Western Digital is STILL Best
- Pros: Fast, quiet, large drive with plenty of speed and durability.
- Cons: None I can think of.
- Other Thoughts: Big leap over my Hitachi DeathStar that fried its own I/O board, yet had no indication of any damage... :(
RAID to Go
- Pros: Excellent choice to RAID applications. Drives are sturdy and carry a high INITIAL OEM warranty. These type of drives are generally either DOA or they go forever. I am always on the lookout for these drives and the refurbished ones perform like new.
- Cons: Would be nice if Western Digital would offer a little bit more than 30 day warranty on refurbished WDxxxxYS drives. The quality is there so why not flaunt it!
- Other Thoughts: Have bought these new, used ("bay town") and refurbished. Not expecting phenominal transfer rates from a 7200 RPM drives, however for my applications that is more than enough. Want something faster, -look into SAS drives at 10,000 RPM. Be prepared to shell out the $$$ for the drives and controller. These WD drives are well suited for most RAID applications while costing less.
1 disk over 4 received - DOA
- Pros: Cheap for this kind of disk (Near End line - Enterprise) supporting high IO and any form of RAID.
- Cons: Although those disk are refurbished, I was expecting better quality (Shipment?) when I bought them. Not even had the time to test or run the 4 disk together in a RAID 5 setup because 1 over 4 disks received was clicking non-stop, so Dead on Arrival (DOA). Unless your purchase is not critical (in time) do not buy those disk or a least not from Newegg. Consider to buy BRAND NEW DISK(s).
- Other Thoughts: I am disappointed about shipping quality (styrofoam and bubble wrap) and Quality assurance at NewEgg.ca. Those parts were coming from USA, not Canada and have travel a long long way to arrive at my home (almost from West coast to East...4000 km). So unsure if this defective HD was from shipping, stocking or manufacturing.

Superior reliability - Designed and manufactured to server-class standards to provide best-in-class enterprise reliability in high duty cycle environments. With 1.2 million hours MTBF at 100% duty cycle, these drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high-capacity drive. Low power - Active Power Save delivers best-in-class seek mode power consumption through an advanced WD firmware which conserves power in active seek modes without degrading performance. RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER) - A feature pioneered by WD, significantly reduces drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives. Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) - Provides best-in-class vibration tolerance by optimizing operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multidrive systems such as rack-mounted servers or network storage. |
