5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Purchased 4/3/2009, still using it as of 4/28/2014 for archival backups.

Cons: Sometimes takes a few seconds to spin up upon first access.

Other Thoughts: Would buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsLasted 5 years

Pros: Lasted 5 years

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This drive was run as part of a RAID NAS 24x7x365 for about 5 years. Finally failed after that time. I'm happy with that performance. Never had any issues prior to that. I had another of these drives that failed after about 3 years. I'd like it if they run forever, but for this level of drive, I guess that's what you get.

3 out of 5 eggsGood value for the cost, but only lasted 4 years

Pros: Was a great buy when I bought this drive 4 years ago at $70.00. It has run in my desktop since it was installed to replace another failed WD drive. I use it for storage, not the boot drive.

Cons: Only lasted 4 years and now is not recognized at all but still spins. not bad for a spindle HDD, but I've seen other drives last longer.

Other Thoughts: Seems like HDs just don't last like they used to. I remember older HDDs used to last forever, but now it seems like it is the most common thing to fail.

3 out of 5 eggsLasted 3.5 years of lite use

Pros: Thought I would submit this just to have it on record...

The drive made it through the warranty years with no problems. Like some others, it dies not long after.

Cons: Given the relatively light use (mostly unused in the first year, then nightly cron backups later on), hoped it would last longer.

Other Thoughts: I have other WD drives that refuse to give up, despite heavy DVR usage. You just never know...

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Lasted nearly 4 years as a storage drive; was a good drive and didn't encounter any issues with it in the meantime. I had a bit of prior notice up until the hard drive dying, at least; Windows would stop recognizing it now and then, and it would show up again after a reboot so I had plenty of time to back up my data.

Cons: Dead now, but I suppose it's about time for a larger replacement anyhow.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't make it your OS drive

Pros: Cheap, lots of space, been working for more than 3 years now (purchased 8/25/2009).
Don't make this your primary OS drive. It wasn't designed to be fast, it was designed to save power. Instead, use it for backup, extra storage, etc.

Cons: Nothing really.

Other Thoughts: I think my boss tried fitting his TiVo with a WD green drive and had problems, but may have been a different model.
