4 out of 5 eggsOne of Five Failing

Pros: Low noise, low heat, good data transfer rate

Cons: Early failure rates, lost data

Other Thoughts: Purchased 4 of these hard drives in late 2010. After only 3 years and 101 days in a home server, two of these drives are now reporting multiple sector errors. WD diagnostic program confirms the sector errors. Contacted the WD website to discover there is no 5-year warranty concerning these drives.

2 out of 5 eggsI'm disappointed in Western Digital

Pros: Works great while it's working, comes with a 5 year warranty.
I used it exclusively as a back up so I'm not losing any vital data.

Cons: Failed in less than a year, currently has at least 8 bad sectors.

Other Thoughts: I see this one is discontinued now. I've never gotten a bad product from WD before, so I hope their warranty process is easy to go through and that they're honest.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hard drives

Pros: Lots of storage. I use 4 of these in a security video server. They have been running for over 2 years now with no problems. 24 hours a day. I would highly recommend these drives for any storage need.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I am going to get more of these as I am building another video server for my sisters store. All from Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Largest-capacity HDD I Own

Pros: This is by far the largest-capacity hard drive I own. 2TB means I can backup my server's entire data partition and still have room to store a few other things.

Cons: Because of all the platters, it takes a little longer to spin up.

Other Thoughts: I use this drive for server backup each month. Also, register this drive with WD for a potential RMA that might come along.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive, poor shipping

Pros: High-MTBF and better burn-in for more confidence about reliability. Five-year warranty.

Cons: Shipping quality is poor from NewEgg NJ. Drive arrived within a ESD-safe bag, wrapped in a half-inch of bubble wrap, in the white OEM box, at the exact bottom of a NewEgg cardboard box and then covered by paper filler. Whereas a suspension system isn't necessary, putting the drive in the center would absorb a lot more of the impact. Perhaps they intend to pass any damaged drives onto Western Digital - surprised WD hasn't complained or changed their process, their cost of replacing the drive from a latent failure must be accounted for in the sales price.

WD's free Data LifeGuard Diagnostic showed no initial damage after two days' worth of several runs.

Other Thoughts: Bytes Per Physical Sector: 512 (non-AF) - no alignment needed for any older O/S. HDTune 70-145MBps transfer rate, 9.6ms avg access rate [2-17ms]

2 out of 5 eggs4 out of 24 dead within 3 months

Pros: I have allways belived in the re series drives. their enterprise class and have high reliability or have had in the past

Cons: i have had 4 out of 24 dead witin 3 months...
they drives were in a raid 60 with 38tb of space and 3 of the drives failed as soon as it was turned off on one side of the raid 6 thus all data lost.... We had to send the drive in for recovery in order to get anything off the drives, according to the drive recovery place all three drives failed because the heads did not park when power was turned off... mind u this was a normal shutdown from windows in this case was not a loss of power or eletical or anything else. Just a normal shutdown. The "warrinte" from wd is just the drive not the contents. I am vary disappointed in the way these enterprise class drives are turning out after three months a 16% failure rate.... We will be sending the drives back to wd for a replacement.... once we receive them back from the data recovery place.

5 out of 5 eggsIt is hard to beat this hard drive, period.

Pros: Reliable, though it is not a hard drive purchased for performance.

Cons: Price, performance is not the best but it is a drive to be used for stability especially in servers. I have purchased at least six and only one had to be RMA later. Not bad for server level demands.

Other Thoughts: Made the purchase you can count on this drive.
