5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: I bought this to hook up to a Dish Network VIP211 receiver to give it DVR ability. Paid the access fee and went through the steps and worked the first time through. Playing back recorded high definition programs now is a snap and there is very little difference between the recording and the original broadcast. If you have been using a DVD recorder before to do this you will be very impressed.

Cons: I wish that when I turn off the satellite receiver that the blue light would go completely out on the drive instead of just stop blinking and the light still being on.

Other Thoughts: If you've been recording programs with a DVD recorder you know what a pain it is to set up a timer each and every time and check to make sure that the clock on the recorder matches the satellite receiver. This little box will end that headache when you just go to guide and select what you want to record. It's that simple.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes NOT work with TIVO

Pros: I'm sure it's a great thing if you need a USB based DVR expander. TIVO needs ESATA. My mistake for not checking closer before I bought

Cons: This device does not allow you to use the carpool lane and does not explain cold fusion.

Other Thoughts: It would have been helpful (to me) if it said in the ad: "not compatible with tivo", but mostly my fault for not researching.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect out of the box

Pros: Works perfectly.

Cons: Slow while receiving data from DVR.

Other Thoughts: I have a Dish 622 DVR and it works great! It's slow getting data from the DVR. I don't know if it's the fault of the DVR or the HD. When playing back from the drive there is no difference in speed. Wish I had this years ago.

1 out of 5 eggsSteer clear of these!

Pros: It works for a while...

Cons: They die in 12-18 months.

Other Thoughts: I bought one about 2 years ago. It worked fine with my Tivo for the first 10 months or so, then my Tivo started to reboot randomly. After weeks of troubleshooting, I tried unplugging the MyDVR Expander and the problems disappeared. I got it replaced under warranty. About 14 months later the replacement drive went bad and caused my Tivo to crash again. I pulled the second drive and the problems went away again. I would not buy another unless Western Digital ups the warranty to three years or more.

3 out of 5 eggsDVR Expander Still Not Dish Compatible

Pros: Easy to set up.

Cons: This DVR is not compatible with Dish Network. Beware, once you attach the device and it installs, very easily I might add, you then contact Dish to activate your DVR expander. It's an automated system to activate your device, but it still will not work with the Dish receiver. Dish Network is aware of this issue, your account will be charged for the activation, but to date no solution to the problem exists.

Other Thoughts: I would wait to purchase this item until Dish Network solves their issue. This is clearly a Dish Network problem.

5 out of 5 eggsWD DVR Expander

Pros: The drive is simple to hook up to the DVR 622. The 500GB WD drive runs cool and quiet.

Cons: Latest software update, 6.21, on the DVR 622 and 722 does NOT support the WD DVR Expander. USB device is recognized but when you go to use it with the Manage Devices menu, DVR states does not support this. The menu items (Transfer) etc. are all there but it cannot use the drive despite the Dishnetwork logo on the WD box. The Dishnetwork tech I had on chat already submitted this issue up the chain at Dish. I fully believe this to be a Dish issue and not a WD issue.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this product!

Pros: I bought this unit several months ago, and absolutely love it. I record sporting events in HD, so the 30 hours of HiDef space on my DVR wasn't nearly enough.

Very easy to set up; unit arrived with DISH instructions.
DISH remote and DVR menus work seemlessly with unit.
You can watch a show while moving content from the DVR to the unit.
Content can be moved from the hard drive back to the DVR, though I've never bothered. Watching content from the hard drive is easy.

Cons: None so far!

Other Thoughts: I'm getting a second one, so I can keep games on one and shows on the other.
