4 out of 5 eggsDefinitly not an EMC/NetAPP

Pros: 1.8Tb usable Storage, DLNA to play video/photos/music to DLNA empowered network players (Samsung BD Player, LG LED Internet TV) SSH Shell w/ rsync available to mirror a USB Attached drive so you can Load the Drive. Uses TWonkyMedia for DLNA, auto set to scan for new content.

Cons: Embeded controller is sluggish, can become overworked and unresponsive with MIO and running a Torrent Download. Web UI could have used some pollishing, too many 'Web Service' ports open, Should have the ability to enable/disable services like any other Linux Based embeded platform (PFSense anyone?)

Other Thoughts: Will run a 'cracked' version that I can 'disable' some uneeded services on the NAS, will buy more as I migrate my DVD Library to DIVX and offer the instant play features of DLNA. Will have a Mirrored Backup as I have had other (Not this one) WD MyBook drives fail on me in the past, trust, but verify.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking fine so far

Pros: * Easy install
* Easy setup
* Seems to manage its power correctly

Cons: * Runs some odd services (MioNet for remote access) by default, but it can be disabled.
* Runs as an iTunes server by default and I didn't see a way to disable it.

Other Thoughts: Replaced a HP Media Vault that unexpectedly died with this model. All I cared for was FTP and SMB. I configured the box via its web interface to use the same file shares and same passwords, and it worked without issue with all computers (Win 7, Vista, Snow Leopard) -- did not even need configuration changes on any computer.

5 out of 5 eggsI guess I'm the lucky one

Pros: Very easy to setup, plug in a network, shows in Windows 7, Mac OS and PS3.
Speed isn't that bad, I regularly get 12 MB/s.
Very easy web interface, no need for the CD, updated the firmware in a couple of easy clicks.
Works pretty well with everything (time machine, DLNA, iTunes).

Cons: Clearly not 1000mbps interface, more like 100 mbps at the most.
Haven't figured out yet how to configure the unit in RAID1.
Bright LED depending on the location (although it's fun to watch as it moves all the time).

Other Thoughts: Haven't had the drive for a long time so I can't comment on reliability, right now seems to be running fairly cool.

I understand the frustration from owners that were expecting A LOT from this unit. For the price, you still get very good capacity and decent performance. You're not looking at an enterprise class drive but something that will satisfy the home user with its simplicity and capacity to work with a variety of devices and software. I was pleasantly surprised.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat for a while, then just stops working!

Pros: Good storage space, easy network interface, plug and play capability, nice and compact.

Cons: SLOW TRANSFER RATES (~2mbps average over draft -n network)

Suddenly stopped working.

WD technical assistance is almost impossible to reach in a timely manner.

Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for about a year now and it suddenly stopped working, conveniently after I just transferred a large amount of important data and media over to it for safe keeping.

When powered up, the drives spin up, but the unit itself does not power up. The blue rings do not light up and the network activity lights do not light up. The router however does light up as if it were connected. Its a very odd issue.

My unit is the older 1TB model, with dual 500GB drives linked in the unit. Dual Blue Ring model. Though if the drive has not been internally updated drastically, then this is an issue that may raise its head for you.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Very Happy with Drive

Pros: The service from NewEgg was outstanding.

Cons: The NAS drive was undependable in my home environment, I had to reinstall it way too many times.

Other Thoughts: For my purposes a few USB external hard drives would be better.
