1 out of 5 eggsYou'll love it until it fails

Pros: Storage Space

Cons: The PCB boards on some of WD drives encrypt the
data as it is written to the disk. (MyBook 2+3TB Known)
When the board fails, you have locked down data that
you will eventually give up trying to find another maching
PCB board.

Other Thoughts: I lost the data on a both 2TB and 3TB drives which stopped connection to the usb due to the PCB boards failing.
WDs warranty covers replacement but you will be paying
for return shipping and you still loose your data.
To me thats like no warranty at all.
I won't buy a WD anything after getting that badly cheated.
You'll love them until it fails, so have another enclosure
ready before you get it and start filling it with your valuable data.
Move the drive to another enclosure right away.
I guess this move was to get people to buy another one when it failed, thats a backfire strategy if I ever heard one.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless for Network Storage

Pros: hard drive works.............sort of.

Cons: Doesn't work well on a network even a small home network. Very poor software.

Other Thoughts: I tried to make it work for about six months and then took it apart to put the green, slow hard drive in my computer which is what I should have done in the first place with another black drive. I think WD is the best hard drive manufacturer out there but this idea that green save power is ridiculous right up there with water savers. If it takes longer then you save nothing. The green hard drive works much better directly in the computer not good but better then the MyBook. Software usually didn't complete the backup. If I didn't have any spare room or power for extra drives then I would look for storage ideas better then a Mybook.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the My Book Live 1TB, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
The My Book Live has a 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connection, which breaks down to a transfer speed ceiling of 125 MBps in optimal situations. Actual transfer rates can vary based on your local area network topology, hard drive disk read/write speeds, system activity, and length of cable, as well as wireless connectivity to the router. To achieve maximum transfer rates, we recommend using Giga-bit network devices, because your transfer rates will only be as fast as your slowest network component.

1 out of 5 eggsMillions of reason why not to buy

Pros: it can be access from any computer that's part of the same network

Cons: Application won't let you save anything... keep throwing an error message, even on first install... if you like a networked drive then you can probably get this, but if you want a networked secured drive, do not buy this..

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the My Book Live 1TB, as this is not the typical experience with the product. We always recommend ensuring that your drive is up to date with the latest firmware, as this may easily resolve the problem(s) you are experiencing. Please follow instructions on how to update your drive provided at the following link. http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5735
As a troubleshooting step, we recommend considering resetting the device with a paper clip on the back of the unit with the reset button, which is non-data destructive, and as a last step, consider performing a factory reset to defaults, which is completely data-destructive, and brings the drive back to factory defaults by re-installing the OS.
If you are experiencing concerns with the provided software, disable any/all antivirus software and/or firewalls as a troubleshooting step. You may also work within your OS environment to map and access the drive. Visit the following link(s) for further information.
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2676
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2686
Also ensure you have the drive connected directly to your router and the computer as well, to rule out any other network devices causing the concern.
We would appreciate the opportunity to further assist you, and resolve any further concerns you may have with the device and/or your experience. 2 out of 5 eggs1 down. 1 to go?

Pros: It hooks to a network.
It has a 3 year warranty.
Built with linux based OS, that gives it 1 egg by itself.
Nice logs (ty to linux).
Simple UI.

Cons: Heat. According to SMART log data the failed drive was HOT.
POOR response times from WD support.
Failed barely after 1 year.

Other Thoughts: Looking the log data over (I liked the log details, thank linux for that) it produced a lot of heat, it also had issues with sectors. All in all I feel the architecture in the controller was quite nice, but I was reminded why I had stayed AWAY from WD HDD's for the past 8 year.

They did NOT think about heat when designing this. I believe that I was likely given a HDD that was past it's shelf life, or a green drive. Either way this doesn't change the factor that I have had a lot of issues with WD HDD's, including the "enterprise" grade equipment. What happed WD???? You used to make great equipment back in the day?!

4 out of 5 eggsWD My Book Live 1TB

Pros: Now you can access your files from anywhere and keep your files at your own home! You no longer have to pay a "cloud" storage or access fee once you get your My Book Live setup. This is a well built unit, very fast and quiet, as there is no fan required or installed making it great in your office. You can store and access your music, video, photos and store program files and data that you can access from your home network, or through the internet if your on the road. You can use your Windows or Mac desktop, laptop, iPad, iPhone, Android or Blackberry. It is wonderfully easy to use and setup. The included setup software is included, and no need to download it. Once the software is installed you have complete access to the drive and can upload files at will. You have a public folder to store your music, pictures, videos and software in their seperate directories. A smartware directory and a Mac TimeMachine backup directory are also available.
Initially when setting up your My Book Live you are presented with 4 choices; Open My Book Live, Backup files, setup My Book Live and Setup your personal cloud. Each selection will allow you to either customize, load or make changes to the default settings.
The 1TB model has 992MB of free storage space accoring to Windows.
To get complete access on the go you also need to download from your appropriate app store, the WD 2Go app. The apps are somewhat limited in their abilities, but for normal access they work well and quite responsive. Viewing 4 megabyte photos on a Samsung Android phone from the My Book Live was impressive. Just be aware your internet speed really determines how well your files download.

Cons: Although the unit has great software included, getting the unit setup to access it over the internet takes some time. If anything should have been included in the box it would be a printed quick reference guide to step the user through the appropriate steps. The way it is now you will need to open the electronic manuals included on the drive and try to decipher your way through. Some users may get flustered with process and give up. But in the end it is worth the effort.

Other Thoughts: The WD My Book Live is a great unit that lets you access your files from anywhere. If your at grandma's house for the holidays it's easy to share the photos of the kids with her. If you left an important file or report at home while on a business trip, no problem getting it anymore. No need to carry hundreds of megabyte of data when you travel when you have this setup in your home. This unit comes close to having your own home server, but at a fraction of the cost, size and power consumption. The price is competitive with the abilities this unit provides.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor design

Pros: I liked that I could map the drive. DLNA compatible, and remote access was a nice option.

Cons: Never got close to the advertised speeds. probably due to using a low rpm drive. Periodically lost its network connection and needed a reboot. The wake on LAN was buggy, basically a coin toss. And, with no switch, I had to unplug and plug in to power cycle it on.

Can't partition the drive, its own mini OS does this it self in a way where it locates the "user" and if the previous partition gets full, that's it.

You could not run windows back ups to it. You had to use the built in utility. Didn't do me any good, on my home network, this was going to store all the data as a personal cloud. I installed small SSD's in all of my computers to make them fast, so storage was going to be in the cloud. The only thing I wanted to back up to the drive from the computers was a system image, but it would only do files, and not even all of them.
Lasted about a year.

Other Thoughts: Now about the design. After a year, the operation was really getting buggy. More often not waking up, losing its connection and such, I decided I would just put it in my main tower and use it until I built a server. I unplugged, started to disassemble the enclosure, got distracted by the kids, then went back to it. 30 minutes after disconnecting the power, I removed the drive from the enclosure and it was still uncomfortably hot! And I knew I just tossed my warranty out the window. The enclosure has no fan, small vents, and a stainless plate covering the business side of the hard drive. There was no way to cool this drive off while it was in use. When I did install the drive in my tower, windows popped off "SMART failure imminent" warnings. I just copied to another external drive to store things for a few months until I built my home server. Which of course has at least one fan in it, but that is all that is needed.

Until they put a fan in this thing it will just be destined to die after a fairly short life. But I feel it is the enclosure design, not the drive. Almost all the drives I own are WD, and they work flawlessly. Which is why I picked it to begin with.

2 out of 5 eggsRather have my money back

Pros: Works as an external drive.

Cons: -No interface to directly transfer data without network
-Tablet software (the reason I bought it) doesn't work and I have an ASUS transformer price (so not something really old)
-Very slow transfer rate over network

Other Thoughts: Basically, don't buy this if you need to use it for tablets. There is no point.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Western Digital 1 TB My Book Live, as this is not the typical experience with the product. This drive is manufactured as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, and as such was not intended to transfer data via direct connection through a USB port. If you do prefer a direct connection however, you can directly your PC or Mac to the My Book Live via Ethernet cable, as the My Book Live has an operating system that will allow for direct connect Ethernet data transfer. Once a direct connection is established, you will no longer be able to utilize the network or cloud data transfer features, as the unit is not receiving an internet connection.
The software that works with the drive is supported on Android and iOS devices for remote access. Certain units need to be updated to the software version required to run the viewer app. We recommend testing the drive performance while connected directly to the computer. If you are wirelessly connected to your network, in the interest of troubleshooting we recommend hard-wiring your computer to your router to see if your transfer rates increase, as a wireless connection can possibly bottleneck your LAN throughput.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I got it free with a purchase of lap top.

Cons: the software, it's annoying to use.

Other Thoughts: I used it maybe 2 times in last year. I just prefer normal externals drives.
