Don't confuse with older G models
- Pros: Works right away without software just able to map network drives in Windows. Does not need Mionet software. Supports DLNA to stream to consoles like PS3 and Xbox 360, also supports FTP, CIFS, NFS, AFP. You can create private shares with username and password protection. Uses Twonky for DLNA. Also has server for iTunes and iTunes found it right away. I think some other reviewers on here got older model with blue light, this new one has white light. Has a download manager that can even download with username and password so you don't have to leave your PC on for those +1GB demos. Also allows you to add additional USB storage. Has power button so you can turn the thing off and on for energy savings.
- Cons: web interface is not speedy but how many times will you use it? Cannot upgrade the drive.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure you upgrade the firmware. I had the firmware ending in .10 and it totally broke the edit/delete permissions on most files and folder on my public drive and also support was trying, they never figured it out. Only after another firmware update did it get resolved.
Forget the Mionet/ WD anywhere software, just download synctoy 2.0 from MS and use that, awesome app if you want to backup to this drive.
As Storage Drive It makes a Great Door Stop
- Pros: The concept is good 1 TB of storage I can access from anywhere on my network or from anywhere in the world.
- Cons: This drive comes with a software called MioNet at it is full of more bugs than a cheap hotel. It takes forever to start and slows down your whole computer. I have 3 computers on my network one is a very high end Vista 64 system they don't make a 64 bit version of the MioNet software. I can read files from it without MioNet but can't write anything to it which makes it pretty much usless. Also if you want to access this thing remotely get your wallet out because MioNet will cost you.
- Other Thoughts: If there was a better way communicate with it, it would probably be a nice drive. I am pretty disappointed with WD on this one no response from tech support basically a $200.00 door stop.

N/A
- Pros: I purchased the 2 TB version of this drive also sold by Newegg. I wanted a NAS drive to do provide another backup location away from all my home office PC's. I had external USB backup drives on all my PC and Mac, but if I had an office fire I would have lost everything. Wanted to place it in my basement workshop on the far end of the house.
I had investigated Carbonite and other services, but did not like the PC/seat price/month plus some of the services don't allow back-up of external USB drives.
The $260 I paid was a great price for a 2 TB drive with NAS.
I had this up and running on the PC's in minutes. Western Digital supplied an install disk that network maps the drive on the pc's.
The MAC did not see the network drive. Western Digital on their site offered a firmware update which said was now compatible with the Macs Time Machine backup. Installed the firmware update, and the MAC and Time Machine now saw the drive.
Recommend if you have both PC and Mac platforms.
- Cons: Small plastic case that looks like it is well vented. Runs cools.
I have had a high failure rate of external HDs that were in metal enclosures not cooled by fans. The last USB drive/enclosure I bought incorporated a fan, plus the drive was a low energy consumption. Heat are the silent killers of these drives. I hope this drive/enclosure does well.
Easy to setup and configure
- Pros: This is extremely easy to setup. I admit I was hesitant, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, but it was extremely easy to setup. It shows up right in the network, and starts out with 3 shares of "Configuration," "Public," and "Download." Once it was all setup, it created a share with a custom name that I chose where a user name and password are needed to access. This is great to separate what files to share publicly and which ones to keep as private (so my roommates don't go through all my personal stuff).
So I have this directly connected to my router and am accessing it wirelessly. It seems like the transfer rates are similar to USB from what I can tell so far (1.6GB of movies in about the same amount of time).
- Cons: None so far. I've only had it for one day, and haven't run into any problems. I'd have to say I'm pretty satisfied.
- Other Thoughts: Even though the software comes saying it supports XP and Vista, 7 works (even 64 bit). This was something I was a little worried about, but it works flawlessly.
My $h!7Book -- World Edition
- Pros: 1TB = nice capacity (currently using ~55%).
You don't need to install Mionet, but I found it convenient a time or two to get something while away from home from the drive.
- Cons: 1. NAS enclosure (not the green WD SATA drive) lasted 51.5 weeks (52 week warranty).
2. In order to appeal to the warranty I'd have to just mail in the drive and kiss my data goodbye OR 3. hire one of those expensive data recovery guys 4. Decided to void my warranty by removing drive myself since that was sadly the most cost effective solution -- drive works fine, just not the NAS enclosure.
5. transfer speed was slow probably because of the ARM processor & not the hard drive platter speed (5400 rpm).
- Other Thoughts: Drive just started disappearing from the network while using it. I figure it was heat-related. I did have the thing dangling from a screw inside an old entertainment cabinet inside my computer room so all those surfaces were exposed to the air (hung vertically).
After telepathically telling WD to go jump in a virtual lake I threw it in my PC (which now has 2x320GB Seagate SATA drives in RAID 1 + 1TB storage:) ). Vista 64 didn't recognize the file system as expected. Downloaded and installed Ext2 Volume Manager from sourceforge, set its drive letter up (Z:) and file system type ("83 linux"). Mounts nicely now under Vista & all files are freely visible. I'll probably relocate it in the future to a homejob NAS of my own making (maybe use FreeNAS and set up a RAID1).
They should have included some sort of cooling device -- passive or active.
