2 out of 5 eggsMore Failed Drives...

Pros: Quiet and fast enough.

Cons: Failed after 3-years. I have three of these and two have failed in the past week. Disappointing.

2 out of 5 eggs4 years of light usage = failure

Pros: Worked okay as a backup drive.

Cons: Failed after 4 years of light usage, 1 year out of warranty. Not recommended -

Other Thoughts: This drive was primarily used as a backup, which meant that heavy read/writes cycles were rare. I was hoping that this would outlast a much older primary Seagate 1TB drive, but it died before.

My Seagate continues to hum along while this drive has crashed and burned. Between this and several other WD portable drives failing, I'm pretty turned off to Western Digital storage as a whole...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive great price

Pros: Had this drive for 3 years. I use it for storage, and do run games from it, though rarely. Speed is great for the type of drive it is, no complaints.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggs3 Year Drive

Pros: Lasted 1 year more than their warrantee. I have 4 of these in a RAID5, so luckily only 1 died so, I didn't lose all my data.

Cons: It lasted 1 year more than their warrantee. I have this in a RAID 5, so I have to buy more for backup. Would definitely use another manufacturer but concerned about compatibility in my configuration.

Other Thoughts: I gotta hand it to WD for being able to manufacture a product that fails so soon after their warrantee expires. Unfortunately for them, there are many other companies that manufacture the same product that we can buy from.

2 out of 5 eggsWish I had not bought this drive

Pros: It was cheap back in 2011. That is why I bought it. Not because of the "green" aspect.

Cons: Although it did not fail a SMART test, I could not load the drive for any other test and I have a suite of testing software that I use as a pc tech. I put the drive into an external enclosure and was able to access the data. However, once I replaced the drive back into service inside my file server it took forever to initialize and I was unable to format. Maybe if I let it sit for hours I would eventually be able to use the drive for a bit.

Other Thoughts: I should have heeded the warnings I was reading when I ordered the drive. Sad. I'm upgrading all my 1.5/2 TB drives to 4TB drives, but it still would be nice to be able to use my old drives when they are only a few years old.

2 out of 5 eggsDrive doesn't hold up

Pros: Large capacity, affordable price

Cons: Poor quality control, 2 year warranty, doesn't hold up over time even when not in use.

Other Thoughts: SMART is warning that this drive is imminent danger of complete failure. This is happening after less than 48 hours of actual powered on use. I originally bought this drive for offline storage of my ripped DVD collection. All of my live media is stored on a RAID array. Up until today, the only use this drive has seen has been while it was being formatted and while I copied about 1.7 TB of data onto it for backup. After that, it was powered down, disconnected, put back into its antistatic bag and placed in a drawer for storage.

Today, about 4 years later, after building a new raid, I connected the WD Green drive to reload my media files. I immediately got a SMART warning that the drive was about to fail. Luckily I was able to successfully copy the data off the drive onto the RAID.

While I understand that this drive only had a two year warranty, I find it ridiculous that it is failing after less than 48 hours of run time.

5 out of 5 eggs4 Year After Review

Pros: This coming November will be the HDD 4th anniversary and it's still working like day 1.

I have reformat the computer several times and it's working perfectly

Cons: Not so far after 4 years.

Other Thoughts: It's still a good HD to go with, specially this days, if you want an HDD that will only store documents, movies or music, etc, it's a very viable and reliable HD, there are new HD's that will be much better for though environments, but as storage unit, like I use it now in the HD enclosure, you will be satisfied and it will get the job done.
