4 out of 5 eggsSpacious but slow

Pros: Great value for money in terms of storage space. I have 4 operating systems on my laptop (since I write code for MacOS Lion and Snowleopard, Linux and Windows).... Couldn't have this many operating systems without a drive this large. I can carry my entire music and photo library on it despite having so many partitions.

Cons: Very slow - sometimes excruciatingly so. The speed hits during disk thrashing forced me to swap my DVD drive for an SSD (Corsair 240GB). This upgrade to an SSD has solved my need for speed while also allowing me to have the large amount of space provided by this mechanical drive.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a lot of space for cheap without high performance go for this drive. If you want performance and lots of space, consider using this drive alongside an SSD. I've done this with my Macbook Pro and am pleased with the performance boost from the SSD while having tons of space from this drive. To read about how I did this google for "Arvind Pereira Macbook Pro upgraded dual hard drive". The first link in the results points to my post which has info and links about how I performed the upgrade.

5 out of 5 eggsPERFECT if you know what to do with it

Pros: The 12.5mm height factor fits perfectly in a ODD slim caddy, my friend bought this and wouldn't fit his laptop so he gave to me instead of returning... I bought a ODD slim caddy for around 10 bux and removed my dvd drive to fit this to go along side of my SSD. These are like green drives for your desktop, store stuff!

Cons: Need the right caddy to fit your laptop, look for something like this, but make sure its 12.7mm thick (AND FITS YOUR LAPTOP)-- newegg didn't have the one I need but here's a sample:

3 out of 5 eggsProbably good, be wary of the thickness.

Pros: 1 TB !!!!! Sent it in for return and they were nice and courteous and I will get a drive that will fit.

Cons: does not actually fit in my laptop, unable to test any other features. most drives are .37 in., this drive is .49 in.!

Other Thoughts: Beware the thickness!

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for this inconvenience. The 1TB WD Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT model is 12.5 mm high and would not fit in your laptop. Western Digital has released the WD10JPVT, which is 9.5 mm high and has the proper dimensions to be connected inside your laptop.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, IF IT FITS

Pros: High capacity for 2.5" drives

Cons: Doesn't actually fit in the laptop. Newegg's claim is that it does mention on the details page that it is 12.5 mm and not the standard 9.5 mm. Really? Who would have thought you need to check the physical dimensions of a hard drive that hasn't had any variations in those dimensions, since it came out? Yeah, they got me with that one. It isn't worth paying $37.20 to ship them back to Newegg either. Now we know why the price was so low!

Other Thoughts: If it actually has to fit inside an enclosure or laptop, then make certain to find the other model number that is actually 9.5 mm thick, not this one.

It probably isn't fair to dock 2 eggs for Newegg not being more up-front about it not being the right size, but because it actually can not fit where it was bought to go, I wanted initially to put it at 1.. still do, but it is a great drive, as is the case with every other WD I've owned...

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy...... Big Mistake

Pros: None

Cons: Bought first one in June, it died less than a month later.
Got RMA and second one.
It just died, after only a few weeks.
Got RMA for third one, hope it actually works more than a few weeks, when I get it.
Hard to like it when it when it does not work very long.
Save your money and get another brand!!

Manufacturer Response:

It is unfortunate that you experienced multiple DOA drives, as our drives are all rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before leaving our warehouse. 3 out of 5 eggsBig drive but it died.

Pros: 1TB.

Cons: Died. Recovering 1 TB of data sucks.

Other Thoughts: Not the first WD drive I've had die. Makes me want to cry. Freezing the drive didn't help with recovery.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Mobile Blue, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
We recommend maintaining a backup of your data at all times, as a best practice, to ensure the availability of your information and minimal potential data loss. There are many variables that can result in a failed drive, such as power outages, accidental physical damage, and internal component failure from improper cooling. In any scenario, data recovery is not a fail safe, and we never recommend placing a drive in an extreme hot/cold environment, as this may further damage the device. For assistance with different backup solutions, please visit the information provided by the following links.

3 out of 5 eggsBlue hue

Pros: It works. Cool, low wattage drive. Form factor A. okay!

Cons: Only Sata II...I was being cheap. Slow when compared to SSD...shh!

Other Thoughts: This originally was in my Laptop but now it's in my Desktop because it was replace with SSD drive by OCZ on M.I.R...again I was cheap! It's current residency is so slow...SATA II! It is used for my lower class games and load times are fine, not seriously annoying but a little respectable. Desktop icons with the source from this drive is slow to refresh on boot up with Windows 7. My Samsung SSD OS drive is too fast for it.
In Laptop it was okay because of SATA II speed limit. I am just spoiled from SATA III and SSD performance. Only buy for cheap media drive or storage. If not go green drive.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: + Lots of space
+ Quiet
+ Cool

Cons: - Taller than most laptop drives
- Average transfer speed

Other Thoughts: Like many people here I missed the fact that the drive is 12.5mm tall. It was supposed to replace a 500GB drive I used to use for backups and file transfer in an external enclosure, but the WD10TPVT did not fit.

Rather than returning the drive I ordered a MASSCOOL UHB-2221 enclosure (Newegg Part # N82E16817388028) which can accomodate 12.5mm drives. It's USB-only, but cheap and constructed well.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Enough Drive

Pros: This drive performs quickly and is about on par in performance with other laptop drives I have had in the past, but honestly who buys a 1TB drive expecting stellar performance. Pair this with a solid state and you have yourself a pretty impressive storage solution. Massive size, both in data and the physical size of the drive (i guess not really a pro but they do go together)

Cons: This drive is big. Like really big. I had to take an aluminum plate out of my laptop case to allow it to fit. It is at least 50% higher than an average 2.5" drive. Now that the plate is out, i'm not sure what it's purpose is. Perhaps to sheild expresscard slot devices from any forces on the hard drive and vice versa. (on my inspiron 1520 the expresscard slot and primary hard drive bay are stacked very closely)

This drive is also noisy. Quite a bit louder than a segate 7200 rpm 16mb cache 500gb drive that i have, so essentially you trade speed for storage with this drive.

Other Thoughts: If this drive came with a ssd cache partition or some other feature I could forgive the huge size but honeslty, it's a bit ridiculous that there are not huge disclaimers about this.
