2 out of 5 eggsWorked for 3.5 yrs and then died

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: worked great for about 3 yrs and then started having problems when I connected it to a Windows 8.1 PC.

Cons: Seemed to be a little slow transfer rate even with USB 2.0. As it started to die, the computer wouldn't see the drive.

Other Thoughts: Is 3.5 years a good lifetime? Seems a bit short to me. Next time I'll probably look elsewhere for an external HD.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear orbops, it is unfortunate that your drive failed sooner than expected. Please note that there are many variables that can result in a failed drive, such as power outages, accidental physical damage, internal component failure, and computer viruses, just to name a few.

4 out of 5 eggsHandy Device

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: -Lots of storage
-Dependable Name
-Looks nice?

Cons: -Slow with large transfers (but this is with 2.0)

Other Thoughts: I find great use for this when I need to dump important (but large) files into storage for record keeping purposes. I personally have never had a bad experience with a WD product...so I could be a bit bias.

5 out of 5 eggs3 Years and going strong

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: Still running after 3 years of use.

Cons: USB2.0 is starting to show its age.

Other Thoughts: This is just an update to a review I submitted back in Feb 2010. I have been using this drive continually for the past 3 years and I have not encountered any issues on it. I'm using it as a download repository, photo storage and shared network drive for my WD Live TV. It uses a WD Green WD15EARS, and even though a lot of the reviews on that drive are average, I have to say that I'm still happy with my purchase. The speed is still acceptable for USB2.0, but ultimately it is still USB2.0 so I might eventually rip the drive out and put it in a faster enclosure. But until then, this drive has been great.

3 out of 5 eggsdied after 1.5 yrs of light use

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: good while it worked

Cons: poor durability. It suddenly died after 1.5 yrs of very light usage. As I read other reviews, it seems clear that WD drives are like playing Russian Roulette: great if you don't get the bullet, but once in a while you'll get shot.

Time to explore another brand!

1 out of 5 eggsAlways breaks the same way

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: It's nice having a backup drive that is so much bigger than the drives on my computers that I don't have to worry about running out when I'm backing up several computers.

Cons: This is the second Western Digital backup drive that has burned me. The break is where the USB cable goes into the back of the drive. Once this breaks off, it's really expensive to have someone retrieve the data off your drive, and suddenly, the drive you've been using to preserve all your data is itself gone.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Elements Desktop 1.5TB, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
When connecting and disconnecting a USB drive, please apply only the necessary pressure to connect the USB cable into the Elements, since applying extra force may damage the connector. 2 out of 5 eggsnot satisfied

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1.5TB Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: Good price, lots of space

Cons: Takes forever for window 7 to recognize it. Sometimes never works, data is corrupt transferring, overall its now a paper weight.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD
Elements drive, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
It is unfortunate you received a drive that was not in working condition. Let us assure you, every drive
undergoes a rigorous testing procedure and must be in good working condition before it leaves our warehouse.
Since this drive was designed as a plug-n-play device, we recommend reapplying the SES drivers to ensure the
proper drivers are installed on your machine. Since there can be a variety of reasons to which a drive may stop
functioning correctly, we recommend replacing the cable and/or connecting the drive to a different computer
to check if the issues persist. For additional information, please refer to the following links:

In addition, if the drive is plug into a surge protector, we recommend plugging the drive directly to the wall outlet
to eliminate the possibility of a defective surge protector and to ensure the drive is receiving adequate power.
