Western Digital's My Book Home is the latest evolution in their long history of back up devices. This 320GB drive has a triple interface for maximum connectivity. The USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 interfaces allow you to connect to virtually any modern Mac or PC. If you need maximum data transfer rates then you can attach the drive to your system through the eSATA interface.
A capacity gauge on the front panel lets you know how much room you have left on the drive when it is connected to either a USB or FireWire port. The rest of the housing is designed to vent heat away from the drive to keep it cool and save your data. The auto standby mode will save your power bill by kicking in after 10 minutes of inactivity but will be ready to spring back into action immediately.

- Pros: It uses Firewire 400, which frees up a USB on my laptop, and can maintain ~42MB/sec transfer speed for most copy paste backups (effectively filling out the entire Firewire bandwidth). I just plugged it in to a Vista system and it just worked.
- Cons: Can be a little fiddly when plugging it in, sometimes the drive will start up but won't register in the system.
- Other Thoughts: As with all My Books, I comes formatted as a FAT32. If you have to store a file more than 4GiB in size you will need to reformat the drive. Also, it comes with a USB and 6-pin Firewire cable.
Works OK if you don't mind USB
- Pros: This drive is affordable, has a cool white light on the front that looks a bit like night rider when the drive is in use (It goes back and forth). It comes with everything you need to hook it up to Firewire or USB.
- Cons: I have 2 fire wire cards in my PC and use several Firewire drives. I bought this drive as a secondary photo backup unit for my wedding photography business (we keep two copies of everything). This drive had all kinds of errors in firewire mode, and only works in USB 2.0 Mode, which is much slower, of course. Since I am copying about 290 GB at a time, it takes about 3 hours or more to copy the data using USB, where it would have taken about 40 mins using Firewire... Oh Well.
- Other Thoughts: despite my frustration with the firewire situation, this drive works fine and serves its purpose well. for the most part it is going to be in storage at another location as it is archival only.

Works Great
- Pros: Worked right out of the box. the extra software was no big deal, I just deleted it after hooking up. It doesnt make any noise and is relatively fast.
- Cons: The cord they give you is no that long, so I ordered a longer one as well just in case. However, it was long enough, so no harm done.
- Other Thoughts: I like that it has a 16 mb cache. I dont know if other WD have that feature, but its deffinately a nice feature to have.
- Pros: Works excellently. Wiped the drive, erasing the pointless WD software and formatted it as Ext3. Works great as a drive, cool, quiet, and fast. USB 2.0 interface works great. Never had any trouble.
- Cons: None. Might want to trash the useless software that comes with it, but that's just my personal opinion. Also, NTFS is a terrible filesystem to use, but most users use Windows.
- Other Thoughts: Great drive, works fine. Hasn't died, owned it for about 3 months now.
CrUD
- Pros: It looks ok
- Cons: It died after copying 2gb to it. Basically it lasted for less than an hour, and I was never able to turn it back on.
- Other Thoughts: I bought the 160 passbook as a replacement and it seems to be functioning alright.
