coming up in the SMART test with warnings of impending doom. Seems a bit of a short lifespan for a nicely treated drive. I have a high quality power supply (with 2 external layers of surge & EMI/RFI protection), a thermally stable and protected location for the machine and several fans and a regular cleaning regimen. Everything a hard drive could want. It's even running Linux EXT4 with lotsa RAM and I don't work it very hard as it's my boot drive.
All that being said, it looks like my external USB beater Hitachi (OK, HGST) drives will outlive it. Bummer.

Other Thoughts: For being a good cheap all-day-long quiet and stable drive, I'd normally give 5 eggs. However, I feel it has gone bad too young. So, 4 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsCould not have asked for more.

Pros: Performs exactly like you think it would. Not top of the line these days, but works just fine for general/gaming use.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive in July of 2008. It's been used almost every single day since then and it is still running today with no problems. The only problem I had was needing to replace the SATA cable, which was cheap and very easy. I'm amazed at how long this drive has lasted and continued to perform through 6+ years of use.
