4 out of 5 eggsGood hard drive

Pros: Performs as well as any platter hard drive can.

Cons: Failed after four and a half years, but Western Digital honored the 5 year warranty without fuss.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this hard drive to others looking for decent HDD performance on a budget.

5 out of 5 eggs8 years strong

Pros: Unbelievable reliability from consumer drive. I've been running these over several different raid arrays for 8 years. Still only lost one ever. Probably going to replace soon though because they are EIGHT YEARS OLD!

Cons: Price for the size and speed are a little lacking. Especially amongst the newest drives. This thing hasn't changed in 8 years and is still over $100.

Other Thoughts: I think they still make these due to legendary reliability for a consumer drive. Unless you want HGST or something even better, can't beat these things.

4 out of 5 eggsWorked great until failed.

Pros: Fast, long warranty.

Cons: Failed. Warranty department replaced it with a wrong model.

Other Thoughts: I bought this HDD over 5 years ago to use in my HTPC. I used it 24/7 mostly as a DVR and to watch online streaming content. So every day it would save several gigabytes of data. The harddrive ran great for 4 years and 11 month. I guess "luckily" for me it decided to fail during the last month of the warranty. However it failed quite badly, and I almost lost Gigabytes of personal pictures I did not backed up. Checkdisk would fail 30 seconds into the scan. However commercial data recovery software running for several days recovered all of my important files. So I thought it was a fluke, formatted the drive and re-installed the OS and software. But after a week or two it failed again with the same symptoms on the same sector.
At this time I was past the warranty period. I must say the WD service representative was very helpful with RMA, told me not to worry about several days of lapsed warranty, and even did not ask for any purchase receipts. However slightly disappointing was warranty service department, which sent me 2.5 inch Caviar Black drive, which is a bit slower than 3.5 inch drive. I'm sure they would sent me the right drive next time if I would contact them, but by the time I got the drive, I put in an SSD into my HTPC and used the 2.5 drive in my kid's laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsBought September 2010

Pros: Bought this drive to replace a tiny 150 GB WD drive September 2010 (yes 2010) and it has worked fantastic and is still going strong with daily use (averaging 6 hrs up per day). No problems installing OS to it. Highly recommend it.

Cons: None

Cons: One was bad.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these in 2010. One went out less than a month later. The other is still in use.

4 out of 5 eggsWorth The Money

Pros: Worked great, reliable for a desktop running nearly 24/7 and then packed in a closet for 2 years and then running 24/7 for another year. Ran Windows Vista 64-bit and then Windows 7 64-bit. Quiet.

Cons: No complaints really. Just annoyed. I bout a WD Black for the 5 year warranty and ability to run 24/7 with that warranty attached. i have had OEM hard drives and other cheap hard drives last 6-10 years with no issues. This one just started throwing bad sectors which happen to interfere with my OS since it is on that disc about a week ago. Windows tried to fix the bad sectors, but I am still getting very sluggish performance before the day is over. A restart tempoaririly fixes the issue until I have performed enough actions to traverse the bad the sectors.

******* Here's the Catch********
I bought this driver on 1/9/10. Today is 1/2/15. My drive just failed at exactly 5 years. I will call but doubt WD will uphold my 5 year warranty. I will argue that their 3 year warranty drives have always outlasted 5 years. Hope they listen to an upset customer.
