This is a 5400rpm drive
- Pros: Completely SILENT. Runs COLD to the touch compared to my other drives. 320gb platters! No vibration at all!
- Cons: This is NOT a 7200rpm drive. It is fixed at 5400rpm. This has been proven via access times. No, the RPM does not vary either based on load. Western Digital CONFIRMS this drive as fixed 5400rpm. Newegg website is WRONG!
- Other Thoughts: Even at 5400rpm its still a fast drive due to dense 320gb platters! Perfect for secondary storage drive or in USB enclosures, or HTPC.
Nice & Quiet - So Far So Good
- Pros: I bought two of these drives for the Gentoo Linux Shuttle PC I built, which is on 24/7 and used primarily for hardware and software engineering. I use one as the main drive, and another in an external enclosure which backs up the main drive and can be swapped quickly if the main drive fails.
I always try to hit the sweet spot of quiet and performance, and this drive fills the bill nicely. The only time I can hear this drive is when it's seeking, which it does with a faint clicking sound, sorta like a cricket in a padded box. I get about 588G after formatting with EXT3. It runs cool in both my Shuttle and the external USB/SATA enclosure. It seems more than fast enough for me, but I'm not a gamer or server admin so that's not my main criteria anyway. Combine this drive with the fastest fanless PCIe video card you can find, and an ICE-cooled Shuttle (I'm running an overclocked 3GHz Q6600 with no problems) and you have a whisper-quiet workstation or HTPC solution.
- Cons: Western Digital. I've had problems with their drives in the past. I've been using mostly the quiet Seagate series, and the Samsung Spinpoints recently, but during this round of purchasing these Western Digitals seem to be the quietest and lowest power out there. With the drive density curve, about two years should be long enough, and then it's on to terrabyte territory. Until then, I've got the backup too...
- Other Thoughts: Neither the other reviewers, or Newegg, are completely correct. Western Digital rates the speed of this drive as 'IntelliPower', which means it varies between 5400 and 7200 RPM depending on loading. The Silent PC Review site has an informative post on this drive tabulating the differences between the AALS, AAKS and AACS versions of this WD 640G drive series. The other two drives are a constant 7200 RPM, so they naturally will run faster during access, at least initially. However, this drive runs 0.46W, 2.5w, and 5.4W standby, idle and R/W watts, versus 1W, 7.7W and 8.3W respectively for the other two. If you're looking for max performance, this isn't the right drive for you. However, if you're willing to trade some performance for a lot less power, heat and noise, this is a great choice.

When a product is good you notice the little things...
- Pros: Easy to set up through the Western Digital site. The Western Digital program for cloning my old hard drive to the new one worked well. Even going from EIDE to Sata wasn't a problem.
Everything seems to work fine, and performance has improved quite a bit. Shipping was quick as usual from Newegg.
- Cons: It's somewhat more loud than I expected. It's not that it's loud in it's own right, it might be whisper soft compared to the high pitched hum of my other components and fans, but when it's actively seeking it's sound is a low pitched rumble more like a kid blowing bubbles in his milk through a straw. It's just so noticable, while the hum is just background.
- Other Thoughts: Pentium 4 system from back when the Blue Man Group commercials were still going on.
My fault, but didn't know my old hard drive was EIDE (yes, did check that my Mobo had SATA hookups), so ended up shelling out a (relative) fortune for a new cable at Best Buy, when I expected to just plug it in with the old cable.
Nice drive but with limitations
- Pros: I have had this drive installed for nearly a year, had several OS installed, Linux, OSx86 and XP. The drive is very quiet, but you may hear the head park often though it's very subdued. Temperatures are low which in a small form factor PC with limited cooling, is an added bonus.
- Cons: Not the fastest but works for the average user, probably better as a storage disk then for OS if you want max. performance. Head park/load cycle count seems to be an issue with Linux based OS which may cause the drive to reach the 300K load/unload cycles in less then a year. I noticed using HDtune that this was evident when using Linux. WD released a patch to fix this but some have said it does little to help.
- Other Thoughts: WD makes good drives in my opinion, if your using Linux or have these in a NAS that runs Linux you may want to check the drive health more often then what's usual.
yep
- Pros: WD..always has been reliable for me. Would have preferred the 32 MB cache but this one was on uber sale for 10 bucks less than usual. Been happy ever since.
- Cons: Doesn't bring breakfast in bed.
- Other Thoughts: Tucans are cool birds.
