Western Digital WD Black WD2001FASS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Pros: They are quick when they work

Cons: We ordered 8 of these to begin with, and within a year we have had to RMA 5 of them. They are set in a raid configuration, and would either start throwing SMART errors and dropping from the raid, or they would just drop all together. We have had much better experiences with the WD2002FAEX drives. At first I thought it might have been a backplane or raid card issue, but testing the drives in other computers the drives just wouldn't hold up.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital has always had great support, but they have recently changed their RMA portal and it is horrible. I know that hard drives can fail but 5/8th of then within a year?

Pros: Fast, Worked.

Cons: Died in 1 1/2 years of normal usage

Other Thoughts: I wish there were more reliable drives out there. This is getting out of hand.

Pros: -2Tb capacity
-Large cache
-5 year warranty!!

Cons: -Started to have bad sectors after a year or so.

Other Thoughts: After about a year of storing my other program folders on this hard drive (with a SSD as my boot drive) it started to get some bad sectors. It started slowing my boot up time significantly and caused boot up issues. There werent any issues if I booted up without the drive. The bad sectors kept increasing, so I started transferring as much as I could onto a 1Tb drive. Ended up getting about 500Gb when it crapped out. Accomplished a quick zeroize on the first and last million, and afterwards tried a quick format, and it failed halfway through.
RMAing this one, but havent had many issues with WD in the 8 years of using their drives. Had 16kb of bad sectors on a 500Gb WD blue drive, but zeroized it and reformatted it and it is still goin strong (as a Movie storage device, not writing anything to it anymore). Also had an old raptor fail on me about 7 yrs ago (2 years after purchase), but that's about it.
Havent had any issues with my 3 other WD drives (2 are 1Tb black) definitely recomme

Pros: Drive performs well.

Cons: Western Digital will not honor the five year warranty on this item. WD claims my serial number is a one-year warranty item. NewEgg is clear on the "Overview" that this drive carries a five year limited warranty. However, WD will not honor that warranty.
So much for paying more for the "black" drive and a five year warranty.

I specifically bought this product because of the five year warranty. I feel cheated by WD.

The failure rate seems a little higher than expected for a high-end product.

Pros: None when 1/3 of them fail within the first year

Cons: Bought 6 of these on1/14/11 to use in a RAID 5 array. Paid extra for Caviar Black 5 year warranty expecting good drives. 1 failed after 11 months, and another failed after 12 months. Tons of data was lost.

Other Thoughts: rated 1 star because it won't let me give it zero stars

Pros: Fast drives
Relatively cheap
Easy installation

Cons: Not saying this is the reason why I'm getting momentary random freezes, even when I do Alt+Ctrl+Del (something that has never happened before), or when system is left idle for a while, or finished playing a movie. . .but from posts and comments throughout webland, it may be a strong factor. . .IF YOU ARE GOING TO RAID these drives, and you have a Windows 7 64 bit operating system. . .I recommend you do NOT buy these drives(buy Western Digital RE4-GP WD2002FYPS instead). Due to some firmware that is enabled in the enterprise editions of the WD drives, yes not enabled in these versions - you will not be able to download and use the WDTLER.exe to enable these drives because it only works on Windows 32 bit versions. It is very ungentlemanly on WD's part if this is truly the case(two egg demerits for WD not making it more public).

Other Thoughts: I'd be more than happy to turn these drives back to a RAID 1 configuration, so if what I'm saying is not true - would love to know. Will have to save up to buy the RAID appropriate WD drives.

Pros: It's fast, after initial access time.

Cons: Have this drive setup as a secondary harddrive in a custom built machine. Primary drive is an SSD Vertex 2, on a Asus Sabertooth X58. This drive seems to have a fairly long primary access time (5 seconds, give or take), after which the drive works fine, unless left inactive for a period of time.

Other Thoughts: Seems like the drive would work fine as a primary drive that's constantly being accessed, but feels like the drive is very (green) in spinup times.

Pros: Fast, space, space, space, space... and MOAR SPACE!!!!!! Two terabytes man. Hopefully it will last. Lots of room for more stuff :D

Cons: it wasn't free??? this drive is awesome

Other Thoughts: This is my 9th WD Caviar black Purchase. I've got 6 of the 1TB, and now 3 2TB Caviar blacks going as far back as 3 years ago and none of them have failed under heavy, heavy use. the WD Caviar Black lineup has been the most impressive HDD line I've ever used.. and I imagine this is meaningful considering I make a living building and selling computers, and custom making my own for fun :D If you want space, speed, and reliability, the WD Caviar black is the way to go. These drives ROCK!!!

Pros: It worked right out of the box with no problems. Seems to be a fast and solid drive so far.

Cons: I know it's a bare drive, but it would be nice if they just threw in 4 screws with it, luckily I still had some.

It's a little noisy.

Other Thoughts: The drive is a little noisy when it accesses data, but it's not too bad.

If you're migrating to this hard drive from an old one go to Google and search "acronis wd" which will take you to free cloning software hosted by WD. It worked without hassle and without problem for me.

Pros: Supposed to be their best drive. Supposed to be fast. Supposed to be durable. Has a good warranty.

Cons: Started failing after about 6 weeks. The SMART tests on my FreeNAS server are reporting Raw_Read_Errors and indicates the drive is "FAILING_NOW". Size and speed are great, but only if you can use them.

Other Thoughts: Returning to WD. You may have better luck than I, but then again, you may not.
