good box trouble with some things
- Pros: this thing plays probably 90% of the media i own with no problem
- Cons: certain codecs this will have a lot of difficulty with and it will freeze or skip. tends to have a lot of problems with very large higher def files. stutters pretty bad watching 720p or higher when there is a lot of action on the screen. but all in all plays the vast majority of my content with no problem.
A great way to enjoy your old media again!
- Pros: Plugged this into the SDTV in my son's room via composite. Ripped his cartoons and movies to .mpg and copied them onto an old USB HD I had laying around. It works like a charm. Now I don't need to worry about his DVDs getting lost or scratched. It also plays his music, with support for playlists. Remembers where you left off with any video file, and asks if you want to resume or start over from the beginning. Drop dead simple to operate. My son is 4, and he has no problems using it, because video thumbnails make it easy to select the file you want. A little wider than a deck of cards.
- Cons: Despite what some reviewers have said, this model does NOT have HDMI. Composite and component only. (Another WD TV model has HDMI) You'll need to pay more for a true HD solution, but for my old home movies and all my VHS tapes I've converted to .MPG, this thing is superb.

Why didn't i find this thing sooner?
- Pros: 3 cable setup (or 2 cable for non-hdtv's), small, extremely portable, plays every file I can throw at it from an 8GB flash drive. Eliminates the need to burn DVD's, and saves me the 20-30 minute convert/burn time..just drag and drop to a flash drive and play.. Small remote is easy to use, menus are extremely simple with tons of setup items.
- Cons: None None None None None. This thing is amazing. I'm buying 2 more for Christmas gifts.
- Other Thoughts: I wish I had known about this thing months/years ago.. instead of wasting money burning DVDs (and wasting more money on coasters..then wasting MORE money because my dvd player wouldn't read some discs). This thing is a great little device for the money..the higher end ones can connect wirelessly to your network and play directly through that..but hey, working from a flash drive is just find and dandy for me. GJ Western Digital, GJ.
Amazing little machine.
- Pros: It does what it's meant to do -- play the video files on your external harddrive on a tv via RCA jacks.
It's small (seriously not much bigger than a pack of playing cards) and it's so easy to set up and use that anyone could do it. I highly recommend this for anyone with kids, parents or grandparents. No more burning DVDs or CDs, this thing will not only play movies, but shows picture slideshows and plays audio files. GET IT!
- Cons: It doesn't play all video files. Whether it's because of the codecs or whatever, it will not play my .mov or all of my .avi files.
Kind of a bummer, but what can ya do? That's my only real gripe.
- Other Thoughts: This thing is lightweight, small and easy to set up and use.
If you think you want to get this, get it. I've been wanting something like this for awhile and when I saw the mini version of the bigger WD TV I jumped at the price. It doesn't do HDMI, but so what? It's a great little device that gets the job done, and done well. Western Digital never fails.
WDTV Light not Mini
- Pros: - Compact Design
- Easy to setup and use. - Plays many types of media files except for .mkv and x264.
- Cons: - DOES NOT play .mkv or x264/h.264 files
- No HDMI or 1080p
- Other Thoughts: After loving the performance of my other 2 WDTV's, I thought it was a no brainer to get this "mini" version for an older HD widecreen that only had component out and no HDMI. But this "mini" does not support the same files that the WDTV does.
Even though it can still output resolutions up to 1080i, it would NOT play my 720p BDrips in .mkv. Even the 720p h.264 files of TV shows that I regularly download and play on my WDTV's would NOT play.
I understand losing 1080p and HDMI for a "mini" version, but why the hell would they lose the .mkv and x.264/h.264 support? Well my bad for not doing more research and just trusting a brand from previous experience. Turns out this "mini" has a different chipset than the regular WDTV.
For a "mini" version that retails for only $20 less than the WDTV, but loses HDMI, 1080p, .mkv, and x.264/h.264 file support, this thing is more of a "light" instead of "mini"
