WD TV HD Live
- Pros: First off, People are saying that the fast forward FFV is terrible even at 16X, well if you hit FF 2X and then hit the >| it will jump about 30minutes forward, no need to use 16X, also it says in the manual that |< and >| are used to scroll a page at a time, this helps tremendously. Did play a MKV that was H.264/DTS audio played perfectly. Plays any ISO dvd file no mounting anymore. Playes almost any type of Audio file, M4A AAC non-drm Itunes plays well.
- Cons: I use the network share function, seems to run the circle forever , doing a reset all settings to factory fixes that. Maybe my network shares are messed up, but I have them set to Anon access, Along with the Buffalo NAS. This unit does not like to play really low quality .wav files, or very very lowres .avi files. But it is a HD unit so who cares. Also there is no DVD menu support, it simply starts playing the movie, and skips any menu selections. Cant wait for the netflix support that would be a great addition to this product.
- Other Thoughts: Very nice not having to boot up a HTPC and wait for windows to load, and using a wireless trackball remote is a pain. People who say there is no volume, use the TV remote, or your satellite/cable remote, Its right there? Right ?!
Handy little box
- Pros: 1. Very capable little media box. It has played everything I have tried so far except for old (<7.0) MOV files. Newer MOV's play fine.
2. Quick and easy to use. Non-techie family members feel comfortable with using it. 3. Makes it very easy to look through old digital photos you may have forgotten you had. 4. Video looks great.
- Cons: 1. Oddly enough, the box seems to handle video much better than photos as there is always a slight pause when flipping between photos. Not a huge problem, but noticeable.
2. If you plug up a large drive (say 250GB or more), and have lots of files the initial scan seems to take forever. If you try to use it while it is scanning the playback suffers a bit. Let it sit and finalize the scan, then you should be fine. 3. Really wish it had a wifi chip in it for the price, but at least they support cheap 3rd party wifi dongles (even though that then takes up your back usb port; there is a 2nd one on the side though).
- Other Thoughts: 1. WD needs to keep those firmware updates coming. There are several small issues that you can tell exist as they would with most newly released products, but nothing that should cause you to shy away from a purchase.
2. Parents with little kids who like watching DVD's may find it handy to rip their own DVD collections and view them using this device vs a normal DVD player. It is faster to load, has more features, and keeps the discs from getting scratched up.

Highly Recommended
- Pros: Easy to set up, easy to use. Great having all of my DVDs available at the touch of a button, no more searching through stacks of DVDs trying to find a movie. Having the cover art makes it easy to navigate through them. Playback is excellent, no jumpiness or hesitation. I hooked up a a WD 640 GB Elements external drive, and I now have a seamless, compact, quiet, and fast solution for all of my multimedia.
- Cons: I found an MP4 rip I made to be a bit jumpy, but the MKV and AVI rips I have tried have all worked flawlessly. People have also talked about this unit getting very hot, but that has not been my experience, even after hours of movie watching it stays relatively cool. Wireless network adapter support is apparently limited. I had a D-Link adapter I tried to use with it, but it didn't work. Wireless N is recommended by WD anyway for streaming through this device, and I do not have that infrastructure in place.
- Other Thoughts: I shopped around for quite a while for a device to handle my multimedia digitally, and even tried the media center PC route for a while. This is far superior and easier. If all you want to do is play your ripped DVDs, this is a great and inexpensive solution.
Love NewEgg
- Pros: Setup is easy. It even automatically did a firmware update. Didn't take to long to share videos from my PC. So far any video or pictures we have streamed from my home wired network as been flawless.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: To early for an opinion on the rebate. Will update if there is an issue.
Still Loving It
- Pros: Great GUI, easy set-up, fast connection, plays everything even ISO's, finds subtitle tracks automatically, small size. Makes my friends jealous.
- Cons: The remote works great but it is too small for us guys with large hands.
- Other Thoughts: I use this almost every day and it still amazes me. It just flat out performs. It plays it all. I recently played a 10 gig ISO file streamed from my PC and it played great. MKV looks super.
