4 out of 5 eggsStorage Wars?

Pros: Its a storage beast. Does very well holding your data. Saves you a ton on your Power consumption.

Cons: Definitely not a OS drive. Was expecting faster, especially for a 64MB Cache Hard Drive. Got some lag when accessing the drive.

Other Thoughts: Was expecting a faster drive for sure. But if all you need is a large hard drive to store your stuff. You could do alot worse.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy for server use

Pros: Cheap

Cons: I have replaced 2 of these drives EVERY year for the last three years in my WHS setup. I have 4 drives in the server, 2 Western Digital Caviar Greens and 2 Hitachi Deskstars. Surprisingly, the Deskstars have been going strong for 4 years in a row. Every year, the greens would start throwing bad sectors and I'd manage to salvage some of the data before the drive dies completely before I call WD for an RMA. The first two, I figured was just a fluke. The second time...who knows. Third time, I was so fed up, I asked WD to substitute something else and managed to get one Caviar Black and then a direct Caviar Green replacement. Year 4: Caviar Black is going strong but the Caviar Green is on its last legs with bad sectors and sometimes simply not starting. Need to call WD again to see if I can get the Green replaced with something else. Since the Thailand situation hasn't improved, I suspect I'm stuck with another Green...

Other Thoughts: at least WD RMA service is quick

4 out of 5 eggsjust great.

Pros: high capacity for smaller sise discks.
WD. fast enough. works great. easy to format.
quite and smoothly faster than s.g.

Cons: not black, as in 3 years warranty with recycable materials.

Other Thoughts: bought it for $70 before the flud.up to $110, this is a great value. would buy it for $100.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives, but configured stupidly OOTB

Pros: Just what I wanted for my RAID6 array:
Low power consumption
High capacity

Cons: Configured to park the head way too quickly. After 8 months in my array these drives had *600,000* head park cycles. This is easily fixed by running wdidle3 once, but you have to know to do it, so DON'T FORGET TO RUN WDIDLE3 ON THESE DRIVES. :-)

3 out of 5 eggsJust failed

Pros: Quiet, low power, worked for a while. 2nd identical drive still works though fingers crossed.

Cons: Purchased two of these drives on 28Mar11. They are both utilized as a back up for my HTPC, not in RAID config, FreeNAS software. HTPC syncs with FreeNAS by way of Microsoft synctoy.

Noticed an error copying some files to the FreeNAS (Win 7 indication). Dug a bit deeper and saw a SMART error on the FreeNAS control panel, specifically Read Error Rate with indication of "Failing Now". Pulled the drive from the FreeNAS computer and placed it on my Win 7 desktop. Ran the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diag on the drive. Needless to say, it wasn't good. Drive could not complete any diagnostic test (quick, extended) without failing. Though on the extended it would get towards the last sectors and stall/fail. Trying to write zeros (to clean disc of data) failed as well. Placing the disc back into FreeNAS, I attempted to move some of the files to the desktop...which went incredibly slow...so I just stopped it.

Submitted for a RMA and mailed out the drive the same day (Thursday)

Other Thoughts: First hard drive from Western Digital that has ever failed on me and I've purchased many since 1996. One bad apple doesn't spoil my opinion of them.

Hey, at least I get to see how their RMA process goes! Will start the clock once the tracking number (from FedEx) indicates it was delivered.

1 out of 5 eggsFail

Pros: Lets skip this for now.

Cons: Purchased four drives, and they all failed. One DOA and the other three have slowly died, they keep failing in my RAID.

3 out of 5 eggsVery disappointing

Pros: They have high capacity.

Cons: I purchased four drives. Two of them have shown failed sectors with data loss through smart already. They also seem to be surprisingly slow, possibly due to the advanced format running on server 2003 although I did try adding the jumper for Windows XP support and that didn't seem to have an impact.

Other Thoughts: I have used WD drives for years and these have been the first to give me a reason to be disappointed. I will think twice before buying this brand again.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drives

Pros: I bought two of these and have them running mirrored in a NAS. They are holding up well and have had no problems to report

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these before the hard drive market turned. $79 each. I'd wait until the prices come back down if you can.

1 out of 5 eggsDead!

Pros: Quickly - Dead after 4 months, lost all data! WD is replacing it with a 3 TB drive. WD says it is probably the controller card attached to the drive, as the problem. Controller Cards are not available for purchase at a fair price..

Cons: Seeing many bad reviews on WD20EARS, i don't know if I want to trust any WD Green Drives, Maybe the green is the problem?
