3 out of 5 eggsFailure rate - for me - is too high

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Slow r/w
High failure rate (See other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: Back in 2014, I bought 5 of these. 4 for a personal 4TB nas, and one for my home desktop. Three of those have failed. I have secured them, kept them between 20 and 40 degrees celcius, and spin them down when not in use for long periods of time. I would recommend getting something with a longer lifespan.

3 out of 5 eggs2/3 Drives dead over 5 years

Pros: Low power.

Cons: Originally came with annoyingly frequent head-parking timings. This can be corrected with a MS-DOS only program which is a pain to run on a linux machine. 2 Drives with SMART read failures after 5 years of light use.

Other Thoughts: Would have hoped to get better lifetime out of these drives, but 5 years is at least reasonable.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in 90 days

Pros: Price

Cons: It became corrupted and completely unusable within 90 days, but I didn't realize that's what was happening until it was too late. I don't know why I didn't realize it. I wouldn't recommend this product unless you're diligent with returning broken garbage, which this can quickly become.

5 out of 5 eggsbackups

Pros: Works as intended

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: I use this is as an offsite backup drive for my system. I store the disk at work, and bring it home periodically to run the backups.

I've heard bad thinks about using it in raid, and Green isn't quite as fast as other drives, so it's an ideal drive for backups.

I use an eSATA bay to copy the data.

2 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: They worked well within the warranty (2yr) period. That's why they get 2 eggs, and not 1.

Cons: Congrats WD on designing these drives to fail shortly after the two year mark. I currently have 3 of these in my home. One flaked out with bad sectors/unable to read/write months ago, another went from 'OK' in CrystalDisk to the same bad sectors/unable to read/write just yesterday.

Other Thoughts: After the first one I figured 'Oh lucky me, the first drive that's ever failed on me was nearly empty'. The second one contained 500gigs of music that I luckily recovered after babying the drive through small transfers. Switched it up to a RAID setup and am using some WD Enterprise drives - hopefully they provide more than 2 years of life.

Meanwhile I have a small P4 shuttle PC in the other room that's used for minimal web browsing and steaming mp3's. This machine is using a 10+ year old 74GB WD Raptor (N82E16822144160) that runs flawlessly. In addition to the Raptor it has another 10+ year old WD 120GB IDE drive in it that also works just fine. I'm hoping WD still makes their enterprise drives like this.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Chris, we apologize for any inconvenience. All Western Digital products are tested and determined to meet WDs stringent quality standards before they are shipped to our resellers. Please note that there are many variables that can result in a failed drive, such as power outages, accidental physical damage, internal component failure, and computer viruses; Advanced format drives performance on Windows XP machines will degrade unless the Partition is properly aligned with a Sector. We recommend running the align tool for Windows XP only machines from the link below.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst...Drive...Ever

Pros: It worked for a few months

Cons: Not for use as a Primary or Secondary drive

Other Thoughts: After being used as a storage drive for about 6 months, I installed this drive into my main computer as a drive to install and play games from Steam. After a few months, I was getting blue screens and hard locks while playing certain games. I ran a disk scan using WD's software and it told me I had too many errors?!? Using a commercial program, it was diagnosed with having over 65,000 sector errors! After fixing the drive, it was only able to access about 300gb of the original 1tb. Terrible!
