3 out of 5 eggsSlow and SMART errors reported

Pros: It hasn't failed yet even though SMART reporting says there are problems with the drive. Quiet.

Cons: SMART monitoring reports lots of errors. Slow to respond.

I won't buy another one of these "green" drives.

Other Thoughts: I got this drive as an experiment to see if I could live with the drive's limitations, and I hate it. The drive is slow, I can't trust it due to repeated SMART errors being reported, but it hasn't actually lost any data. I use it as a local mirror of a slow backup device so if it fails I won't lose anything, and it's still a bit faster than the networked backup device.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 2 years

Pros: Cheap (comparatively speaking at the time of purchase)

Cons: Dead after two and half years. I used it to back up my family pictures. Now all of it is gone. Don't make the same mistake I did. Stay away from this unreliable product.

3 out of 5 eggsGREEN LACK OF QUALITY

Pros: Low price. Good RMA service. WD allows you to buy discounted shipping labels for RMA's. You can also get a faster replacement if you pay for a new drive, then get refunded when the other is received by WD.
I have Blue & Black series WD drives that over 5 years old & are still running. I've been using mostly WD drives for 25+ years with almost no problems till I started using the green series.

Cons: This is my 4th Green series drive I've sent back due to problems. 3 2TB & this 1TB. I've had more failures in the few years the green series has been out than in the previous 20+ years.

Other Thoughts: Either I'll buy pairs of green for a RAID 1 array or use them in a NAS. I may also stick to using the Blue or Black series even if they cost more up front. The black series still carries a 5yr warranty. They lowered the warranty time on the others.
Although they have better than average RMA treatment, it still doesn't make up for the problems from loss of data. I'll still be building a NAS to act as backup As I get more blue & black series drives. The green series will act as backup drives.

4 out of 5 eggsStill running strong

Pros: -Plenty of storage space (932 GB once formatted)
-Works at advertised speed
-Got this on sale for $49.99

Cons: -Not as fast as I'd like, but its a SATA II 3.0 Gbps 5400 RPM, so can't as for much more

Other Thoughts: I use this as an external hard drive, keeping lots of videos on it. I've had this for a little over 1.5 years and it's still running strong.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Worked great for me for 2 years. It was the main hard drive for my server installation

Cons: It failed after a little more than 2 years in operation. I expected more life from a WD product, but I was surprised. I will go with an enterprise solution next time for my server.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in less than 2 years

Pros: Low $/GB, Low power consumption

Cons: Not meant for back-up storage, Unreliable

Other Thoughts: Purchased this to use with an OWC external FireWire 800 enclosure for use as the drive for Apple Time Machine backups. Apparently, this drive was not up to the task and died after a little over a year and a half. Still under warranty, so RMA going back to Western Digital.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after 1.5yrs

Pros: Cost

Cons: Failed after 1.5yrs

Other Thoughts: I used this drive for storage and for that purpose it was decent. Luckily it was in a mirror array so all my data is still safe. In my opinion 1.5yrs for a drive that is not an OS drive running at a mere 5400 RPM is poor. I currently have drives that are built much better, i.e. Samsung F1
