1 out of 5 eggsRMA'd in less than a year

Pros: The drive was Cheap $50! when I bought it .
It performs pretty quick and holds a lot of data.

Cons: The drive begin to fail and die about 7 months in. It not will no longer spin up. Was not able to back it up before it went down.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what to make of this other than the drive died. I was so certain I was getting BSOD from my corsair SSD. Once I disconnected my WD harddrive all of my system issues cleared up.

Even at $50 losing a TB of data sucks. Waiting for my RMA.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: I purchased one of these refurbished on newegg a year ago. I recently needed to buy another one in a hurry so I went to a nearby store and bought it for around the same price that it is currently sold here. This is a great drive, recording CCTV cameras 24/7 for the past year, no problem whatsoever and the temperatures are always low.

Cons: It's only 5400 rpm, it's not good to use as a primary drive.

Other Thoughts: For Linux, with the 4KB advanced format, you have to set up partitions with cfdisk or fdisk to begin with Sector 64 or higher instead of the default 63 and EXT4 is highly recommended over EXT3 to get optimal performance.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked great for me!

Pros: I use this as my storage drive and it works amazingly! So glad I bought it!

Cons: Nothing so far!

Other Thoughts: The price has risen and quality has dropped for hard-drives ATM. There has been some floods in Thailand and there has been part shortages, please be patient with hard drives right now.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Dies extremely fast

Other Thoughts: Bought this 2 years after building my computer for extra storage because i am a gamer and wanted to use my main, faster hard drive only for programs and storing games. My main hard drive (now almost 4 year old) is still kicking strong with no problems. This one however is giving me problems and on its way to failing. It started giving me problems earlier than this review but I always seemed to be able to get it working again, now the problems are happening more frequently and for longer periods of times.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes WD even test their drives?

Pros: Newegg packs them very well and RMA process is easy.

Cons: They are just paper weights.

Bought 3 of these. Two were dead on arrival. One with the click of death, doesn't spin up, and reports 0mb size. The other fails SMART diagnostics, has read/write errors out of the box.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure Western Digital even tests their drives before peddling them out to retailers.

I should have listened to the reviews on how bad these are. Buy your drives from local retailer if possible in case they are bad.

I'm sending the 3rd drive back too. I can't imagine it will last long.

3 out of 5 eggsGood for a time

Pros: When I bought it, it was really cheap, for the capacity, and fit perfectly for my budget build.

Cons: Only really good for storage. NOT something you want to run as a boot drive, as it's slow, and you will end up swearing a lot if you do run it as a boot drive. Not the most reliable drive on the market...but you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: After having it since July 2010, this drive bit the dust last night (4/07/12), suddenly (over the course of minutes) degrading in performance to where it was un-usable. SMART confirmed this with 4x the tolerance for read failures. Fsck (linux's chkdsk) was unable to fix all the errors. Trying to get it replace as it's still under warranty I think. Note that this happened very suddenly, and nothing had touched that machine to physically cause any damage, and it was ALWAYS kept cool. If it happens to you the same way, you will not see it coming.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Very quiet. Low heat and loads of storage.

Cons: After almost 18 months to the day of installing it, the drive has failed. I have been buying WD and using them in builds for friends and family for years. This is the first one to not last at least 3 years.

I am rather disappointed I am going to be eating the cost of this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK DRIVES

Pros: NONE

Cons: BOUGHT 2, NEITHER EVER WORKED!

Other Thoughts: SO FRUSTRATING TO NEED A DRIVE AND HAVE TWO NEW IN THE BOX AND BOTH ARE WORTHLESS.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far in our HTPC

Pros: Still working after more than a year on our HTPC that runs nearly 24/7. Quieter than our old 250 GB HDD that we replaced.

Cons: The current price due to the flooding in Taiwan. We paid half of the current price.

Games don't load as fast as they did on our old 7200 RPM HDD, but that's to be expected with a 5400 RPM drive.

Other Thoughts: We use this in our Shuttle XPC running Win7 Pro x64 with an older dual core AMD CPU. It works great for watching 1080p movies.

I really hope this drive lasts three years or more so I can put it in an external enclosure when 2 TB drives come back down in price.

4 out of 5 eggsRecommend for Data Storage Only

Pros: I bought two of these sometime in May, 2011 for a twin custom build.

With around 800 hours of use each they have worked fine at an average temperature of about 33C, and they hold 1 TB of data.

Cons: This drive is extremely slow and should be used as a backup drive for mass data storage only.
-1 Star.
Even slower than I had anticipated.

Other Thoughts: I made the mistake of trying to record 1080p quality video with it and my recording FPS never went higher than 24.

I am looking into getting a SATA III SSD ASAP.

Take my advice and buy a SATA III HD or SSD for your OS if you can or your build will forever be flawed!
