Western Digital's My Book Premium II is the latest evolution in their long history of back up devices. This 2TB drive has a triple interface for maximum connectivity. The USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 interfaces allow you to connect to virtually any modern Mac or PC. If you need even faster data transfer rates then you can attach the drive to your system through the FireWire 800 interface.

A capacity gauge on the front panel lets you know how much room you have left on the drive. The rest of the housing is designed to vent heat away from the drive to keep it cool and save your data. The thermostatically controlled fan adds a boost of cool air as needed.

The drive has an easy to use RAID wizard to make configuration easy. You can set it up for mirroring for the ultimate in data protection, or you can set up striping for the fastest performance. Either way your data is safe and secure.

  • newegg Huge 2TB Storage Capacity The Western Digital My Book Premium II (Model WDG2T20000N) combines two 1TB hard drives to provide an amazing storage capacity of 2TB for high-performance data storage and backup.
  • newegg Built-in RAID The Western Digital My Book Premium II (Model WDG2T20000N) supports flexible RAID configuration of either RAID 0 for disk striping speed or RAID 1 for data security.
  • newegg Great Connectivity The Western Digital My Book Premium II (Model WDG2T20000N) features one USB 2.0, one IEEE 1394a (FireWire 400) and two IEEE 1394b (FireWire 800) ports for maximum data transfer speeds and plug-and-play connectivity.
  • newegg Power/Activity and Capacity Gauge LEDs The outer ring LED indicates Power/Activity status, while the inner LED (Capacity Gauge) consists of six sections illuminating in a clockwise direction to indicate space used on the drive so you can easily know how much space is available on your storage system.

4 out of 5 eggsNo major problems

Pros: More than enough space, easy to install/set up RAID.

Cons: Depending on how you use it, it turns on when you turn on your computer and goes to sleep when you turn off your computer (unless it isn't plugged in of course). I recommend stopping the device and manually turning it off before shutting down your copmuter. Also, it seems to go into sleep mode a little too quickly when left unattended (somewhere around ten or fifteen minutes it seems).

Other Thoughts: Had a few issues whre my computer would not recognize the drive after it had already been formatted and used. Just had to turn off and unplug drive and reboot computer. Never lost any files luckily.

4 out of 5 eggsLove the storage

Pros: It's 2 TB. Perfect storage for all your data during deployments.

Cons: It's only loud when it's first starting up or when it's transferring mass amounts of data, but the loud is really loud. Kinda big. Wish the there was only one HD inside. Wish the transfer rate were a bit faster, but for the price.

Other Thoughts: Can't beat the price. I have two now.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent 2TB External HD

Pros: Comes with Backup Software, Raid configuration Software, and turned on using firewire 400 with no problems. I'm running it on Windows XP SP2. All cables came in the package. Stays cool.

Cons: Physically it is a bit large. That could be a pro (if you want to impress), but thing looks gigantic.

Other Thoughts: We are using this as a nightly backup solution for our in-house video editor station. It gets hundreds of gigabytes written to it every night. No problems yet.

2 out of 5 eggsVery flaky

Pros: Lots of space.

Cons: Drive "hooked" itself onto one system, and no matter how careful you were, even if you safely removed the drive from the system it would not connect to another computer. Tried numerous times, just wouldn't budge at all. Sent it back and got the My Book Pro II instead.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive!

Pros: Built-in RAID support. Users can replace the hard drives. Massive storage with the comfort of automatic backup via the built-in RAID. Easy to set up and to get up and running.

Cons: Sometimes it takes the drives a minute to come out of sleep mode. I haven't seen any instructions on what to do if one of the drives fails in RAID mode, although I may have missed them if they are buried in a help file somewhere.

Other Thoughts: I love these drives. I own 1 2TB model and 3 of the 1TB versions. They all operate flawlessly. With the built-in RAID it is comforting to know that I should never lose data due to hard drive failure again. The drives play nice together and with other drives, and the speed is fast enough even via USB that I never notice the fact that all the files are automatically being backed up on the 2d drive. Wonderful portable devices, I own these, a LACIE, and a Falcon external HD and these WD drives are by far the best.

Pros: Price is good compare to others

Cons: Kinda loud really , and USB speed is really slow ...

Other Thoughts: Have no firewire 800 (so ends up on a usb 2.0) The transfer speed is really slow (average 10-20mb/s ) gonna try to switch to firewire 800 once i can get a card on my head ..

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Huge drive, unbelievable price, insanely fast on the Firewire 800 (1394b).

Cons: Kind of large, hot, and loud. Not a sexy little thing like the Apple stuff I'm used to...very PCish and clunky looking.

Other Thoughts: If you're on an Apple, you order this, and find it to be DOA...it's not. A quick check reveals it's on an archaic file system for PC compatibility (master boot record...so it will work with FAT32 and NTFS...this is actually 80's tech, like PCs' "bios"). Partition it into 2 pieces so that under "options" you can chose "GUID file table". Once that's done you can make a single partition in HFS+ Journaled. Unless you have to be backwards compatible with a Vista or XP machine, you DO NOT WANT FAT32. NTFS and FAT32 are worthless compared to HFS+ Journaled. Take the time to change it. :-D You'll love it!

1 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital LOW QUALITY

Pros: Looks very nice on the desktop. Comes with multiple cables for a variety of connection types (e.g., firewire 400/800 and USB - no SATA).

Cons: Just received DOA - dead on arrival. Paid $420 for a piece of junk that won't even accept electricity. Mounted it next to my WD 500GB MyBook but no lights, no life. WD 500GB MyBook works fine with the 2TB cables so that's not an issue. Dead, dead, dead. Now the hassle of returning - from what I've heard, I won't even bother contacting Western Digital - they're customer no service would only compound the frustration.

Other Thoughts: Geez, you'd think they would at least plug them in before shipping ;-(
