1 out of 5 eggsOne of the 2 worst products I have ever owned.

Pros: None, you shouldn't ever ever ever buy a WD product.

Cons: Where can I start. This this doesn't work whatsoever and they never update the firmware with any relevant fixes. Itunes media server has NEVER worked on it. When I first bought it, we renamed the device and once renamed, you couldn't connect to it anymore, it would not accept any username or password. Now after almost 2 years with this oiece, it won't let you login to the protected file shares until you reboot it.

Other Thoughts: STAY AWAY even from used ones.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Brad, we apologize for the continued inconvenience you have experienced with your device. In the interest of troubleshooting, please try pressing the reset button on the back of your WD My Book Live Personal Cloud Storage device for 10 seconds. This will restore basic access permissions in the configuration page back to factory defaults, along with the device name, while keeping all data intact.

We would appreciate the opportunity to assist you on any problems you may have, resulting in a positive resolution to your issue. Please contact us at (855) 842-5370, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en&ct=networking and notify of your Newegg review.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Cloud

Pros: Price, ease of setup, stability. Seriously, if you want extra storage for the household, this is the way to go.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Hooked this up to my PS3, cell phone and laptops thru a wireless router and use it as a cloud storage device for Family Photos, the kids movies and a digital copy of my dvd and blu ray collection, it sits tucked away in the office and thus far has worked like a dream.

3 out of 5 eggsSo So SOHO NAS

Pros: -At $130 its not a bad deal, I would never pay the full retails at $200
-Quite, low power usage
-Very easy to use user interface, a bit on a slow on the response though
-Cloud software to access your files anywhere
-Multiple video streams without issue
-Built in FTP server

Cons: -Slow large (250MB) file writes, 15-20 MBps Write and 40-60 MBps Reads (-egg) even the slowest green drives today have a write rate at 90 MBps, small file writes (3MB) did a bit better at 30 MBps
-Unit could come with a fan to keep it cool and prolong the life of the drive
-No Plug ins
-Cloud software is annoying to use, bugs you about space left on the drive
-No usb port, this unit could easily have a USB port or two to expand the units storage or setup a network printer

Other Thoughts: Ok, I know I was not expecting the best from this unit. Being a single drive unit without any raid capabilities. Keeping with the rather pleasant My Book shape, this unit has no fan and relies on passive cooling to get the job done. Digging deeper I see that this unit has a APM82181 chip at its core which does support USB, and PCIe to boot, to bad WD crippled it. I guess that the user interface is a stripped down version of linux is easily to use but limited in options, I also notice a slight lag when going about the user interface. Also limited is the RAM at 256MB, this chip supports 512MB and going from 256MB to 512MB would cost less than $1 and provide a great increase in file writing and possible the user interface lag.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised and more

Pros: Able to access Movie's, Music, Photo's, Documents as long as you have a wifi connection or if you feel like using your data.

When using your own data plan to access your files in MyBookLive it will warn you before playing or viewing the item you're to access, on how much data will be used to open the file you're trying to access.

I have been able to play 5 different device's all at the same time with different movie's to the following products: iPad Mini, iPad (3rd gen), Macbook Air (2011) running mavericks, Mac Mini 2011 Running Mountain Lion as the os and my iPhone 5. All of these device's ran extremely smooth Not one of them was lagging. I had each device on 3 different floors using the same wifi in my home.

Also I have confirmed that you're able to play the same movie on seperate device's. My test consisted of 3 device's, Macbook Air (2011 running mavericks), iPhone 5, and Mac Mini 2011 (running mountain lion as the os). All ran fine however, it did happen to lag a little bit. It could be because I was all the way down in my basement when trying to run this movie. Majority of the time however, ran like a champ.

This device is capable of playing almost anywhere on any device, it just needs the device to be able to discover it, and use its interface to play the movie or view photos or play your music.

I absolutely love that you're not able to access any file unless you're a registered user that you set up online (very simplistic) and it is password protected. You start as the admin and go from there for making new users.
The privileges are set by admin and can allow them to edit the share folder they can see or just allow them to only view things if you're nervous they will delete or alter files in that share.

The Share files are handy, you create share files for specific people and still able to alter who is allowed to which one share file for whatever reason.

This device is compatible with Windows 7 Windows 8 and I believe Mac OS 10.6 or newer. I will confirm this and edit the operating system if I am mistaken.. Also, you can do back ups to this device with both windows or mac. Time machine will work fine on this device.

I use a ac router but, not a single device in my home is ac compitable so it runs great using N as the wifi. The router is ASUS Router the newest one from best buy for $199.99

iTunes music format's can be put directly onto the WD MyBookLive and play with no problem at all.

I would recommend this to anyone of my friends who are tech savy or not it is that simple.

Cons: None that I have come across after owning this for 2 weeks

Other Thoughts: Ensure you have a good wifi connection, that will be the maiun reason why your device is running the file you're open a bit choppy.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow, SLOW

Pros: Easy to setup

Cons: Extremely SLOW, the specs don't tell you the speed of the HD I suspect sata II.

Other Thoughts: Only good for back up. The MFG needs to give the specs !!Gigabyte network connection maybe but slow drive, what good is the fast connection?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear DaveG, your device has a 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connection, which breaks down to a transfer speed ceiling of 125 MB/s in optimal situations. Actual transfer rates can vary based on your local area network topology, local PC hard drive disk read/write speeds, system activity, overhead, and length of cable. Please click on the following link for some suggestions that could help you improve your transfer rate.

1 out of 5 eggsThis one is fail product

Pros: Easy setup

Cons: I rarely write a review but this product really disappointing me of. Its almost lost my trust on WD product.
This thing works ok just for the first 5 month, then it start failing to meet the demand. I even not reach half of the space, the performance was going down rapidly. I could not even open a low resolution movie from it. STAY AWAY from this 2TB version, it is simply a fail product. I do full reset and firmware update but it didn't help.
My friend got 3TB and it went OK. there you go. I hope this information useful.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Zeff, we truly apologize for the inconvenience this incident might have caused you. There are many different ways to isolate a performance issue when using a network drive. We always recommend using Gigabit network components for the best possible performance, by hard-wiring to the router directly, specifically as a performance-based troubleshooting step, to see if the issue improves. There are some other suggestions on how to improve your transfer speeds at the link below:

4 out of 5 eggsI have reservations about these drives

Pros: I already had the 3TB live for home use which I use for music and photo storage. Every once in ahwile it seems that I get the 'check address, can't connect' message, both at home and with this 2TB drive at my shop, which was purchased for backup purposes.

Cons: I wish the software would do a complete hard drive copy, sort of like windows home server.

Other Thoughts: meh

1 out of 5 eggsMy Book Live BAAAAAAD

Pros: It had very nice packaging, and promised great things

Cons: The things didn't work, was corrupt from the moment I installed it. Spent about five hours on the phone with support trying to retrieve documents. ***NOT COMPATIBLE WITH NEW ITUNES***

3 out of 5 eggsFirmware Is A Problem

Pros: Great home based package. Lots of storage for a reasonable price. Recognized by my Win 7 system right off the bat.

Cons: Firmware is a problem. Lots of reported problems (read the reviews) but WD responds VERY slowly for update fixes. New releases break older working features (e. g. allowing the MBL to sleep when not being accessed).

After the latest firmware update - my MBL went to sleep and NEVER woke up again. Presently awaiting a RMA replacement.

Other Thoughts: OK - you should never update a working system - but there was a new media server in this update - and it seems to have features that I can use (still to be seen when I get my replacement).

WD support seems good. RMA process had trouble with my credit card (required for Advanced RMA where they ship a replacement BEFORE you send the broken one back). But they fixed that also.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the My Book Live, as this is not the typical experience with the product.

2 out of 5 eggsDecent for the Price

Pros: For the money this will be decent for small homes just wanting to get a device that will do media streaming, and basic file storage tasks.

Cons: Safepoint operation is a large issue. Troubleshooted for a few weeks trying to figure out why it would hang. Found that if the Safepoint operation tries to copy a file that is in use, or that has changed before the operation had completed it would hang and fail.

Other Thoughts: Would not suggest for a Small or Medium Business, this NAS is best left in a home.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the My Book Live, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
We always recommend ensuring that your drive is up to date with the latest firmware, as this may easily resolve the problem(s) you are experiencing. Please follow instructions on how to update your drive provided on the following link.
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5735
As a recommendation, is always good to have all the files that you are working on closed before the Safepoint starts.
As a troubleshooting step, we recommend considering a factory reset to defaults, which will erase all content on the drive and restore the OS, as this may resolve the Safepoint issue you are currently experiencing.
For applications within Small or Medium Business environment, you may want to consider the WD Sentinel. You can read more here.
