Makes a great boot drive...
- Pros: If you're looking for a fast, quiet, reliable, cool-running and inexpensive boot drive, this is it. It seems that every time I buy a new hard disk, I'm finding that they just run quieter and quieter than the last disk did when it was new.
If your SATA controller can handle the 3 gigabit data rate, this drive won't hold you back. For those who have SATA controllers that are problematic, Western Digital makes forcing the drive down to the 1.5 gigabit data rate easy, with the simple installation of a jumper over a set of pins. Many other drives require awkward DOS-based software configuration.
As many computer users store their data separately from the operating system, and most operating systems don't consume that much disk space, this drive is a perfect choice for a boot/startup drive. Why waste a huge drive when you don't have to.
- Cons: If there are any, I haven't found them. In the face of larger drives, it seems that this one could be priced lower. However, if that means a tradeoff of quality for price, though, I'd rather pay the price.
- Other Thoughts: I've had good results with Western Digital hard drives over the years, and while their competition (most notably Seagate) seem to be experimenting with how thin and cheap a low-capacity hard drive can be, this drive seems to be a solid, well built choice. If you need a new boot drive, or just want to give your SATA-equipped system a performance boost, this drive represents a good choice for a reasonable price.
Solid HD
- Pros: Rock solid HD! Used it for two years in a computer I built and never had one problem with it. Was the first HD that I had that I couldn't hear it when it was retrieving data, very quiet. Can't address durability as I replaced it with a 500 GB after the 2 year period but I was pleased enough with the performance to buy another Western Digital.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I have Ubuntu Linux on my computer and I wish that Western Digital had more support for people with Linux as an OS. May switch to a more Linux friendly hard drive manufacturer the next HD I get if WD doesn't improve their Linux support.
Great!!
- Pros: Newegg got it there quickly. easy install. Got both going at the same time.
- Cons: None so far.
