Remember when 20 MB drives were "it"? Then 1 GB drives were the rage? Here we are at half a terabyte, folks, and for less than what 30 GB drives cost when they were new. How big is a tera-anything? That's a one followed by twelve zeros. The distance light travels in two months is about one tera-mile. Too abstract? Okay, if your DVD holds 8 GB, this drive will hold the equivalent of 62 DVDs with room left over for part of your CD collection.

There's only three things you can really get excited about in a hard drive: the size, the speed, and the cost. We covered size. The maximum transfer rate is 3Gb/sec using the SATA interface, so it's fast, with a 16MB buffer to help it keep up. It's value priced and comes with a manufacturer's limited warranty to further protect your investment.

Don't run out of storage in the middle of a project; get one now!

  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Bought this when it was on sale for a budget build gaming PC. SSD was out of the question, and since the price was right I picked it up. Works fine

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Wish it came with a SATA cable, but most drives dont so just remember to get one when you buy one.

Pros: Drive benchmarks (Atto) higher then the WD6401AALS Cavier Black drives. It's also quieter and runs cooler.

Cons: Whats not to like.

4 out of 5 eggsDirt Cheap Drive

Pros: Relatively quiet drives. I'm running 4 simultaneously in RAID10 and they become only slightly audible during data intensive loads in the dead of night.

Cons: Only a 6.0 index score on Windows 7 on a RAID10...

Performance is in between the green and black edition. Not the best choice for a RAID setup but the price per GB was unbeatable at the time.

Other Thoughts: Purchased 4 to build a 1TB RAID10 for my personal workstation using Intel RAID chipset.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid HDD

Pros: Fit with no problems, and works really well. Great price for half a TB worth of storage.

Cons: Plugging in the power cord was a bit of a fight, but nothing worth taking an egg off for.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Deal

Pros: Pretty much plugged in and got full SATAII 3G functionality with W7x64 new computer. I use it alongside a RAID0 to store install files during boot before RAID. Works great as second boot disk. Diskbenchmarked 2137MB/s Read.

Cons: 500Gb is getting small these days ;)

Other Thoughts: Can't wait until SATAII 6G disks are this cheap and reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsthis hard drive

Pros: good transfer speed, was on a great sale $54.99-$15.00, I haven't had any issues with it so far, i needed a solution so i could back up my files and format my 60gb SSD

Cons: doesn't make me breakfast in bed :-(

Other Thoughts: might get a NAS case for this when I build my next computer

5 out of 5 eggsgood price -solid drive

Pros: reasonable fast,sata3, very quite, pretty vast amount of storage space, WD reliability very good @ sale price value.

Cons: the only con i can think of --you might buy two fro raid or hold out for a 1TB-64cach WD drive.

Other Thoughts: pretty much what you would expect from WD. a smooth running HD. don't know if it will hold up as long as my other WD drives but i certainly have no reason to think it won't do as well. is should run for many years.

newegg shipped the drive quickly for a good price and you have newweggs best in the biz CS. +1 for the egg!
