5 out of 5 eggsReliable.

Pros: Power on hours currently at 59980; almost time for the 60k party. That's nearly 7 years of 24/7 uninterrupted service; three system rebuilds, including a SFF that was shipped around the US multiple times in less than ... ideal conditions. Probably the longest running piece of computer hardware that's currently running in my systems.

Cons: 640GB is getting a little small.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital and HGST are the companies to beat in mechanical storage.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going

Pros: I bought three of these almost eight years ago. Since then all three have about 35,000 power_on_hours. One developed some bad sectors a couple years ago but after a reformat is still usable. I am using that one as a secondary backup. The other two are all good.

Cons: I seem to remember having to flash the firmware in order to get these to run in RAID. Wasn't a problem though.

Other Thoughts: They don't make them like they used too. Since I bought these, over the years I've probably returned a sixth of the hard drives I've bought due to failures **cough** seagate **cough**

Also, I paid about ninety dollars eight years ago for one of these. Today in 2014 it is three dollars less than what I paid.

5 out of 5 eggs6 + years w/o a hickup

Pros: This Hdd has been thru four builds in the last 8 years being primary for the first three and serving like movies and music storage for the rest of the time, just checked it yesterday and still going strong after all this years, unfortunately WD has not keep the same quality level in their equipment and it`s very rare to see a hdd being make lately going over three years w/o faults or problems, the same for other brands, other two Samsung F1 from about same time still working, hdd`s bought later than that are already history in my builds..

Cons: it`s not bigger.

Other Thoughts: Hitachi 7k2000 and 7k3000 are building reputation for longevity, that can change now that Hitachi hdd lines has being sold to WD. There are not Seagate older than two year in my pc`s anymore, all gone`s, no more Seagate ever.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid at 4 years

Pros: 7200 RPM, Good storage capactiy, solid reliability

Cons: 640 GB has gotten to be a bit small for a lot of people, but its still a great drive.

Other Thoughts: I've been shopping around for some new hard drives to throw into my PC for a while. I'd love a SSD for the OS and a 2 TB for bulk storage, but I thought I'd look up my current hard drive while I was at it. And since I know the true value of a hard drive is measured in its lifespan and reliability, I thought I'd leave a review, in case someone comes across one of these at a great price.
