1 out of 5 eggsWD Drive failed a little over a year after purchase

Pros: When it worked, the hybrid section really seemed to improve performance, specifically in Logic Pro.

Cons: I'm sorry, but mechanical failure of a drive a year and 3 months after purchase is unacceptable. I was hesitant to buy another WD drive after they had burned me in the past, but the price and allure of a 32gb cache swayed me. NEVER AGAIN.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Drive

Pros: Seems to work okay.
Decent enough performance for 5400 rpm.
Hasn't generated any S.M.A.R.T. errors (so far).

Cons: Not as quiet as I was lead to believe. I can definitely hear it humming and hissing away inside my netbook, whereas I couldn't hear the original drive at all (160 gig seagate).

-1 egg for the noise level.

Other Thoughts: In order to download the alignment software that allows this drive work correctly under older OS's like XP, Western Digital forces people to create an account, give them all their personal info, and register the drive itself by entering the serial number. I believe this is an gross abuse of customers' privacy, and evidence of a greedy company going too far in their lust for marketing data. In contrast, Samsung and Hitachi both make their similar alignment tools freely available.

-1 egg for WD's exploitative behavior.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect replacement for PS3 (Launch Model, 60gb)

Pros: This hard drive was the perfect replacement for the original PS3 launch model that came with the 60gb seagate hard drive. This seems to run cooler and quieter than the original hard drive. It fit perfectly into the housing and the only problem I had during the install was that two of the cheap sony screws on the housing stripped. I still successfully installed it and it runs great.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is the perfect hard drive to get for the PS3.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good... but still not low power enough

Pros: Well... it's a hard drive. Pretty standard 2.5" fair. Performance is good... perhaps even great all things considered. No problems with the connectors. Currently got it installed in an external hd cradle. I'll be using it day to day for backing up client's computers and for running virus scans (I plan to make it bootable and install linux on it).

Cons: Really hard to say anything negative about this drive. It does everything the package says it does.

However, as a warning to others who might make the mistake I did:

It *is* a "low power" drive... but not low power enough to run off the power from a single USB2 connection. You will have to use a usb y-cable (which most cradles come with) and two usb slots to get it enough power on most systems. I should have checked WD's spec sheets before ordering. It's a convenience thing mostly so I'm probably going to keep the drive and just deal with it.

Still... it would be worth a 5th egg if it had this "feature."

Other Thoughts: Those of you buying drives for external cradles make sure you always double check the manufacturers spec sheet. USB2 spec only provides a maximum of 0.5 amps while this drive requires 0.95 amps during spin up (according to the spec sheet on the WD website). Even though it only uses 0.4 Amps during operation it fails to spin up correctly, resulting in the computer being unable to detect the drive.

Also, if you plan to use with a y-cable with these drives to supply enough power and intend to use a USB hub: make sure the hub is a powered hub. If your hub doesn't get power from a wall outlet than it can only provide a maximum of 0.5 amps total to all devices connected to it... or even one device connected via a y-cable.

And don't forget to add the power consumption of the cradle you plan to put it in.

Just to make things more confusing, some motherboards provide more power to the USB port than the spec suggests. Oh and USB3 allows for more power as well.

in short: do the res

5 out of 5 eggsGood storage drive

Pros: Nice, quiet, cool, low power consumption, low profile form factor, (hopefully) long lasting with 24/7 operation, good sized buffer

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Using this in a SFF PC with little ventilation, hope all will be well for the next few years....

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid Storage

Pros: Quick response when loading media. 32MB cache works very well to spped up this process.

Cons: Response could be faster if 7200 rpm but I knew going in it was 5400 rpm so no egg lost.

Other Thoughts: Great shipping as usual with Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect specs for PS3 (Playstation 3)

Pros: Low power consumption, low heat and low noise (since this is an AV drive) make it perfect for PS3 use.

32MB cache will be great, in theory. It's certainly better than most of the other drives at this price point.

Fits perfectly into a PS3, and is formatted and used quickly. This drive seems to be noticeably faster than the stock 60GB drive in my launch day PS3.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks for PS3

Pros: Installed this drive as a replacement to my original 60gb Playstation 3 drive. Using the PS3 backup/restore utility replacement was a snap and went perfectly.

Initial testing shows this drive runs wells in the system, fast loads, no problems so far with any games. Heat and noise levels are on par with the Seagate it replaced. 32MB of cache can't hurt!

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: FYI when the PS3 formats the drive you will end up with ~465 MB after formatting. This results in ~413 MB of usable storage space after the system files, etc are installed. If you were expecting a full 500MB of space you should look at a larger drive.
