1 out of 5 eggsfalse advertising

Pros: They work (so far).

SMART readouts indicate a high level of health on most parameters, except for one that is the most critical.

They do not seem to have any issues with surface read writes. All sectors are healthy without any bad or reassigned. both HDDs were surface tested twice with two different utilities, and both have been low-level formatted twice specifically to stress them and try to detect potential problems.

Cons: These are not Western Digital Blue Caviar HDDs.

And, that's just plain fraudulent.

These are very clearly advertised as WD BLUE drives, but thay are in fact manufactured at least 4-5 years before Western Digital used the terms "Blue" as part of their color-code scheme.

What these are are HDDs manufactured in 2005 when they were called Western Digital Caviar drives. When I saw these advertised as Blue HDDs, I specifically expected them to be no more than about 5 years old at the most.

The "refurbished" is also misleading, at best. Refurbished usually applies to equipment that has been returned for some reason, and that it is checked and repaired as necessary to bring it up to spec.

These drives are pulls from old systems. The SMART stat for hours in service is a 7 for one of them and a 1 for the other (that's deprecated down from 100 at full health ~0 hours service to threshold of 1, which is total service hours equal to MEan Time Between FAILure, MBT) .. meaning they were powered on since 2005 more or less continuously, then pulled from systems because they are a heartbeat away from the last few hours of their life expectancy.

Also, of the two purchased, one was received with corrosion visible on various parts and pins and a layer of extremely fine dust adhering to every surface -- including the circuit board -- that had to be carefully damp-wiped and brushed off. It was semi-glued on as if it had been in a chain-smokers office for ten years and saturated with tobacco tar and smoke particles.

Other Thoughts: One HDD I expect has enough life in it for light use, perhaps for a year or three yet. Just because the SMART is hitting the threshold on MBT doesn't mean that a good, well protected HDD can't survive well beyond that MBT.

The other HDD I doubt is long for the world. Fortunately I can put it in service where it will run 'til it dies and I have a back-up waiting to take it's place. For $9, it's purpose is to extend the life of that other HDD.

But, it's incredibly disappointing to see the massive hours put on these drives. Calling these drives "refurbished" is outright fraud, as is designating them as models that were manufactured half a decade after these left the factory.

The other SMART statistics are generally between 90% and 100% of their premium health. I expect that's why they are calling them "refurbished." They just haven't deteriorated in those areas (yet).

One HDD had been through ~50 power cycles, while the other had been through ~400. I expect these were pulled from server duty once they were old, or their systems were replaced with more modern equipment.

These are a major gamble under these conditions. Due to their length of service combined with high health stats in most categories, they do have the potential to run another 10,000 hours. A "burned-in" HDD like these could just keep running and running, especially if babied along and well-cared for.

However, I was also expecting HDDs that were actual Western Digital Blue drives, which would have had half these hours on them. That's an inexcusable deception.

I am also left wondering who is the actual "refurbishing" entity. All links lead to the Western Digital websites, but I actually expect these are pulls by a third party vendor that is not identified anywhere in thy chain of custody and purchase.

Will not be buying again.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked.

Pros: + It worked in the first place, a lot more than some refurbished products can say.
+ Setup had no hassle, no weird partitions or remaining files, it was empty and ready to go.
+ Installed an OS like a pro.

Cons: - It's refurbished, so I'm worried it might fail, but I didn't deduct anything for that, because I willingly bought something refurbished.

1 out of 5 eggsRun Away

Pros: This is the third drive in a row that showed up bad. The first one showed disk errors after operating system install, the second would not be recognized by the computer and the third has S.M.A.R.T. capability showing bad. This is the last purchase from New Egg.

Cons: ALL OF THEM

4 out of 5 eggsNo problem

Pros: cheap, cheap cheap

Cons: A little used looking, but expected that.

Other Thoughts: Came right up ... had one bad sector. Use it for temp photo storage on a Linux system. No big deal if it dies.

5 out of 5 eggsMoney Saver

Pros: Bought it as a refurbished hard drive - but after installing it, made no difference compared to a new one.
I do not understand why folks should prefer refurbished over new items from Newegg.

Cons: Did not find any defects.

4 out of 5 eggsSimple IDE ATA HDD

Pros: Simple IDE HDD, does with it should do, Western Digital quality

Cons: It's a IDE HDD. Old technology is getting harder to come by when refurbishing older computers.

Other Thoughts: It's getting harder to find IDE HDD since manufacturers are starting to phase these out. Good luck finding a new one cheaper than the SATA types. Refurbished ones are fine as long you don't get the bad batch.

Hopefully, the ones I got are good.
