1 out of 5 eggsAvoid!

Pros: There is nothing good to say about these drives.

Cons: These drives will be on the verge of failure, the second you start using them. They are not worth buying for any purpose and will end up costing you a lot more in time and replacement costs.

Other Thoughts: I bought 10 of these to run in workstations on a manufacturing floor. They were used in a RAID1 configuration. With the added redundancy RAID1 provides, I was less hesitant about using refurbished drives since you would have failover. The chances of losing both drives at the same time was remote. And since the price was right, I took my chances. This turned out to be a HUGE mistake. I had six drives fail after newegg's 30 day policy expired. Three workstations had double hard drive failures! That is unheard of and extremely rare with new drives.

These drives are complete junk. Absolutely worthless. Newegg should be ashamed of themselves for even keeping inventory on these. It's completely immoral to sell these to customers and let them eat the cost when they fall out of the 30 day warranty. Why would you tarnish a good reputation by selling such a shady product? I doubt they were even refurbished as most showed an ungodly amount of runtime hours on them when checking their S.M.A.R.T. data, and most appeared dusty and dirty when I opened the box.

To make matters worse, after only 40 days past the purchase date, all of my drives showed out of warranty status on Western Digital's website by a number of years! How can this be when Newegg posts a 90 day manufacture's warranty on the product listing?

If you're the type that reads bad reviews and thinks they will take a chance on these drives anyway, do yourself a favor and buy something else. If you already bought them, check the warranty status on WD's website as soon as possible. If the warranty is expired, send them back to Newegg before their 30 day policy expires or end up paying for a paperweight.

I wish I could give zero eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap and functional

Pros: Cost only $13 with promo
works perfectly
fast shipping

Cons: Nothing whatsoever

Other Thoughts: Came packaged in a bubble wrap sleeve formed specifically to fit a hard drive; I thought it was a nice touch.

Drive was perfect for my media pc, I only needed enough space to install windows since the files are on another machine.

5 out of 5 eggscheap backup

Pros: Very inexpensive secondary hard drive used for backups of main system

Cons: Refurbished drives are not always the most reliable media, but they are the least expensive.

Other Thoughts: At this price you could buy several just in case you got a bad one. To try to send a bad one back is false economy.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks but...

Pros: I picked up 2 on sale for 15 each. Great buy. They do spin up and with a little work are able to be recognized with windows and instal Linux. See other.

Cons: No master boot record, and possibly might of had a hidden system restore left on the lba3 and drives were showing less then they should of un-formatted even with WD software. See other thoughts for what I did. Yes the drives were dirty with dust on the under side but that didn't stop it from working. I have cleaned up worse where computers were owned by people have shedding pets or a wood stove or both.

Other Thoughts: Both spun up and Windows did recognized the drive BUT only in device manager (expand the disk drives) not my computer, and with disk management it couldn't see it to give it a drive letter (right click computer and select mange to get to those). There was no master boot record.

So if you get this drive you will need something like Ultimate boot CD, which is free iso download. Write zeros to the complete drive (I used HDshredder), Then fdisk, write MBR and format. Or any other tools on the UBC that will do that. Now the drives are full volume and recognized to instal an OS or use as external drive. If in windows it is still not showing up then try going into disk management and you will see drive but no drive letter. You just have to assign a letter in disk management. I hope this saves anybody from having to get a replacement getting the same kind of drive back, which is frustrating.

When using ultimate boot CD if your nervous of accidentally deleting files to your main HD to your computer just disconnect the power to that drive until you are done with UBCD. Also Hiron's boot cd also works to get the tools needed instead of UBCD. Some people might like the Mini Windows Xp that runs off the RAM in Hiron's

I got these to make a few cheap Linux media centers to give away to some families so they can ditch their cable bill. They have been working without issue.

1 out of 5 eggs1/5 failed within a couple weeks

Pros: They're cheap and most function.

Cons: As noted in initial review, 2/5 I ordered had data already on them. Another failed within a couple weeks (it is still semi-functional, but BSODs and has hard system hangs, fails SMART checks). Another is struggling and hangs for long periods of time when it needs to retrieve minimal amounts of data, but does usually recover, though it sometimes fails to boot, which is a PitA since it's a remote machine.

Other Thoughts: Given the failure rate (though I have a low sample size), I won't be buying WD refurbs again, even though they're still ultimately cheap given a 40% defect rate (not worth the headaches and down-time). WD needs to check with whoever's claiming to refurb these drives and intervene (or fix their own process).

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: NONE

Cons: I tested the drive before installing operating system and it checked out ok. After installing the operating system I got an error on bootup and the operating system would not boot up.

Other Thoughts: My bad, I read all of the reviews and I still was not a believer. I'm $40+ into a "USED" 80 GB HD. I'm sending it back for replacement but there are still no guarantees. Cleaning and polishing the outside of the drive does not meet "Factory Refurbished" standards. Stop with false advertising.

1 out of 5 eggsBad drive

Pros: None, Not cheap any more consider all the shipping you end up paying for replacement.

Cons: Replacement of a defective drive. This replacement is also defective. How many times we need to replace this item. The shipping itself would pay for it already. However, on the principle that you guy should be responsible for your product, I am still going to send this back for replacement until you get this right.
