The Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB Hard Drive uses less power and supports quieter, cooler-running desktop PCs. Its breakthrough 32 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle high-end data-intensive and multimedia applications.
This hard drive incorporates WD’s GreenPower technology, which yields lower operating temperatures and low acoustics, best for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives use. The IntelliPower delivers a fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms; IntelliSeek Calculates optimum seek speeds; and IntelliPark automatically unloads the heads during idle. All the features help the drive to operation in lower power consumption and reduced noise environment.

The technology just isn't there.
- Pros: Huge capacity.
- Cons: Poor quality control. We have ordered 5 of these drives for clients - we are working on RMA #3. The first drive was DOA - click of death. The replacement was fine. Then we ordered two more a few months later - one seemed fine, the other was DOA - once again the COD. A week after installing the seemingly fine drive we are seeing signs of failure (had to rebuild a RAID) and hearing ominous sounds coming from the drive.
- Other Thoughts: I run a computer repair shop. Western Digital has long been a trusted name in hard drive storage - but I wouldn't trust a drive larger than 500GB from them until they get these production kinks worked out. As of this writing the WD10EADS does not have a firmware fix available.... not that it would fix a click of death failure.
QUIET
- Pros: I've never in my life had such a quiet hard drive. In addition, it has a 32MB cache which is good for a low-power drive.
If you're looking for performance go with the Caviar Black for a bit more money. If you want cheap or quiet storage and performance isn't your main concern I would definitely recommend this drive!
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I put two 1TB greens in a mirror on an ICH8R and I couldn't be happier.
I've been dissapointed with Seagate for a couple of years now, and they were once the only brand I would buy. Seagate is still my drive of choice for SCSI/SAS, however in the SATA / desktop world I avoid seagate like the plague. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the purchase of Maxtor, but their quality of late has really sufferred.
The last 4 drives I bought were 7200.10's @ 320GB and they're LOUD and have a very obnoxious and seemingly random click (that sounds more like the head slamming the side of the drive than a seek)
Go western digital. You won't be dissapointed.

Perfect for NAS
- Pros: I've had five of these bad boys in a QNAP TS-509 RAID5 array for the last 8 months or so. The only error I've experienced was due to a QNAP firmware issue, and not the drive itself. These drives seem very robust with plenty of longevity. Power consumption is very low, and the drives spin-down as they should. 5400 RPM is more than adequate when streaming a media library over a gigabit ethernet (and wireless N) connection. More RPMs only mean something if you use this as a primary OS drive (access time). Truly plug-and-play in my setup. Large storage, no complaints.
After several attempts at utilizing 1TB Seagate Barracudas (several died within several months), these hard drives are a breath of fresh air. WD10EADS may be the gold standard for high capacity storage drives.
- Cons: None, but I'll be sure to report back if any of the six drives I have purchased fail under warranty.
- Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a large storage drive with minimal power consumption, there's absolutely no reason not to click "add to cart" right now.
Great mid-performance drive
- Pros: Excellent drive for moderate speed demands, higher capacity, and low power. I have not had one fail, but apparently some have been shipping DoA. Failure rate is much lower than Seagate Barracuda LP drives.
- Cons: None. Did not buy for high performance. There are better drives for that.
- Other Thoughts: People should read the specs before they buy. The description says: "The IntelliPower delivers a fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms; IntelliSeek Calculates optimum seek speeds; and IntelliPark automatically unloads the heads during idle." If you expect the drive to run at 7200 or more all the time, this should have been a clue that it probably won't.
Great
- Pros: Overall it's a great HD.
- Cons: None that I've found
