5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: Works great. Spins down when not in use. Had running 24/7 for like a year now, no faults.

Cons: Because it spins down to save power in Win7 when you double click a disk that has not been used recently it takes a 2-4 seconds to spin up and show the drive contents. I guess that is better than wasting energy all the time tho.

1 out of 5 eggsOnly hard drive to die on me

Pros: The drive worked for almost a year.

Cons: The drive died after 11 months and I lost plenty of data.

Other Thoughts: I know hard drives fail, but this is the first drive of mine to fail and I've used plenty of other hard drives (Maxtor and Western Digital) far more and for far longer. Data loss is very inconvenient.

4 out of 5 eggscool runnings

Pros: have 3 of these, nice and spacious, cool running drives, and have yet to have any SERIOUS issues.

Cons: had them in raid5 for about 2 months, then started to get one of them dropping out, failing SMART. backed up, dropped them into ahci mode, problems solved

Other Thoughts: I know these aren't raid certified drives, but when are the disc manufactures going to start putting out green versions that will be capable of doing raid without all the hubbub, enquiring minds want to know.

5 out of 5 eggs11 Greens Online 24/7 Still Going Strong

Pros: I currently own 11 of these drives and I haven't had a single problem with any of them. They've all run smoothly and data transfers are quick, easily saturating the bonded dual gigabit connection on my main file server (2Gb/s). Of course this is from 6 of them built into a RAID. (Attached to the Adaptec 31205 HBA). They run quiet, although they're in a server, what interested me was the power consumption. All of my servers (3) only draw around 500 watts, completely loaded down with drives that are always spinning... Personally I love them.

Cons: I cut my hand on the packaging material, but you don't get that with a bare drive...

Other Thoughts: The configuration has 6 of them residing in one server built into a RAID5 array and another 4 are in another RAID5 array in different server. I use them to house everything from my personal files, to movies that I stream to up to 8 devices around the house. The last drive serves CD Images and houses non-crucial data in a VMware ESXI white box that runs alongside the other two servers. All of the drives are attached to some form of Adaptec's HBAs.

5 out of 5 eggsBe Green, Be Happy

Pros: Great price, quiet, impressive speed, energy efficient. This drive is perfect for storage only. I would not use it as an OS drive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Since this is an energy efficient drive, be aware that the drive automatically spins down when not in use. You have to wait a few seconds for the spin up to complete. I don't think there is a way to disable this.

1 out of 5 eggsNOT TOO GOOD!

Pros: Quiet
RMAs are easy to complete online

Cons: Epic Fail

Other Thoughts: First one was DOA
Replacement lasted 32 days
Next replacement lasted 93 days - just finished RMA
They are getting better. By the fifth one I should be able to get a year's runtime out of it.

Pros: superb, i have almost filled this one up, definitely going to buy another, going with the 1.5 to 2 TB this time though

1 out of 5 eggsNot cool.

Pros: none.

Cons: To make a very long story short, do not buy this drive UNLESS you plan on using it on a Windows system. The intelli-park technology on these WD green drives causes serious lag issues on non-windows systems when NOT under disk load. The drive heads park every 8 seconds when idle, and do not come back for another 25 -- causing lag and a serious amount of wear & tear on the drive as well. The Load_Cycle_Count for these drive is designed to max out at 300,000 -- after which your drive is likely to die. I already have accrued roughly 35,600 Load cycles: at this rate the drive will be dead in as little as 5 months. The lag issue alone is enough reason to not use this drive -- but coupled with the load cycle/lifespan issue -- the message is clear: Stay away (unless you use windows exclusively).

Those of you using linux who gave this drive a good review will likely be singing a different tune in a few months. Check your drive with smartctl, you will see what I mean.

Other Thoughts: WD refuses to acknowledge this issue and will not help, but it is well documented many places on the web (if you look). Personally, I shifted my system to another drive, and all problems abated immediately.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Western Digital HD

Pros: Good and really quiet Hard Disk compared to others.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Good if you want to make your Desktop PC or Server more silence. Not fast like others 7,200 RPM HD but you have to sacrifice speed for silent.

4 out of 5 eggsGood HDD

Pros: Plenty of space and easy to hook up. So far I haven't had any problems with performance and it's quiet.

Cons: It doesn't come allocated or formatted, you'll need to do this manually.

Other Thoughts: I set this up as a secondary drive for all my personal files. At first it wouldn't install on the system. You have to use your administrator tools built into windows to allocate the space and give it a partition (not a big deal)

Pros: Good space, low power, cool running

Cons: It died

Other Thoughts: First time WD drive go bad on me. I have used tens of these, along with Seagate and Maxtor drives and WD has been always better in terms of reliabiliy, but not this one.. It dies with the spinning up/down noises and clicking, taking down ~ 10,000 photos with it.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I have heard some bad reviews about the WD 1 TB drives, but I've found nothing to complain about. The system it is on serves as a home entertainment center. This system holds every CD and LP in my poession and I havent even put a dent in the disk space. Even converting old VHS tapes to AVI or wmv format it still has plenty of room to spair. I can remember living with an orignal IBM PC XT. This WD 1TB makes that 10 Meg hard drive look like a single sided floppy.

Cons: Even on a 'fast' system it sure took a long time to format. What would you expect.

Other Thoughts: Currently I am running 8 WD drives. It's been about 5 years of, in some cases hard use. Not one problem.

Cons: Not super fast

Pros: Fast enough, quiet, reasonable price. As long as you initiate and format correctly there should be no problems. I bough two, both work great.

1 out of 5 eggsI got a bad one

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Died on me.
Had to pay to ship it back for RMA. Consider buying black because the 20 bucks more may be worth not having to take it back.

Other Thoughts: Also, I must have requested a refund rather than a replacement by accident. Still, the refund has not shown up in my account yet. I think I will try to buy notebook drives in the future for more data reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat media drive

Pros: It's perfect for backup and media storage. Don't use this for your system drive. Go with a Caviar Black or even one of the Raptor drives for that purpose. The large block transfer speeds are very good for a "green" drive. I've very pleased.

Also I keep this in an external dock and the temps are very low.

Cons: I could talk about access speed but that would be stupid since this is, once again, a "green" HDD that's supposed to serve as bulk storage.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive, good value

Pros: 1 gb capacity for the price I paid; quiet drive

Cons: Access is not as fast as the WD Black version, but then again they are different specs; nothing else to report so far

Other Thoughts: I am very pleased with the drive so far. The performance is good, the price was good, the delivery from Newegg was great and this drive conserves a little power, too. I use this drive in an external USB enclosure as an additional backup for my Macbook and I'm pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Had this drive running for over a year now. Still working great, never had a problem. Its quiet too.

Cons: Can't think of any. Some say the drive isn't the fastest, but who uses a 1TB drive for runnong an OS on? That would be a waste, even if you partition it. This drive is for storage. And for the price, you can't go wrong.

Other Thoughts: Great drive, great price.

1 out of 5 eggsThe drive I have is a steaming dogpile.

Pros: not as expensive?
you get to buy a new drive or ask WD for an RMA so you can take an unnecessary trip to the postal office and pay for postage?

Cons: While being used on a MacBook Pro with two eSATA docs, this drive and another 1TB volume, I was copying 60GB+ of data with no other processes running only to watch the estimated time to completion INCREASE incrementally every 10 or so seconds. I then try to eject the drive from the HDD toaster only to have to wait five or more minutes listening to it grind away at who knows what?

I thought it might be the fact that I'm using a non-native NTFS driver with this volume so I do a chkdsk on a Winders box only to have it take many HOURS just to scan it.

I figure this thing is probably broke so I contacted WD for an RMA but I have low expectations that the replacement will fare any better.

Other Thoughts: Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues in WIn 7

Pros: I have been using the drive for 8 months now in a HTPC that is up and running 24/7. I typically have BitTorrent, Boxee, or other apps constantly running. I have had no issues with this drive. Runs real quite, and real cool. Perfect for a HTPC.

Cons: None so far for me. Just understand going into it that this drive is not meant for a RAID setup.

Other Thoughts: Picked up one of the new 1TB Caviar Greens with the 64mb Cache today.

3 out of 5 eggsNot suitable for NAS, RAID

Pros: Saves power in two ways: it goes to idle state very quickly, and your NAS/RAID system will probably power it off immediately after that, since that behavior looks like a drive failure to the system.

Cons: This drive is tuned to park the heads and idle out after about 8 seconds of inactivity. That saves power, but may also cause the drive to appear defective to NAS and RAID systems that expect the drives to be continuously responsive.

I've also found a few of these drives have different firmware revisions, but there's no firmware update tool on WD's web site at this writing. Who knows what might be fixed or broken between the versions?

Other Thoughts: Western Digital is uncooperative when it comes to helping techs figure out how to make adjustments to this drive. Next time I try to save a few bucks by going green, I won't consider Western Digital's offerings.

There are also different submodels of the WD10EADS -- be sure you know which one you're getting, and check it against the compatibility charts for your device! I'm using an LG N4B1, and only specific submodels of this drive will work in it. Thanks, WD.

NewEgg's RMA has been awesome, though. Gotta give props where they're due.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat in RAID

Pros: Running four of these in RAID 5 in an Intel SS4200-E NAS device. I've heard they have RAID problems, but I haven't seen any yet. I chose these because Intel includes them on the tested hardware list for the SS4200.
Good price for a good drive.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I've become used to poorly packaged Bare Drives from Newegg, but I was pleasantly surprised to receive these in a bulk HDD mailer package with plenty of filling. Looks like Newegg may be stepping up their packaging department.

5 out of 5 eggsBest gb/dollar

Pros: I bought this drive for my first from-scratch PC build, which I intended to be a gaming PC plus an HTPC for my music and movies. Needless to say I wanted to get the largest amount of storage possible, and this drive did not disappoint. Don't worry about slow read/write speeds either, I've noticed absolutely no difference in speeds from my old 7200rpm drive. Having never used a VelociRaptor, I can't comment on its speed compared to 10,000 RPM, but it's a terabyte for 80 dollars! Come on!

Cons: No cons just yet, knock on wood.

Other Thoughts: I had a slight scare when the mailman slipped on the ice on my doorstep and dropped the box, but the bubble wrap and packaging peanuts did their job.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hard drive

Pros: Low power, low heat, and reasonably good throughput.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Used this drive in some servers around the office that didn't require raid to reduce energy consumption and heat. If your drive is not accessed all of the time, meet as well have it saving energy.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: 2 of these drives reliably in continuous service since August 2009. Fast shipping with accurate online order tracking.

Compared to prevoius drives used, these are extremely quiet and produce less heat.

Upgraded 2 home media center system drives. Downloaded the free Acronis True Image WD Edition from WD support site to prepare and manage the drives. Partitioned, formatted and transferred both drives with minimum time and effort. Transferred Windows Vista Media Center OEM version from HP, including HP system restore partition, plus dual boot Ubuntu Linux.

Family frequently uses these drives to store, backup and access music, photos, video and documents from multiple PCs and operating systems.

Cons: OEM drives were bubble wrapped in styrofoam trays cut from the larger OEM tray, then packed in styrofoam peanuts. Safely dissipated static electricity on anti-static bench pad after removing from styrofoam peanuts. Drive diagnostics before setup found no problems.

Pros: 1 TB
Its the green edition, so I saved 1 watt per year, which helps prevent global warming

Cons: Slow
Didn't even last 1 year. Croaked.

Other Thoughts: Newegg shipped the next day, I received drive 3 days later, I live in Alaska, maybe some of you have heard of it? Thats MAJOR fast for up here. Thanks Newegg!

Pros: Runs cool. I use it in my server to store all my movies. Have 5 of these drives and not had one problem.

Cons: None for me.

Other Thoughts: These drives will be around for a long time. The capacity for the dollar makes them a real deal. Solid state drives are to small and still have a lot of issues.

Pros: Very quiet drive. Got three of them in a RAID-5 setup. Don't really see a loss of performance in Photoshop, Nero or other apps I run. WD has always seemed like a smart choice and I'm glad I made it this time.

Cons: None. Love these drives.

Other Thoughts: Like I said, VERY quiet.

Pros: Great capacity, quiet & cool (I now own 5 of these drives).

Cons: Not the fastest drive, but it's green!

Other Thoughts: Purchased this drive as a spare drive for an existing drive RAID 5 setup consisting of 4 of these drives. Unfortunately, the WDTLER tool does not work on newer WD10EADS drives :(

Pros: Very, very. very fast data transfer... Proved perfect to store important data I did not want to lose on my computer. Runs quite as a mouse, cool and never any lag in loading, Perfect for the advanced computer user.

Cons: No problems except is you dont have extra sata cables you might want to purchase one for a extra if you need it.

Other Thoughts: Newegg you did it again...I have bought many items from you and so far the only problem I have ever had was with one delivery....so It wasnt even your fault, BUT YOU FIXED IT...THANKS MILLIONS...I WILL ALWAYS LOOK TO NEWEGG FOR ALL MY COMPUTER NEEDS.

Pros: - High Capacity
- Purchased for $75 including shipping

Cons: - First 2 drives were DOA

Other Thoughts: - First drive wouldn't let the system POST (RMA via NewEgg)
- Second drive wouldn't initialize in Win 7 x64 (RMA via WD)
- Third drive worked like a charm, but I'm out $18 shipping & tons of time. What a waste!

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet, fast, but not as fast as I was hoping for

Pros: This drive gives me the capacity I wanted for a price I could live with. I bought this drive in conjunction with Windows 7 Home Premium, and this was my first Windows 7 install that wasn't the Release Candidate.

Cons: I was hoping to see my Windows Experience index go a little higher, as the hard drive speed was the only thing keeping back to a 5.9.

Pros: Well it was working great, it seemed to have faster transfer rates than some of my Caviar Blue drives.

Cons: After about two months the drive started failing so I started the RMA process, turns out I forgot to inclue one thing with the box so they are going to ship it back so I can fix it, buy a new label, then ship it back.

Other Thoughts: I have other WD drives that have worked for years but I know drive failures happen thats why Im only subtracting 1.
Pluss WD will let you return the drive within a year and if it hasnt gone bad by then I doubt it will.

3 out of 5 eggsWorking well, I think.

Pros: It's relatively quiet and usually responds quickly.

Cons: 1. Sometimes it gets a little lagged and programs take a while to open.
2. The computer it's installed in was rebooted after about 2 months of using this HDD. It immediately went into a reboot cycle from the XP Loading screen. After using safe mode to ensure no programs that shouldn't be running were running, I rebooted and it started working again. Later that day XP showed a BSOD that I had last time I my HDD was going bad. It's worked for about a week since then, but tomorrow I plan on /chkdsk on it to scan for bad sectors.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive for Storage

Pros: Great price for a 1 TB drive. Worked after formatting and arrived quickly.

Cons: Arrived in bubble wrap and shoved into a small box that had shipping tape around it. Must be part of buying the drives in bulk. Slow on start-up. Must have something to do with its low energy use.

Other Thoughts: Took four hours on my Vista PC to format. Be sure to use device manager to format this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsI remember when...

Pros: It spins and manipulates bits of data as tiny magnetic fields in the most spectacularly uninteresting fashion I can imagine.

Cons: It will eventually fail, I'll lose some data, swear a lot, and have to buy a new one.

Other Thoughts: I'm old enough to remember when mainframe supercomputers had sub-gigabyte drives, and they seemed infinite in their capacity. I've partitioned this one in half, Mint Linux on one, Windows 7 on the other. The two of them have their ups and downs, maybe an adventure or two, but at the end of the day, they still live side by side, like buddies.

5 out of 5 eggsSO Far So Good!

Pros: Very Quite and exactly what I needed for HTPC build.
I coupled this with a SSD drive for Vista 7 and so far all works great. Will soon be adding another drive to back fill the older less efficient drives as they will be replace four nosier 500G Drives.

Cons: Well do not know what happened but during transfer from older drives using Vista, I or it being Windows manage to damage two of my older drives before I could get all data off.
Luckily I had back up drives. I do not know if I could fault the new drive as failure mode is hard to determine.

Other Thoughts: Well with the above I will say WD has been great to me so far with the last two failed drives. seems windows related in both cases. In the above case I had a 640 GB blue drive and a Samsung Spin Point. Both will not stay on long enough to Re-format and futile to repair even with Samsung utility.
I put in for replacement on both companies web site and within three days I now have a new WD drive and have yet to even get a RMA number from Samsung! On line support is non availabe and will never buy from the again! GO WD or Seagate

1 out of 5 eggs***DOA*** and the return policy SUCKS!!!!

Pros: None

Cons: The hard drive was dead on arrival. What they don't tell you about their return policy is that the "30 days" is from the date of invoice to the date they physically receive the return. I ordered on the 28th but didn't receive it until the 5th. Then it took a week before I installed and realized it was broken. So don't mess around! the clock is on their side. NOT IMPRESSED!!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome value drive!

Pros: Whisper quiet, low power consumption.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This drive works exactly as advertised. I have 4 of these puppies (including one at the 1.5TB level) and they are wonderful.

I use them in 3 scenarios:
1) 2x1TB - HTPC - I can never hear them over the content. They are on and being accessed most of the time so the lower power consumption is great.
2) 1x1TB - Backup drive for my primary computer - It sits right on my desk, less than 2 feet from my ears and I can't hear it over the HVAC.
3) 1x1.5TB within a Drobo mixed with 3 Seagate Barracuda drives. The Barracuda might be slightly faster, but they are also very very noisy! The mixing of drive speeds had no noticeable impact on Drobo performance, but the Drobo is super slow to begin with.

4 out of 5 eggsSlow spinup

Pros: I like these drives, they're cheap, they hold a lot of information and they're quiet.. Bought two of these in July and they've been working pretty well since.

Cons: Not exactly performance class drives which doesn't bug me if I'm just storing information and not playing games off of them. But the one thing that does bug me is the spin up time of these drives. It takes about 7-10 seconds for the drive to spin up before the computer can use it. Which doesn't sound like a lot of time but when you're used to clicking through you're files to get to a movie or file and instantly getting results having to sit there for 10 seconds while the drive spins up is just plain annoying.

Other Thoughts: I bought these over the Western Digital Blacks mainly because of the price difference, but now I sort of regret it. Either way the drives perform as they should and they save power (if you care about that sort of thing).

5 out of 5 eggsNot Plug & Play Ready

Pros: The drive comes with 937 gigs of useable space, which was lower than I anticipated. The drive also has no partition on it so when I plugged it into an external case it wouldn't pop up in My Computer. If you are having trouble with this go into disc management and find the drive. Right click the drive and choose properties then give it a partition. It's 1tb so it takes quite a while!

Cons: Didn't come ready out of the box, no use-able partition.

Other Thoughts: Saved me 10-20 bucks to get another Terabyte drive and just put it in a previous external case. Discouraging to have to fight it quite this much out of the box but love Western Digital so I put up with it.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive for what it is

Pros: Good drive, no issues, does what it is supposed to;

Cons: none in and of itself. Price has gone down 20$ since I bought it a the Egg but that is understandable as time passes...

Other Thoughts: I di dnot realize this was not a 7200 rpm drive atthe time I hastily got it when my main drive died. And, so, I isntalled it as my new main drive. Not that bad, but did notice machine a bit slower...sometimes...and sometimes it seems just fine. Hiccups when playing CD's etc...some say this is 5400 rpm all the time, others say it is 5400 mostly but can rev up to 7200 when load demands it..which is it?

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great in my WHS

Pros: Works fine in my HP 485 series Windows Home Server. Got recognized and set up with no problems. Always runs 4 degrees cooler than a Seagate drive that also sits in my WHS.

Cons: None. I hope it does not crash and take 1 GB of my precious data with it?

Other Thoughts: I already have 300 Gigs of data on this drive. Appears to work as advertised. This is a "green" drive, so in theory it does not have the performance of faster spinning HD. In my setup, I dont care. This HD sits in a server that is used to store backup files and bunch of media files. I bought this WD drive because find those HD fairly reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Paid for the cheap shipping disregarding other reviews and my HDD arrived in perfect working condition. Great for storing collections of files. For the price, it's hard to beat.

Cons: it is just slower than most drives, but for green, it is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital has been more reliable and dependable than other brand HDD, which is nice to know that even with FedEX brutal shipping, this made it safely to it's new owner.

5 out of 5 eggsFor those who can't figure out how to format it

Pros: Quiet, inexpensive, huge capacity. Great for media storage.

Cons: It doesn't do my laundry for me? Seriously, it might not have the high speeds that serious gamers are looking for but for media storage, the Sims and Diablo these are fine.

Other Thoughts: For those of you who can't figure out why Windows won't see the drive after it's been plugged in or have issues using the format option thru explorer you need to use DiskManagement. It's very easy.
Right click on My Computer then click on Manage. In the left pane select Disk Management. This will show you every drive connected to your computer whether or not Windows Explorer can see it. New drives typically need to be initialized and then formatted which can be done by right-clicking the drive you want to work on. I've setup all 4 of my WD Greens, and almost a dozen other SATA and PATA HDDs of various capacities this way and never had a problem with them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives

Pros: Quiet, high transfer rates, cheap, reliable.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these drives at the same time, for use in a removable drive tray attached to SATA controller that supports hot swapping. I've seen sustained transfer rates over 85MB/sec, copying large files over a network, which is impressive, for the price. So far they've been reliable, though of course there's no telling how long they'll last. I plan to buy a few more over the next few months.

1 out of 5 eggsWouldn't Format

Pros: NewEgg's Customer Reviews, Pricing, Shipping, and Return Policies and it's PayPal payment option that uses the PayPal shipping address.

Cons: NewEgg's automated packaging ........ While the drive was tightly wrapped in bubble wrap, it wasn't surrounded on all sides by the additional packaging Styrofoam "popcorn" chips for further protection on all sides. I would like to know the value of the negative cost / benefit from avoidable damages incurred from rough handling by the couriers.

Otherwise, the Drive failed to NTFS format in two attempts, first with Partition Manager, and then secondly with Windows XP Disk Management.

Other Thoughts: I now will have a lot less frustration paying NewEgg by PayPal rather than directly by credit card, which always has been a major (Catch 22) hassle regarding NewEgg's shipping address restrictions.

Cons: I plug it into the computer and for some reason windows cannot see it. The drive spins up, drivers install, and all that good stuff. But for some reason the drive is just not anywhere to be found.

So i shut the computer back down and start up BIOS and see that BIOS notices the drive. So i boot windows back up, same deal cant find the drive. (windows vista)

I switched SATA ports on my motherboard. That didn't do anything. So i figure maybe both my two unused SATA ports are broken. So i then proceed to plug it into my USB - HD connector, flip the swtich, drive spins up. Windows makes the little sound that notices a USB device is plugged into it and nothing else happens. Drive still can not be found.

Maybe i'm doing something wrong, i cant find any place to even format this drive in my BIOS.

Other Thoughts: I bought this HD to replace my SEAGATE 500gb. I was always against WD and perfected Seagate. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to follow peer pressure of friends.

So hopefully i can diagnose this problem more and my first WD purchase won't be my last.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Drive

Pros: Great drive for the price. No problems at all. WD hasn't let me down. I only buy their drives. I use it as a storage drive for my digital images.

Cons: somewhat slow in the begining. I didnt think i'd notice the difference between 7,200 and 5,400, but i did notice.

Being that this is a storage drive and not a main drive it's not that big of a deal.

Other Thoughts: I am running this sata drive via PCI adapter

3 out of 5 eggsReplacement Drive

Pros: Inexpensive and large storage.

Cons: Replacing same drive that died on me. It has been reported that these drives are too aggressive in parking heads to save power/lower noise. In turn, reduced overall lifetime of the drive. Used wdidle3 tool to disable feature.

Other Thoughts: Purchased first WD10EADS from ZZF. It started dying on me after 6 months of use in a Tivo HD. There was some picture freezing and random reboots. Signs that hard drive was dying. Confirmed read errors when tested with WD tools. Luckily, old drive was still under limited warranty. Shipped back to WD for replacement. Also, was able to backup Tivo settings from bad drive and restore to new drive. Lost a couple of recorded programs, but no settings, season passes, etc. Tivo community recommends different WD model for Tivos now. Purchased this replacement before learning about that. However, this new drive still works/boots in Tivo HD. No issues so far.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Low power consumption, good price vs capacity point, reliable so far (6+ months).

Cons: Slower than some other disks, but the focus for these drives is on low energy consumption not maximum performance.

Other Thoughts: I have 6 of these in a ZFS pool, no failures so far. They are a touch slow to start up but as I don't restart the system often that isn't an issue. By my calculations I save the cost of a single drive each year in energy vs Caviar Black drives.

1 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: ....lots of space?

Cons: Slow, this thing takes forever to find anything. My last Hard Drive was a WD raptor 36 gig and I am still thinking of going back to my old one. If you want a slow computer this is the drive for you.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this thing, spend a little more and go with a real 7200rpm if you cant get the 10k rpm

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect balance of Power and Performance.

Pros: Huge space to store data. These kind of hard drives are perfect for NAS/External Storage devices, as they balance both power and performance. I am using it for more than 3 months in my NAS and no problem. Runs quite and cool. Newegg packed hard drive properly.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have got two of these and very happy with my purchase. If you are looking hard drives for external drive and this is perfect drive as it can save lot of power and also runs cooler than other hard drives. Running in RAID-1 mode.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very quiet, energy efficient, and more than fast enough for my MythTV backend. I've been running this drive 24/7 for about a year and have not had a problem. Since the price has come down so much in recent months, I bought a second drive to back up the first one, just in case.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is a great drive at a great price. It may not be fast enough for your fancy gaming rig, but it's great for media servers or just general use.

3 out of 5 eggsNoisy little bugger

Pros: It works and does everything it's supposed to. (for a hard drive used in a Drobo, there really isn't much to examine from a qualitative point of view.)

Cons: Loud! This drive rattles at a high pitch and can be heard across the room, even from inside a Drobo. The other [Western Digital] drives are silent in comparison. The odd thing is, it's not a constant noise, but rather cycles up and down every couple of seconds. Very odd and annoying.

Other Thoughts: It may just be this particular specimen, I have another that I've yet to install in my Drobo. (the process takes 40 hours, so I'll wait until the workweek starts again.)

5 out of 5 eggsGood Value

Pros: Faster than my old PATA drive and cheap.
Runs extremely quiet and low power usage.
Has no problem with backing my dvd's up.

Cons: Not really a con, but it does take almost 4 hours to format.

Other Thoughts: Best value for the money.
First one I got was DOA, sent it to newegg and they paid for the return shipping cause they're amazing.
Second one's been fine ever since.

5 out of 5 eggs8 / 8, no bad sectors, no problems

Pros: QUIET, low temp, good for RAIDs, fast enough, great price at present (dec '09)

Cons: Not the fastest

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 of these last year, did a surface scan on them and started using them. No problems.

I bought another 4 a few months ago and those too had no problems.

Some people will invariably have bad luck, but not me apparently.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: These drives run quiet and cool. Good amount of storage for the price. I have seven of these and haven't had one fail.

Cons: Good storage drive however they are a little slow for an operating system.

Other Thoughts: I own seven of these drives already and just ordered four more, I've yet to have a problem with any of the drives I own and definitely recommend them.

5 out of 5 eggswestern digital

Pros: High capacity and runs very cool.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have used many drives from many companies and western digital is the drive for me. I have used western digital for over 15 years and have only had one fail me. It was my first drive that broke the 1 GB barrier, and it was because I dropped it.

1 out of 5 eggsbad Drive

Pros: Low price

Cons: note: i gave it one egg because it has a low price which is good but i bought this drive in advance for someone as a present but due to 30 day replacement policy got stuck with a dud. They are poorly packaged when being shipped and have faulty core workings. My friend also got one which had to be replaced twice before they sent him one that actually worked and he got stuck with restocking fees both times. not worth the trouble. If you can I suggest buying from a local store when dealing with hard drives. I have built over 100 computers and always buy local until i saw the great deal they had and chose to try ordering this way. The only time i didn't buy local and i got a $85.00 paper weight piece of junk that they wont replace.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking well for me for over a year...

Pros: They do use less electricity than normal drives - saves a few greenbacks especially if youre running 5 like me.
Tested with a Kill-A-Watt meter from Newegg.
NOT SLOW. Period. These drives are smart. They use 5400 spindle speeds when demand isn't on them and 7200 with a work load. I did not buy them for speed. Great for 24/7 operation. I think I love mine.

Cons: Not really any if you know what youre buying here--an energy conserving drive. Please believe me when I declare these drives as dependable as any other Western Digital drive. Near all drive failures are improper handling and operation or age and some damage may not become evident until later. It happens with all manufacturers. If you can't face the RMA I recommend you buy your drives elsewhere (and several online stores pack and ship very carefully) until Newegg begins to handle and pack their OEM drives. That said, I have never had a bad drive from Newegg in many many purchases since 2001. The Seagate series 11 drives (x3) all failed on me due to bad firmware but that's it.

Other Thoughts: I run mine in RAID 5 for a 24/7 file server at home. I'd only recommend these for storage drives or HTPC setups. You could certainly see better performance for a web browsing only type home computer but they would be fine for that also I suppose. They are not really fast but they are not slow, not slow at all, and you could say maybe a pinch slower than an average mainstream speedy drive.

3 out of 5 eggsOk drive

Pros: Solid 3 eggs, but sector issues with one drive broke an egg.

Big drive, small price. Not unsatisfied with performance. I ordered two of these one in March & the other in April '09. I am mixed on trusting them so far.

I had one drive just disappear from Windows explorer and when I investigated, it was the second 1TB that had bad sectors. Why the good drive was affected, I don't know.

I offloaded the drive contents, scanned with Seagate's SeaTools and found bad sectors. I downloaded Western Digital's Windows and DOS tools. Ran the windows version and then created a boot usb drive and ran the DOS version.

Unlike mfg tools of before, Western Digital's DOS repair was still picking up the bad sectors after a repair. Used to be a mfg low level scan updated the drive sector table and took the bad sectors out of service. If you reran the tool, the former bad sectors would not still be reported as bad. So I don't know. The windows tool still reports the sectors as bad.

Cons: Download at least the windows version of Western Digital's tools and run it weekly to check your drive. You could use a hard drive monitor, but these typically only monitor the SMART status. I never got any warnings from SMART. Expected since a sector issue.

I don't put anything I really value on these drives since it is hard to backup a TB or a few in my case.

Other Thoughts: If you can get them for <$85, worth it. Otherwise, I'd wait or maybe get the intro Seagate.
