3 out of 5 eggsFast, noisy, failed

Pros: Fast
Good Space
Good Value

Cons: Noisy
Failed after 1 year
Replacement Warranty=3 months

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive for $99 in May 2013. It's a fast drive. I do a lot of photo editing, and it sped up my entire workflow.

However, sometimes it would lock up the system, and I was getting corrupted files every so often. I ran lots of diagnostics, and it kept passing. Eventually, the entire system became unworkable.

I finally reinstalled the OS on an old WD SATA 3.0 250 GB Blue drive I had for backup. Then I ran the diagnostic program from WD's website. The Black drive failed the quick test. The extended test found bad sectors and repaired them, but it continued to fail the quick test. I set up an RMA w/ WD. They sent out a replacement drive quickly. I have to send them the broken one, which will cost $8.

This drive is 18 months old. It came with a 5 year warranty. The replacement drive only comes with a 3-month warranty. I guess that means I only got a 21-month warranty.

Also, the new drive is LOUD. I'm not sure if it is louder than the old one was, but it is certainly louder than the Blue or the Green drives I have.

I know there is a new generation out, and right now it is selling for $75. Perhaps it's quieter. If not, I would go with the cheaper Blue drive. Also, make sure you have a backup, one way or the other. No HDD is bullet proof.

2 out of 5 eggsWD HDDs prematures failure(s)

Pros: These drives run reasonably fast when they work.

Cons: Recived shortly after ordering.

Other Thoughts: Purchased one on 6/14/2012 from newegg for a new build, died 12/10/2014 with little use, only used 2 to 3 hours daily.

12/10/2014 computer became extremely slow, then pausing for about 15 seconds at a time with the HDD light constantly on.

Ran WD diagnostics and it failed miserably. The drive became a 615 or so MB HDD, the rest was all bad sectors. After the test and a reboot, Windows would not start at all. Returned to WDC under warranty.

I had to RMA two others of the same model that were installed in different computers recently and got refurbs back from WDC. They are still working so far. I'm faithfully backing them up often.

I've been using WD HDDs for well over a dacade, still have two of the first HDDs from them that still work, though they have become 'museum' pieces.

I have now purchased a new WD drive because I need one sooner than I will be getting the last warranty replacement drive from them, but this is my last one, it's time to move on.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Great drive, fast, good for gaming and one used as a OS drive.

Cons: None really

Other Thoughts: I feel the most comfortable ordering from NewEgg, as they pack the hard drives properly, and know how to ship it.

1 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital goes downhill

Pros: Capacity

Cons: Unreliable

Other Thoughts: Western Digital used to be my 'go to' drive. I built gaming PC's for many years. I have never had so many problems than with WD drives. From portable, the Passport series is horrible, to internal, had a 1TB fail on me twice. They are the big boys, maybe too big now. Disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsSpeed

Pros: Fast. Even being 60% full, it loads up games with speeds comparable to my friend using his SSD.

Decent price for storage space/speed.

Silent, unlike my friend with his 15000 RPM HDD's.

Cons: None...

I guess it does tend to just sit in my computer. Doesn't do house work....

1 out of 5 eggspaper weights

Pros: look professional

Cons: three out of four drives have failed, one failed SMART test, one failed WD's Extended Test with "too many bad sectors", one failed as a Win7 Pro system drive after several months of light use, one passes WD's extended test and will hopefully be useful.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives but why the inflation?

Pros: I bought 2 of these for a new system early 2013 and as of the end of 2014 I have yet to have a problem with either drive. At the time they had a great price and good speed without going the route of SSD.

Cons: None until I decided to order a bunch for a person home server I am building only to find out the price has doubled since I got them.

Other Thoughts: Guess I won't be buying this product again, not when you can get something similar with more room for the same price I paid for these 2 years ago.
