5 out of 5 eggsAmazing lifespan

Pros: It is December 2013 and these hard drives still work. The size is a bit small by today's standards, but they would be great for a donor computer for some charity or non-profit organization.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: These hard drives have never failed on me. Yay, Western Digital!

1 out of 5 eggs2 DOA, 1 failure after 6 months

Pros: None.

Cons: I purchased 3 of these last year to upgrade some older Dells. 2 of them installed fine, although 1 of the computers runs slow with it installed. 3rd came DOA, WD sent a replacement but it too was DOA (both of them bad boot sectors). WD was too difficult to work with so so I just surrendered and purchased a new computer instead. Now today 1 of the 2 hard drives that has been working ok for the past 6 months has crashed and died; so I reinstalled the old hard drive and am back to where I started 6 months ago. 1 good drive (so far) out of 4. "Upgrading" to these wd1600aajs was a total waste of time and money.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: A learning experience I suppose, about being more thorough.

Cons: This HDD gave me more trouble than I can fit into 3,000 characters, but here's a summary. Was apparently bad from day one, but always managed to throw me off by taking a fresh OS install with no issues. I therefore, several times figured that it was other components (my suspicion was the GPU) causing issues which made the OS non-bootable. Until a few weeks ago when the system this HDD was in, again, decided to misbehave, this time though, a fresh OS install did nothing, because the HDD had packed up for the last time. Overall, this HDD caused me to waste at least 30 hours of my time. Truly diabolical.

Other Thoughts: Somebody at WD messed up, because they sent me the 320GB version of this drive after the whole warranty debacle had cleared, I'm glad though, I didn't really want the original back, I would have settled for a smaller one honestly. WD also offers special shipping rates for people claiming a warranty on one of their products.

4 out of 5 eggs10/9/2012

Pros: Cheap drive, low heat, quiet

Cons: Drive failed after 2 years of service. Drive was used every weekday and left on 24/7. Computer became slow to respond, and WD Diag showed bad sectors which were non-repairable. SMART data showed the drive was fine. Was able to warranty, but put an SSD in the PC and kept the new drive as backup.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going storng

Pros: Bought in 2009 for a friends upgrade. Still works like a champ.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: Bought as part of a build for a friend. He's finally getting around to a ground up rebuild. Used as a boot drive for 3 years plus and will be recycled into the NAS he's building.

It just works.

After watching me build a system for him he's a convert and will no longer be buying dell's, E-Machines etc.
He's become a build it yourself guy and is finally moving away from that overclocked E7500 we built in 2009.

The downside is he's building a Core i5 3570K system, and , quite frankly it's starting to make me jealous.....

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: Quiet, runs cool.

Cons: Poor quality.

Other Thoughts: This was in an office computer that got very little use and 1 month after warranty expired the unit has died.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Performance

Pros: Drive has been very dependable. Used for new build in 2008. Installed with no problem, and has had zero issues since it was put into service. I have moved this drive twice into new builds, and it remains solid.

Cons: 3.0 SATA is the bottleneck in current system, but at the time of purchase, not a problem.
