5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: -fast
-1tb!
-quiet (makes little working noises when read/write but otherwise silent)
-it hasn't failed

Cons: -it's now 180 bucks. i got it at 100
-931 GB formatted isn't technically a terabyte but it's good enough

Other Thoughts: I've had this thing as a data and program drive alongside an ssd C drive, and it's awesome. I'm using about 300GB of the 931 available.

I thought it'd be slow, but i'm getting 120MB/s seq read and write, 512KB random read 76 and 132 write, 4KB random is 0.728 read and 1.465 write, and 4KB (QD32) 1.870 read and 1.594 write. That's pretty darn good compared to drives a few years ago.

Photoshop/lightroom launches instantly. games are quick.
A year and a half, and strong. Very happy with this drive. I'd buy another.

1 out of 5 eggsPray you don't need an RMA

Pros: Great drive... when it works.

Cons: Bought three of these. The first two work great. The third one sat in a box until I needed it a month ago. When I plugged it up, it was dead. Ran several tests, and it is definitely doa. Navigated a maze of tech support and ended up talking to someone who could barely make out what I was saying. After 20 mins. on hold, I was finally issued an RMA number. But, that RMA number doesn't match up to the Western Digital site. The site tells me that the RMA doesn't exist, so I can't send it back. Time is money, and I've already wasted money on this product. The support for western digital SUCKS.

Other Thoughts: Support with any company is a joke today. Might as well budget that part of your gear simply won't work, and you'll have to repurchase it without a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDDs

Pros: Been running two of these as secondary storage since they came out 4-5 years ago. Absolutely no problems, working fine to this day, very reliable.

Cons: Too expensive to be competitive on the current market.

Other Thoughts: Don't actually buy this model anymore. You can get other equivalent and better HDDs for cheaper. I think this was probably 1st generation for what what is common nowadays.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat performance mechanical drives

Pros: Performance
Reliability
Quiet

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have used these drives in performance builds for a long time they work great in raid arrays or as a single drive. When i have a build build that requires large storage but still needs the extra speed I use the Black drives, If speed is not needed I use the blue drives, so far for the last 5 years i have not had one fail yet in any build! I have found these to be better performers than other brands and the most reliable.

4 out of 5 eggsGood HDD

Pros: It is quiet. Quiet enough I ordered its brother today, the WD1003FZEX. It's fast considering its an HDD. It still carries a five year warranty.

Cons: It lasted 3 years, six months and two days before total failure. Obviously that's not a deal breaker for me, but I'd have preferred twice the life if not more.

Other Thoughts: Too bad this model was discontinued, driving the retail price so high.

5 out of 5 eggsWD is Tops.

Pros: Fast Load times. Reads faster than you would think by looking at numbers and benchmarks, which are always best case scenario anyway, and can deliver SSD near speed when loading games.
Ok. Write times.

Cons: I only put this in the con because it does write slower then the WD Blue 1TB. Almost by 50-60 MB/s with the same file sometimes. Maybe not the best drive for content creation.
And yes, they can get loud depending on the application.

Other Thoughts: Not sure how they do it but Win 7 managed to load up in less than 30 seconds.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed too early IMO

Pros: First, the drive didn't fail catastrophically, but rather started kicking off chkdsk errors in Windows then failed a DLGDIAG Quicktest. So I quickly decommissioned the drive before any data could be corrupted and will move the data once the RMA unit arrives. Secondly, I will give WD credit that the RMA process was easy for a drive I bought more than three years ago, never bothered to register, don't have a receipt, etc., and for that I raised my review from 2 to 3 eggs. Lastly, it does come with a 5 year warranty.

Cons: I am torn on the fact that a Caviar Black failed so soon. I have a sneaky feeling I would have gotten similar life out of the cheaper Blue drives, which I have never bought. But then again, the Blues only come with a two-year warranty. Plus I have a sneaky feeling the RMA unit will not come with a fresh new 5 year warranty. But bottomline, I buy the Black series to avoid this situation period. And it was not like I deployed it in a server or some other harsh environment, just my desktop PC.

Other Thoughts: I am also nervous about receiving an RMA replacement via the mail. I have stopped buying HDDs online. My experience with shipping is that HDDs just aren't built for it.
