5 out of 5 eggsGood Functional Product

Pros: Simple functional design - no tricked out case or blinding LED here
Lots of storage
Quiet
Low power
Low cost

Cons: Needs power cord (expected with a 3.5" drive)
USB 2.0 only (expected in this price range)

Other Thoughts: Purchased this primarily to digitize my CD collection. So far it is working perfectly and provides enough storage to maintain true CD quality using FLAC. Of course, I'll also convert to Ogg-Vorbis for use with my portable player (props to SanDisk). Started out looking for an internal drive but this was lower price than the internal drive inside of it. Provides the option of using it as an external drive or disassembling and installing as an internal drive. Google “Elements External Disassembly” and you'll find simple instructions and a youtube video. The instructions show the drive to be a WD20EADS-11R6B1 and I confirmed mine to be the same using Linux command hdparm. This is the reduced power Caviar Green 5400rpm drive. I'm using mine externally for now but others have both succeeded and failed to get other drives to work in the case.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good.

Pros: Tons of room. It definitely solved my space problem and facilitated my Win7 upgrade. The blinking light is a good thing. I know it's working and doing data transfers. Some have moaned about it with reasons I can't comprehend. I like to be aware in some way that a drive is functioning.

Cons: A tad slow depending upon the media being transferred and its source. I wasn't expecting a paragon of speed so it's no biggie. If one is trying to move data to clean out another hard drive for reconfiguration it should not matter in the least how slow the drive is. I'd be a little apprehensive if it were too fast as that might burn it out quicker.
It's a bit warm but that is also to be expected. I wish the thing had a fan built in. That would make it noisier though.

Other Thoughts: I'm bummed out that a month later the price went down about $20. Oh well. Maybe in another month it will go down to $99 and I'll get another one.

5 out of 5 eggsNewegg rocks

Pros: Just received my shipment in 4 days flat on the free shipping provided. Newegg rocks ! So this review is basically for them and not for the product.

This is my 3rd WD (the previous 2 are, 2 years old and 1 year old and are working perfectly) and will post a review on it after using it for a couple of months.

Ordered 2 of them and got them for $100 each.

First impression of the product :

I clearly missed reading the SIZE specs and was in for a rude surprise on seeing the size of the drive. Its enormous.

I was under the impression that it would be like my previous 120GB passport and 1TB elements drives coz even for that enormous jump in space the size remained the same. So I was under the impression the 2TB elements would also be the same size.

So, REMEMBER TO LOOK AT THE SIZE SPECS and incase you don't get an idea compare it with 500GB portable or 1TB portable WD drives.

Cons: Like I said I'll post a review a couple of months later after using the product.

Other Thoughts: Drive space requirements are endless. So donot compromise and go in for a 1TB or 1.5TB drive and get stuck with them and later wanting another drive and then go mad having multiple drives around you.

Go for this one without contemplating any other company and drive size.

5 out of 5 eggsFunctional, works great

Pros: Works exactly as expected

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Make sure you set the drive for optimal performance in the device manager. Otherwise it's always ready to be disconnected and will transfer at obscenely slow rates. Easy to do and makes it transfer at the advertised rate.

3 out of 5 eggsSlow to be "ready"

Pros: * Large capacity at a great price
* Quiet
* Minimalist design

Cons: * Not suitable for expanding the capacity of a MediaSmart Windows Home Server. When the server wakes from sleep and looks for the drive, very often the drive won't be ready requiring the server to be rebooted.
* Using the WD Align utility helped somewhat

Other Thoughts: Another reviewer mentioned not being able to run unattended backups with this drive and I wonder if the root of the problem is the same. This drive is slow to be "ready" but once it is, it works fine. Perhaps some are taking just a little too long to spin up.

Pros: quiet

Cons: Purchased in Feb, used for weekly backups. Dead in Aug.

Other Thoughts: What's worse than no backup? An unreliable one.
