2 out of 5 eggsAbysmally Slow

Pros: Cheap price, easy install, wasn't DOA

Cons: Slower than snot on a frozen windshield. I bought this to save images of my main photo library (~490GB) from a 1T USB2 EHD. The image took 16 hours. The fastest speed I saw was ~80Mbps, the average was about 60Mbps. To compare, I created an image of my C drive (~280GB) to a Buffalo LinkStation. That took ~1'30". The same test to this WD took nearly 2'30"

Other Thoughts: I should have known better. I have a 500GB NetStation, circa 2005 and it's a dog as well. I hoped WD had learned how to design/implement a home desktop NAS by now but it seems they still don't have a clue.

4 out of 5 eggsNeeds work, but good start

Pros: This drive installs very easily and the software was simple. They even have a web browser for configuration, but it can be painfully slow at times.

This drive works great out of the box as it has most of the streaming stuff setup for media server access. I didn't have to do much before I was able to start moving things off my various computers and onto this NAS for storage of music, pictures, and video

Cons: The media server version that is currently available for this unit lacks support for x264/mkv formats. This was a pretty big eye sore as the latest available firmware still lacks the latest version of twonky media server. WD really should get around to upgrading this. This really makes it hard to use this for any current HD video files I have created

Other Thoughts: This twony server can be modded if you have the desire to get into the system as root. This will require you to download twony version 6.x and lose your license. You can always purchase another license, but this really should be necessary and WD should fix this

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Large capacity, Mirrored drives, Ethernet connectivity, External USB hook up for additional drives works well and my bluray player and other systems pick it up just fine, Media server works well. I am able to stream movies and music quite painlessly. Works well with my Xbox 360 for stream movies.

Cons: It's a bit slow. Had to refresh the firmware a few times. I did have to unplug it a couple times but so far its been running very smoothly.

Other Thoughts: I feel confident that this device will keep my data backups nice and secure. I use it to share my pics, documents, movies, and such among all my computers, bluray players, and other devices.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't listen to the terrible unrealistic reviews

Pros: Seriously I almost passed on this NAS because of all the terrible reviews. The software and firmware has matured. That is what you need to know. I understand what a gigabit connection SHOULD be, but this unit has a slow atom processor from what I have read, THAT is the bottleneck, keep in mind that this unit BARELY costs more than the two drives that come in the box!
The bad reviews are either old or from people expecting too much. WHO cares it takes most of one day to backup the first time??? It uses so little CPU (0 to 1%) that I could not tell the difference. This is not a business solution or for someone wanting to back up a ton of files on a regular basis! Get the right tool for the task and you will be much happier.

Cons: Ok, I will say it, its slow. SO WHAT! If you want a high speed server backup, THEN BUY A SERVER! the software although it has matured has some to be desired, the CD that came with my unit I could not see the tabs so I had to follow along with the PDF, Firmware upgrade made me originally think I needed a USB to USB male cord (You do not) Faster software (Premium is $49 LOL)

Other Thoughts: For home use this is a GREAT device!, PITA to get setup since I am backing up 2 macs and a PC. There is a bit of a learning curve for those that have never set these things up, but its well documented. You have to set a password to use time machine, after that it is automatic (You have to upgrade the firmware to use Lion too) The first backup takes a long time, the movement of iTunes takes a long time DEAL WITH IT, either that or spend a grand on a file server. You are barely paying more than for two terabyte drives, and you get backup software and a file server package all in one. It suits my needs and I dare say 99.999% of real users out there needs. After you get it set up it takes minutes to do unattended backups. Time machine does one every hour, the PC software appears to look for changes and backs them up immediately (I closed quicken and saw the files going to the backup unit, THAT IS EXACTLY what I have been looking for!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 3 other HDDs appear to be working OK.

Cons: One drive out of 4 dead on arrival. Got RMA from WD. Currently waiting on new HDD to arrive. I will have to rebuild RAID and reinstall VM Ware to take advantage of new drive space.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow And Steady Does NOT Win The Race

Pros: -Looks cool
-Small footprint
-Intuitive Web GUI for what it is
-Packaged well...?

Cons: -Slowest NAS I have ever used
-You have to hack the drive in order to customize the built-in Shares
-Pricey for what you get

Other Thoughts: I bought this NAS with the intent of streaming video and music to my WD TV Live Hub over my Wireless-N network. Instead, I just issued myself an RMA number as this sucker is going back.

Even with the drive configured in RAID 0 (Striped), streaming was extremely choppy/unstable, over Wireless-N & Ethernet. Connected via Cat6 Ethernet cable, the transfer speeds never topped 15.5MB/s even though Western Digital is all hot and bothered over the Gigabit Ethernet they supposedly have on this thing.

Overall, I am sad to say that I am not very impressed with this drive. As I said, I am returning it and will either build my own NAS or buy a smaller drive for simply backing data up and not streaming anything.

If you are looking for a drive to stream media, based off my experience, I would not purchase this one (or any of the My Book World Edition variations, as they are all the same).

If you are looking for a drive to simply backup your data - this drive will work just fine for

3 out of 5 eggsDo research before buying this NAS

Pros: Large storage - 1.8GB actual when running raid in mirrored mode.
Streaming - Built in Twonky server streams HD videos to my WDTV with no issues.
Looks good - reminds me of Mac stuff

Cons: Speed - Network transfer speed is slow at an average of 8MB/s. Enough for streaming, however you will be waiting a while when coping all your movies and such to the drive. Speed for this unit is not dependant on the connection 10/100/1000Mbps, the unit speed is limited by its CPU.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame Western Digital doesn't list actual transfer speeds anywhere.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a backup device

Pros: 4TB space, worked OK when it worked. Short term seems like good device. Longer term and I think you are playing Russian roulette with your data.

Cons: Overheats if you don't keep the "HDD Standby" set. If it is set, the unit sleeps in ~15 min. If you are working in say Word, and try to save/autosave you have to wait for the MyBook to wake again before Word will respond.

If running RAID1 and one of the HHDs fail, the unit becomes unusable. It runs in "degraded" mode which you would think would just be a little slower. No, try 300KB/sec. Then when I tried to copy larger files (family video) O got the error "Invalid File Handle" so good luck getting the data off the remaining working drive.

See the reviews of the HDD the MyBook uses (WD20EADS). They show they are failing often so aren't suitable for a backup device.

MyBook uses an uncommon Linux file system. You can't read the HDDs in Windows or Mac OS. Again good luck making a backup in case of problems.

There are more "Cons" but I don't have the space. See "Other thoughts".

Last remark here: This is the worst backup device I can imagine.

Other Thoughts: If a drive goes bad (probably will) then you will have to replace a HDD. According to WD customer service, this can take 48 hours to rebuild. During this time the unit is unusable.

I was asked send the serial numbers of both HDDS. You have to remove them from the MyBook to see that. After I had send the serial numbers I received this from cust. service:

"If you remove drive A, it will clear all of the RAID data inside your unit and leave you with no way of recovering your data "

I have a degree in Computer Science and another in Electronic Engineering and have troubleshot electronic devices before. The customer service people I dealt with have little/no technical knowledge.

Customer service wasn't able to answer simple questions. I was told to replace my B drive. I asked how they knew it was faulty. No reply. I asked 4 more times. No reply. Just replace it. Based on what?

There are STILL more "Cons" but I don't have the space.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: It's a great drive, easy to use and log into. And 4TB is a lot of storage if you have tons of movies, music, and photos that you want to share on your network with every computer, PS3 or XBOX360. Streams movies very well, I can stream my movies to my Apple TV, iMac, and my PS3 and it all works fine.

Cons: The only issue I see is when you first have to transfer all you movie and music fines to the drive over the network, I have about 2TB of info and it took me about 25-30 hours to complete.

Other Thoughts: It's worth the wait even if it takes that long...very happy a day later :)
