Very satisfied with this drive.
- Pros: Perfect complement to the 37 GB Raptor I use up front for my Windows XP 32-bit system drive (C: D: E:).
Caviar Black holds my paging drive and data archives (F: G: H:).
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: Used HD Tune to test Caviar Black against my Raptor.
Raptor Avg. Transfer Rate: 72.1 MB/Sec Access Time: 8.1 ms Burst Rate: 115.3 MB/Sec Operating Temp: 107 degrees F
Caviar Black Avg. Transfer Rate: 72.7 MB/Sec Access Time: 12.5 ms Burst Rate: 146.8 MB/Sec Operating Temp: 87 degrees F
OK Drive if it works
- Pros: Better than average speed at 70-75MB/s average read (HDtune), reasonable price
- Cons: First one died the first day, second one was flaky (had problems creating and modifying partitions, had to use Windows OS disk to create a partition) and much slower than anticipated.
- Other Thoughts: The first drive I received was not DOA, but died in the first hour of use. System would not boot with drive connected after that, so RMA. The second one worked, but I had allot of trouble setting up partitions and had to use the Windows OS installation CD to delete a partition and create a new one. After that, I got 70-75MB/s read from HDtune, which is allot less than some testing I have seen from the WD Caviar Black series, which are supposed to be some of the fastest 7200 RPM drives out there. The 500GB version does not appear to live up to the performance seen in the 640 and 1TB versions., which have been reviewed and tested a great deal.
I am returning the drive for the 640GB version, which may have a more efficient platter design and I hope to be seeing some of those 95MB/s average read speeds I have been reading about. If the 640GB version does not live up, it may be time to find another brand.

Awesome Hard Drive!
- Pros: Awesome drive, runs cool and quiet. no problems so far. great size for the price!
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: Vista had a hard time finding the drive, although that is an OS problem. A simple Google search remedied the problem
Vibrates like a mother
- Pros: Seems rocket fast. Win7 loads lickety split.
- Cons: The first time I turned on this new build I heard a horrid buzzing sound. Turned out to be this drive vibrating the case. This box has six fans and I can hear the drive vibrating over all of them.
- Other Thoughts: I should have stuck to my better judgment and stayed with Seagate.
Good So Far
- Pros: I have 3 of these. Two in my WHS. Easy to install. No issues so far.
Fast!
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: Does what a HD sould do.
