5 out of 5 eggsShort Review

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: 12 inch USB cable.

Other Thoughts: This drive, like sunscreen, is for external use only.
I purchased this guy hoping to make it my new C drive (newer, faster, bigger, etc) swapping my old C drive out to the external case, sitting on the shelf, rarely seeing activity, quietly holding my important files in case the new hotness had a breakdown. Upon opening the case, turns out the I/O board is integrated with the USB plug and that's that. No swapping possible. Just writing this review because I would have purchased a different drive had I known this ahead of time. Otherwise it is a fine product.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!!

Pros: Small, compact, and no power cords!

Cons: Very short cable, but I guess it's more for a laptop and not my tall 22 inch full tower case.

No option for a power adapter.

Other Thoughts: This works awesome, but it pulls power from the USB port, which has very little. If you have issues, make sure you unplug all unnecessary USB devices. A powered USB hub is nice as well. Hopefully they make a eSATA or USB3 version soon to get maximum speed. USB is so slow.

2 out of 5 eggsDrive was probably not DOA; now, the CABLE, OTOH....

Pros: A WD Elements drive. A good price. Few things in life are nicer or more reliable.

Cons: The x*$&&!! USB cable supplied in the box.

I've never had a single problem with any WD external USB drive, including Passports, Elements, and even a couple of old bulky MyBooks. So when both drives in my order appeared to be DOA today, I figured something was amiss, and it was: the cables supplied in each box. It wasn't just that _one_ of the two included/sealed cables was flaky/unable to communicate to/power the 250GB drive - NEITHER cable worked on either drive. I pulled a spare cable out of my desk drawer and had zero problem with either drive. Worked like a Dream (that's usually what "WD" stands for).

FWIW, the Western Digital cable part number seems to be "2064-701050-006 AJ".

I think someone's gonna be eating a lot of these because someone at WD decided to skimp on cable quality, and the result: it looks, smells, and quacks like a DOA. Penny wise, pound foolish. Any users who are in the habit of just tossing the cables along with the excess packaging - they'll be just f

Other Thoughts: I know it seems petty to ding a fine WD product 3 eggs because the cable was bad, but I was thiiiis close to a return, and it's just contemptuous of customers.

4 out of 5 eggsWORKS WITH SA 8300HD.. INSTRUCTIONS!

Pros: Okay, I was going nuts reading everyones reviews, some saying this external HDD works with the Scientific Atlantic 8300HD and others says it doesnt.... well IT WORKS! I was frustrated because I followed instructions that said: 1. Turn off DVR 2. plug in My Dvr Expander (via sata) 3. turn on DVR.....

Well truth is, that doesnt work, this is what worked for me:

1. Plug in power to My DVR expander
2. Plug in eSata from the HDD into the back of the 8300HD (while the cable box is STILL ON)
3. it will prompt you to Format, just hit the Yellow Triangle on the remote, and bamm my space went from 50% to 7%

so this expander worked when I plugged it in WITH the cable box (8300HD) ON...

Cons: I have heard that some people claim their shows recorded with the expander were pix-elated.. I cannot confirm this but I will shortly

Other Thoughts: this is more of a guide / hope to those who purchased for the 8300HD and can not get it to work.

so in a nutshell, PLUG IN EXTERNAL HDD to CABLE BOX WHILE CABLE BOX IS ONNNNN!

2 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: First DOA I've ever received from Newegg. Newegg customer service issued RMA quickly and without hassle.

Cons: Long wait for customer service.

Other Thoughts: Awaiting replacement process to complete, will review device if replacement does not arrive DOA; if product arrives DOA again, will request refund for alternative device.
