5 out of 5 eggsSolid Raid Performer

Pros: We use WD RE3 750s and 500s in a number of raid systems. Compared to other brands, the WD RE3s have been the most dependable. We do occasionally have a drive go bad, but with over 70 drives installed, that is bound to happen.
We run raid 6, which will tolerate two failed drives. Typically if a drive dies it is only one at a time. HOWEVER, we did lose a fan in a computer once that cause over heating and we did lose two drives, so it can happen.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The RE3s are for heavy duty (think continuous 24x7x365 use) and/or raid use. If your needs don't fit that description, you may be better off with the a WD Caviar or similar.

1 out of 5 eggs7 of 12 DOA... totally unacceptable!

Pros: I began favoring RE3 drives after another vendor's enterprise-class "bricking" debacle; vendor/model/firmware details withheld to comply with Newegg guidelines. Previous batches of RE3 -- a few dozen 750 GB and 1 TB and a lone 320 GB -- have been good, with strong performance and at least decent reliability...

Cons: ...but seven out of twelve drives were DOA with the latest batch. Dead. On. Arrival. Not detectable by RAID card (Adaptec 51245), nor on-board (Supermicro X8DTL) SATA.

Other Thoughts: I'd best run "smartmontools" to check the other five drives. I'm feeling paranoid now.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: SATA > IDE hard drives

Cons: I'm a dummy and was so excited after ordering my parts, that I forgot to order an exact duplicate of this. Why? Well because you need 2 in order to run a RAID 0, RAID 1. 'nuff said.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Drives

Pros: Good speed, works well in RAID. I have this running in a RAID0 configuration. Haven't had any heat issues with these drives. Fairly quiet.

Cons: Bought two. One was defective and I had to RMA it. Replacement drive is working fine.

Other Thoughts: I would buy again. Just a shame that I had to RMA one.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid enterprise-class drives

Pros: The drives seem very well built. I had no problems setting up a RAID 1E array with a LSI 1068 RAID controller on a Asus P5BV/SAS mobo. Performance is noticeably better than the older 150G Raptors they replaced.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The drives were dropped shipped to my house and packed very well. Thank you New Egg.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good HDD

Pros: Faster, Cooler & Quieter than the 2 Hitachis I bought (500 & 1tb)

Cons: It's a hdd & it's not free. Price is high for a hdd but it has decent performance. Besides Ssds are 2 small for 2 much $.

Other Thoughts: Have 3 hdds with XPpro on 1, Vista Ulti on 2, & Win7 RC1 on this hdd. This hdd performs best, but it mite be OS. After Win7 release mite do raid1 with a 2nd 1 of these, & dump Vista, since it's an RE (raid edition) drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWD is Awesome!

Pros: I havent got the drive yet, and I didnt get it from Newegg, but I thought Id share my experience with WD as a company.

A while back, I bought a WD5000YS, which is the RE2 500GB version of this Caviar series. It worked, but I have had it fail multiple times with RMA's every time. I finally emailed WD asking for an RMA, but a different model. I requested a similar sized drive with similar speeds, just not the same model. They hooked me up with this drive, free of charge with advanced RMA shipping and prepaid return shipping for my trouble.

This cements the fact that even the best companies can have bad products, but the greatest companies are the ones that go out of their way to make sure the customer is taken care of if they have these types of problems. Thank you WD.

Cons: Read above.

4 out of 5 eggsfast

Pros: Fast drives. I set two of these up in a RAID 1 array on a linux file server. hdparm reported file transfer rate of about 108MB/sec. Not bad!

I also tried in a RAID 0 array, and it reported 200MB/sec. Phew....

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsNice for RAID

Pros: Good performance. Safely shipped in adequate bubble wrap.

Cons: Price.

Other Thoughts: Spent extra on these to avoid RAID issues. So far, so good. Windows Experience Index went to 5.9. Noticeably more responsive than my old WD drives they replaced.
