1 out of 5 eggsWORST DECISION IN MY LIFE

Pros: 1TB

Cons: Worst HDD in the planet...i have IDE drive that preformed better than this JUNK...197 BAD Sectors and 456 Weak Sector the week after purchase.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this in the mistake of looking at quantity before quality...BAD MOVE!! My intention of utilizing this HDD was for Back-Ups (Music, Videos and Other Important Things)

2 out of 5 eggsVery slow drive

Pros: Lots of space, good for general storage, and very quiet.

Cons: Extremely slow for use as a primary drive. Constantly hangs while accessing data.

Other Thoughts: It had been a few years since I built my last system, so it was time to start fresh. This seemed like a decent drive for the price, based on several reviews I read online. When I got the system up and running Windows XP, it was considerably slower than my previous system (see specs below for both). I noticed that while most games ran fine (Oblivion, UT, etc.) the system was very slow when opening a web page or loading Word. It also was slow to change web pages and switching between apps. I finally noticed that everytime the system lagged, the hard drive light was on (indicating that the computer was accessing data). I decided to replace the drive with a Spinpoint F3 and the computer is considerably faster now. The WD10EARS now resides in my kids' computer. I would only recommend this drive as a secondary storage unit and go with a much faster drive to use as a primary drive.

Specs: Old: Athlon 3200+, 250GB IDE WD, Geforce 6800 256MB. New: Athlon II X3 435, 1TB F3, Radeon5670

1 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival

Pros: I'll never know.

Cons: The best it did was to report S.M.A.R.T. Capable but Command Failed; tried multiple cabling and motherboard SATA ports to no avail. After an hour or so, it just became a quiet, silver brick.

Other Thoughts: I have to pay shipping, so I'm out several bucks. I'd pay a little extra to have the drives screened ahead of time before having to go through RMA, reorder, and try again. I suspect that's why we don't see high failure rates on pre-built PCs--the manufacturering/assembly process does this weeding for consumers.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: The free software provided by WD is very easy to use, and powerful. Windows didn't even run a scandisk after moving my install.

Cons: I really can't think of anything bad about the drive. To some it may be a little confusing about the "align" aspect.

Other Thoughts: Great buy, and price.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet Drive

Pros: It's super quiet, I don't hear any noise from the hard drive (in external case 4 feet away). Acceptable speed, it's way faster than my 2.5" drive and a little slower than the 7200 drive.

Cons: Be careful~~ The faceplate is extreme sharp, I can't believe I've got a light cut on one of my finger.(I'm glad is not bleeding)

Other Thoughts: It's a perfect hard drive for hybrid, specially external setup. (SSD as system drive, this 1TB as storage drive)

3 out of 5 eggsFAIL

Pros: Western Digital as a brand is very reliable and trust-worthy. Their drives are fast, quiet, and efficient.

Cons: Had a complete catastrophic failure with my most recent purchase of this drive. First when I powered it on it made the tick of death, but then after spinning for a moment it began to squeak loudly and then I could hear what can only be described as the sound of a hard drive needle scratching a spinning platter. It doesn't get much worse than that.

Other Thoughts: I am not trying to deter anyone from buying these drives, my intent is merely to inform of my experience. Newegg is replacing the drive and I imagine the replacement will work fine.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive and cool running

Pros: Drive runs cool. Great for storage and backup of a lot of files

Cons: Formatting this drive is not for the simple minded person. If you buy it and don't know what to do, just Google how to format a Western Digital 1tb Green drive

Other Thoughts: Very good price. Dam I got free shipping and got it in 1 day, nice one newegg

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive, but...

Pros: Quiet, good write speeds when properly aligned, ...

Cons: 4096 byte sectors instead of 512 byte sectors. This bit of information caused me to have slow write performance but I was able to fix it.

Other Thoughts: This drive uses 4096 byte sectors, when most operating systems and/or partitioning tools are used to 512 byte sectors. This will cause problems if care is not taken when partitioning the drive for Linux, BSD, possibly other alternative operating systems. Windows XP and earlier are the worst effected, according to the manufacturer. Windows Vista and Windows 7 apparently handle this out of the box. Basically you have to align the partitions yourself so that they start on sectors divisible by 8. I would not recommend this drive unless you are using the latest Windows, can handle this kind of manual partitioning yourself, or know someone who can do this setup for you.
