Features

Features
Quiet - In a notebook drive, silence is golden. WD's exclusive WhisperDrive combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to yield one of the quietest 2.5-inch hard drives on the market. These algorithms also optimize the way a drive seeks for data, which significantly improves power consumption. So now silence (and longer battery life) is golden.
Reliable and Rugged - WD's ShockGuard technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks. WD's SecurePark parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear, and improved non- operational shock tolerance.
Tested for Compatibility - We perform tests on hundreds of systems and a multitude of platforms in our FIT Lab and Mobile Compatibility Lab to give our customers confidence that our drives will work in their systems.

5 out of 5 eggsI really like this product

Pros: I love this hard drive. I bought this for my laptop, and now the laptop has failed and this hard drive is still rocking. It now sits in my desktop hardly making noise as some hardware can.

Cons: I haven't found one, or one hasn't come up yet.

Other Thoughts: I do not have any additional thoughts at this time.

4 out of 5 eggsBackup HDD

Pros: One of the three drives stopped spinning-up after 2.5 years with an 11-day cycle (backing up every 11 days). We take these drives to the bank for off-site backup.

Cons: These are relatively slow drives. We have a couple of 500GB 7200RPM drives that are ready earlier in the day

Other Thoughts: We backup over 300GB of data on a daily basis, then zip it up with a password to one of these HDDs. It has worked with very few problems for years. The more data we save the longer it takes, but we do get a full daily off-site backup.

I will be replacing the failed drive with a 500GB 7200RPM drive.

We previously thought that an overnight backup to a 5400RPM drive was adequate - but since the backup has grown significantly, 7200RPM has proven to be a better choice.

1 out of 5 eggsDies After Almost 3 Years

Pros: 320GB space
Western Digital in general is a great company

Cons: This hard drive was found in my MSI CR600 laptop. After three years of use, I was hearing unusual clicks coming from it. That is the click of death and the worst death when it comes to hard drives. I knew the end was coming so I had to back it up in a hurry.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital is good, but this hard drive is a miss for them.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: working good so far with a very high smarts LLC count... going to crash first or later

Cons: Makes high clicking noise when goes in idle to park the heads since day1. Really annoying as it happens after 8secs of inactivity. Avoid WD drives. Their intellipark 'feature' =P is the worst nightmare ever.

Other Thoughts: Tried with wddidle3 - /d /s300 - nothing worked. Drive becomes irresponsible and w7 wouldn't even start. Replacing the original APM configuration fixed the issue =P

WD doesn't care.. and so people should care avoiding to buy this products.

2 out of 5 eggson my 3rd

Pros: -RMA process is good
-plenty of space for multiple OS installs

Cons: -not reliable
-5400RPM is slow

Other Thoughts: This is a good storage drive, not a good OS drive. I am just now sending in my 2nd drive to get my 3rd RMA of this model. Western Digitals RMA process is simple and fast, so that's the only reason I gave it 2 stars! The drive is in a laptop, so of course it gets moved around a bit, but this is 3 drives in 4 years -- unacceptable track record.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drive

Pros: Used it for an Xbox 360 upgrade; works great, and is a lot bigger than the 20 GB drive it came with.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This is one of the only drives Newegg sells that will work as an Xbox 360 upgrade drive. If you're going to do it, you can't just pop the drive in. You have to rewrite the firmware, and then open up your old drive case to install it. The process can seem daunting, but it really isn't that difficult. You do have to void the warranty for the original Xbox drive, but not for the console itself. Excellent upgrade!

5 out of 5 eggs2 years, still going ...

Pros: I use this disk as portable commuter drive. As such, the drive is backed up regularly (full-backup, i.e. whole disk read 1-2x a week) and it experiences a round trip-commute in my jacket pocket every day. I ride a motorcycle, and make sure it stays dry and ~room temperature, but there's nothing I can do other than a neoprene sleeve to insulate the drive against constant jiggling and bumps during commuting.

In addition, I installed the drive in a two-part enclosure. The first part contains a metal shell and USB host. The second part is installed in a desktop and allows for SATA access. The second part has lousy air flow, so I modded the second part to include an 80 mm fan. All said and done, the drive approaches 48 C during backups, and is ~38 C at multi-day steady-state idle.

After two years of use I have no relocated sectors, no high-fly writes, no errors of any kind. The SMART data shows perfect health.

Cons: none AFAIK.

4 out of 5 eggsStill running after 3 years.

Pros: It works as expected.

Cons: It's not very quick as its 5400 RPM.

Other Thoughts: I ran it in my Sony Vaio F for a year, and then I put it in my PS3 which is where it still is today.
