5 out of 5 eggsWDC is best, period.

Pros: When buying a WDC HD, only, let me repeat again: ONLY buy the Black Label Caviars. Why? Read on...

My 1st HD was a 32Meg Seagate, circa 1989. 3 years later it started clicking, going bad, then kaput. 2nd was a Mitsi 64Meg. Not bad, no probelms. 3rd drive was a WDC 240mg, around 1994. Then the WD-850mg, 2850's, around 1996 or so. Fast forward to 2000, the WD-40GB. Then in 2002, the WD800JB, 80GB. Perhaps, for recent times and use, the 800JB is WDC's best drive ever. I have 5 of them. (Put your O/S on it). That 1st one in 2002, is still in use today in various systems, as well as others. I call them tiger drives. Fast, quiet, reliable...All of these drives had one thing in common: BLACK LABEL, Caviar. Look for that black label...

So, when it came recently for some more capacity, etc., I turned to the WD6401AALS, ---Caviar black label of course. I have 2 of these drives from Newegg.

They are like my "tigers", the 800JB's. Blazing, quiet, reliable. The 640's run 24/7/365, with the exception when one needs to do some housekeeping every 3 months or so dusting out the internals of one's case. As soon as that's done, power on and run 'em.

I'm looking at WDC's newer lineup, as the 640 is gone. Before I get another Caviar, Black label, will make sure on a pre-sale with WDC. Always do that before buying. That's called homework.

At any rate, Caviar+Black Label= great.

P.S>. I have never gone back to Seagate, except for a Maxtor DiamondMax 30GB, 7200 rpm in 1999. Everybody was out of WDC drives in that capacity, therefore the Maxtor. That Maxtor was worse than junk, 3 replacements and it still doesn't work. Makes a nice paperweight though! Who bought out Maxtor later? Seagate. 1+1=0

I have never had a WDC HD fail, ever. Needless to say, use 2 external 1TB WDC-Element for backups, etc., Their passport series, 500GB, 1TB. Excellent.

What's incredible about WDC HD is that the now 20 yr. old 240MG still works if put in a system. It's tucked away in a box, gently wrapped and sleeping quietly. When it comes to HD, the "Western Dog", as it was called in the early years, barks pretty darn good.

Cons: For this glowing review of WDC, I get a complementary "BETA TEST" free drive? Nick, nick..:)

Other Thoughts: I need a vacation...South Pacific will do. For a month!

p.s. Any spelling errors, forward to Webster's. Bye for now.

5 out of 5 eggsOct 2009

Pros: Runs great in RAID 0, quick and reliable. Almost 4 years with no issues, with some video/image editing, gaming, design programs, etc. Double storage as RAID 0 (1.16 Tb reported.) Quiet: can't hear them run over the CPU/chassis/GPU etc fans.

Cons: Not as fast as an SSD, or newer drives with SATA 6. Windows Experience reports a low 5.9 for some reason, but is still quick.

Other Thoughts: I bought these in October of 2009 and have been running them in RAID 0 from the start. No issues, and quick, though now SSD drives blow these out of the water. But I have 1.2 Tb for about $160 and it's plenty fast enough for my needs (gaming mostly.)

Anyone reading this now would probably be researching other WD drives for reliability, and WD Black drives are some of the best drives available. I highly recommend WD Black drives for daily use. An SSD would be better for even faster speeds, but limited space.

One tip: set power settings to keep the drives running in RAID mode, as a write attempt to a mis-matched array can corrupt a file. Under Hard disk/Turn off hard disk after/ select never. Also, always run a backup! RAID 0 is not fault tolerant and while faster than some drives, it can fail. Nice thing is after you upgrade to an SSD or other drive, two drives can be used as RAID 1 units, great for storage with redundancy to run their life cycle out. It's a good investment to go with the Black WDs, which tend to be designed for server applications.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable Drive

Pros: Simply Works

Cons: Price I suppose

Other Thoughts: I've been using the hard drive for the past 2 years and it is still kicking! Rather quiet and decent speed. Will definitely be buying western digital products again.
